We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of February and into March 2018. The house is perched high of a steep hillside, behind 2 security gates. Our Suzuki Vitara 4x4 made it up the road up to the house just fine, as long as it was in first gear.
3 of the bedrooms have incredible views of the ocean and the 4th looks down the valley to the east. The beds and couches are super comfortable. We had no trouble sleeping. I even passed out in the hammock on the patio one night. You can easily hear the waves crashing down below on the beach, which is just a couple minute drive down the hill. You can also hear the bars down the hill at night when a band is there, but they didnt go too late at night. Father Rooster's even had a really nice firework display on our last night there (a Saturday).
What sells you on this place is the patio and it will not let you down. I could have stayed out there my entire trip. The patio and infinity pool will just blow you away. When Max walked us through the house to the back patio my jaw hit the floor, even with seeing tons of pictures before we went. In the the mornings, the patio is loaded with birds stopping by for drinks constantly. If you stay out late on the patio you may catch some more nocturnal creatures passing by the pool too.
It is a short drive to most food places in Coco, but just be prepared for tons of foot and bicycle traffic on the road (literally on the road). You adjust to it after a day, but definitely a bit different than the US. Ticoffia for breaskfast. For lunch and diner - Le COQ, Chorotacos, & Jardin are my recommendations for food. We even grabbed pizza from La Caveja one night and ate with the lizards on the patio. They are all within a 10 minute drive of the house. You can always walk down to Father Rooster's too, but get a reservation there beforehand.
This place was perfect for my photography addiction. Always something to shot. The patio made a great spot to launch my drone from too.
Max was super easy to work with and easy to get a hold of, if needed. The only problem we had the entire trip was the WiFi was down for 30 minutes, which wasnt even an issue. We started planning our trip back to the Lighthouse the second we landed in the states again. I would definitely go back in a heartbeat.
Search YouTube for the Lighthouse to find my drone video I shot of the house and the view. Also have video of the fireworks from the back patio uploaded there too.
We rented the Ocotal Lighthouse as a change in our families Holiday traditions. Family members has stayed in Ocotal the previous year and noticed the Lighthouse on the hill and looked into renting. We had a wonderful experience, with great room to stretch out and also enjoy outside spaces. The beach was a quick drive but found swimming was limited due to the Golden Thread Jellyfish migration. Still beach was very pretty and clean. Father Roosters Restaurant was great and we did dine there many times. Cocoa Beach Village was close and an easy trip for groceries. Vision Catamaran afternoon cruise is a must as well as a trip to hike Playa del Rincon. Howeler monkeys in the trees and flocks of beautiful parrots and parakeets filled the air. Hosts Julia and Max were very considerate and easy to contact with questions or needs. WE WILL RETURN...!!
Loved the house
Amazing view, Max was a great host
The house well equipped felt like home
All 11 of us had a good time.
The house is really beautiful in the quiet bay of Playa Ocatal. The bedrooms were well appointed and the pool was first rate. Max was most comfortable communicating via email but he really helped meet the many needs of my family, including finding us a wonderful woman who, along with her daughter, helped tidy up each day and cook a terrific homemade meal. The club access that comes with the house is also quite nice. We were traveling with a 2 and 4 year old and they loved being able to bounce from pool to pool.
A few things to note if you are considering the trip. The kitchen is small and doesn't have every bell and whistle though we found it very adequate. The third bedroom in the main house is very tight but has a comfortable bed. May not be quite big enough for an adult couple and both bathrooms in the main house are off the other two bedrooms which means whoever stays in the third room needs to go through one of the two bedrooms to use a bathroom. Also, the driving all over is not bad but you must be comfortable with going up and down steep hills. The driveway into the house is very steep and turning around at the top is tight.
Overall we would HIGHLY recommend this house and will indeed visit again when we decide to go back. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and a seemingly progressive one as well. The lighthouse was the perfect place to call home while we were there.
First, the good:
The house itself is lovely. The views are fantastic, the pool a delight. Beds are comfortable, and the showers are wonderful. There is one bar/restaurant, as well as the beach within a reasonable walk (5-10 minutes, though very hilly), along with a pace where you can book water tours (snorkeling, fishing, etc.). We didn't lack for basics in the kitchen, and basic toiletries/linens were provided.
The owner was very responsive when we had questions, and we really enjoyed our stay.
The house, especially the kitchen, is actually quite small, with little common area (though the outdoor area is VERY usable). The fourth bedroom is quite small, and lacks air conditioning, so sleeping with the door closed in that room is not really feasible. The water went out at least twice while we were there, albeit for 20 minutes or less. Also, while towels were provided, there were not enough for every person to have two- one for the pool and one for the shower. And yes, they did know how many of us were coming.
These complains are minor, and are only relayed to provide complete information to would- be renters. Overall, the home was lovely, and I would absolutely consider staying there again if I came back to the Coco/Ocotal area. Tip: A car would be extremely helpful. There isn't much in Ocotal, and Coco would be a long walk.

Breathtaking views, excellent location and unusually good build quality for Costa Rica.
Please is brand new and well worth the money, we absolutely loved it.
The only regret is that we had to leave.
