“A good option for Chaweng Noi”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

For those of you not familiar with Chaweng Beach, it's crazy town. A combo of Miami and Bangkok -- including lots of muscle men (where do they come from?) and businesses to service the party crowd (some of these services are not legal in the States). Anyway, The Sarann is as the edge of Chaweng Noi and a bit away from all the craziness of the beach road; however, if you want that stuff, it's a short cab ride away (or walk down the beach). We arrived for New Year's eve but didn't take part in the hotel's strange New Year's party. We went to dinner up the hill (lots of great places to eat just up the street on the way to Lamai), and returned for an unofficial party on the beach. It was awesome! Our room was big and had a partial sea view. The views from the pool and restaurant were amazing. The resort is mostly on the side of the hill with the water directly below -- the beach is to the left (down a few stairs). If you want a 100-percent beach resort experience, this is not the place for you. However, it serves as a good base between the beach communities of Chewang and Lamai. The gym, which I used daily, was small, but well equipped. All and all, not a bad choice for not too much money.

We have just spent three nights at the Sarann in a sea front villa, the views from the sea front villas are spectacular, however the rooms and the resort itself are tired and in need of a revamp. The spa treatments were very good. Unfortunately, the hotel is positioned across the bay from the Ark bar (several kilometers away) and the head banging music from this venue could be clearly heard across the bay and in our room. The music began at 4pm and continued until 2am the first night and 3.15 am the second night, with a short lull around 7pm. It made sitting outside in the early evening unpleasant. It was impossible to sleep, on the second night at 3 am i requested that the staff contact the police - our internet search indicated there was a 2 am shut down on the music, however it continued past this curfew. The following day I spoke to a manager who, whilst understanding could offer little, they would not provide a refund for the third night a due to our booking conditions even though it was being requested because of a significant issue. When I burst into tears from sheer exhaustion and the thought of another night of no sleep, the manager arranged for us to sleep in another room a row back from ours - the music was considerably less intrusive and we did get some sleep. Whilst I was extremely grateful to the manager for arranging this, it was disappointing to have paid a premium rate for the pool villa and not be able to enjoy it. I would not recommend anyone go to Chaweng beach area if you want peace, quiet and relaxation.

The Sarann was as beautiful as the pictures on their website. I have been to many hotels where the property or the room looks very different from what they show on the website.

I had a Jacuzzi villa and my friends had a Sea Front Pool Villa. First, my Jacuzzi Villa was extremely spacious – a large living space, giant bathroom with a standalone round bathtub, and a separate Jacuzzi tub where you can look out to the beautiful private court yard that is part of the villa.

The Sea Front Pool Villa was even more stunning. The view is to die for. That is one of the few hotels (perhaps the only one) in Koh Samui where there is no beach in between the villa and the sea. (That’s why it is called Sea Front Villa, not Beach Front Villa) When you stand/swim in the infinity pool, and the sea is right in front of you, with no tourists or locals walking in front of your villa. If you love the beach, it is not far and is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The main swimming pool was of course an infinity pool that is drop dead gorgeous, with the view of the sea on the right, and the beach on the left.

Also, you don’t have to step away from the hotel to try local/regional Thai dishes, as the restaurant just started a new menu with these additional new dishes. Other hotels in Thailand serve the typical Thai dishes for tourists. Having these additional options right at the hotel restaurant is fantastic! If you want to venture out of the hotel, the main downtown area of Koh Samui was really close by with fun night-life and shopping areas.

Staff was extremely nice and helpful. They responded quickly when I called about the bath sink stopper. It was at the end working, but I just did not know how to open it.

Overall, my experience at Sarann was one of the best I have ever had. I have been to many resorts and this is definitely one of the best ones. Should definitely get the Jacuzzi Villa or Sea Front Pool Villa, it is totally worth it.

One is loathed to write a harsh review of an establishment, particularly in a place like Samui which is awash with hotels. The business is a tough one. Alas, the Sarann has been dealt a cruel hand in terms of location and staff attitude; only one can be remedied really.

Located in no man's land between Chaweng and Lamai and perched atop a rocky outcrop, with difficult beach access it does enjoy good views from reception, tiny pool and the front row of rooms. The pervading and thunderous roar of traffic undoes entirely any view related benefit and we struggled to see how anyone could sleep here.

Check-in was a screw up, the fault of the booking agent not the hotel. However it was left to us to sort, via skype, after an early start from Bangkok, whilst reception staff gossiped and booked massages for other guests. We were then taken to our room in the back of three rows. No view and no gardens to look over really. The room was clean, spacious and the bathroom had a huge tub. But the noise from the road was all pervading, as if trucks, mopeds and cars were driving straight through. Couldn't imagine sleeping there or relaxing in any way. We went back to reception and said we were off. Staff didn't seem too fussed and stated their cancellation policy. We were offered another room but the damage was done and our minds made up.

Eventually a manager appeared and a further, middle row room was offered. She was charming, understanding and helpful in marked contrast to other staff. Had all staff behaved as she did, our experience would have been radically different. We found somewhere else and left, so can't comment on breakfast or bed comfort. Based on our very short experience though, struggle to recommend and suggest you look elsewhere.

I have just returned from a stay at The Sarann and have greatly enjoyed my holidays.
We stayed in one of the pool villas, which have amazing views: it's like being ON the sea! During our stay the weather was a bit stormy and the experience of laying in bed looking at the waves breaking right there behind the pool, was trully unique. The beach is easily accessible from the restaurant, and personally I think that having the rooms a bit away from the beach allows for better views and is also a big boost to privacy since no one stands between you and the sea.
The room was extremely spacious, with fantastic high ceilings, and very well appointed with a large separate living room, and big verandah, huge bathroom and bedroom. The hotel is not brand new but still looks very good, I liked the 'streets' between the row of rooms, very green and pleasant. As of last weekend the restaurant has a new menu, focusing on more authentic local cuisine, which I think is a happy departure from the "watered-down" Thai menus you usually see in international hotel properties.
The staff was extremely graceful and efficient, and overall I had a great time!

Enjoy your stay!!

Room Tip: Invest in the Pool Villas, the view is worth it.

The Sarann is full of potential, but lacks in cleanliness, basic up keep, and an ability to resolve issues. We had more than one room at the Saraan, this was not by choice, but rather because of maintenance and basic cleanliness issues.

1st Room: Our first room was one of the jacuzzi suite rooms! the space is great and the in room amenities are acceptable, however that is where the good part ends. Several lights were not working, so I called the front desk and a maintenance man quickly responded. In the process of checking on the lights he was shocked (electrically) and unable to fix the situation. "Alarm bells" began ringing with me at this point and I began to further inspect the room. There was unusual paint stains throughout the room, what appeared to be blood stains on the bed linens, and a general sense of dirtiness. The road that runs behind the hotel is extremely loud as well. I spoke with the front desk staff again and they moved us from our original room of 307 to 311.

Room 2: I began with a general inspection of the room and found all the lighting in regular working order and the bed linens appeared clean. A few vital basics checked off and we began to settle in. I noticed large areas of the closet had not been dusted in what appeared to be months, the toilet room had some sort of grime around the toilet seat, and again large unusual paint stains. My girlfriend resigned to the fact that this was resort was less than ideal and proceeded to attempt a shower. After quite some time of finagling with the shower, neither one of us could get the shower head to work, the shower head and handheld apparatus appeared to be of the lowest quality possible. After a very unsatisfying cleansing ( I use the term cleansing as it was not actually a shower since the shower head did not work at all). I contacted the front desk again and they were very unresponsive to my issues.

It seems that the staff of the Sarann choose to ignore customer issues and brush aside complaints. They did nothing to rectify the issues or offer up other possible solutions or reconciliations. Overall, I would rate the Saraan as poor at best and would not recommend anyone to stay there.

Room Tip: Do not choose the jacuzzi villas or regular rooms as they are near the road and noisy.

First impressions, the Sarann appears to be a luxurious resort, with friendly staff and lovely ocean views. We stayed in the Jacuzzi Villa, and upon arrival were greeted with drinks and helpful staff. However, once we settled in, the room began to smell really bad, almost like sewerage. We figured out it was coming from the air con, and the fan also didn't work. So we asked the front desk to fix the problem, but all they did was send someone down to spray some air freshener and light an oil burner. This obviously did nothing, so we requested another room which was provided immediately. Aside from this slight set back, there were no further issues. Breakfast was adequate, however lacked variety and became repetitive. The restaurant was pricey, and drinks were expensive. The housekeeping service was great and thoroughly cleaned the room and replenished it everyday and the tour service desk was outstanding and catered to all our tourist needs. The Sarann is about a 10min drive from the main strip in Chaweng, which meant a 300baht taxi ride each time you wanted to head in, so we highly recommend hiring a scooter at 250baht for 24hrs. It's a lovely resort however does lack something special.
