Is this the worst hotel in Thailand? It might just be.

Tripadvisor and its reviews have never let me down in ten years of travel, so when it came to booking my honeymoon I checked avidly as usual, and was delighted to find a hotel with decent reviews and an affordable price. Against my better judgement I ignored the 2 star rating and went with the plaudits below. What a mistake it was.

We arrived at the Chalala early evening and proceeded to our room. This is basic with a capital B - but thinking we would spend little time in the room we set our stuff down and proceeded to the "restaurant" for some much needed food after a long days travelling. Service was slow as the staff seemed more interested in larking about, but we patiently waited for our food. My wife choose Pad gra pow (with free e coli) whilst I went for Larb Gai (with free salmonella). It tasted bad and the effects on our system would be even worse. We paid the bill and headed back to the what would become known as the room of death with increasingly sore stomachs.

By this stage both of us needed the toilet rather urgently as the Chalala cuisine rushed to leave our system a much quicker than it entered it. However after just one use of the loo it overflowed with raw sewage across the room, lovely. Simultaneously I discovered the air con didn't work, tv didn't work, there was no hot water and there was an ant/mosquito infestation. At this point we got the "management" involved and bad was quickly to turn to worse. She informed us "number 1s you go shower, and number 2 you go beach toilet" - not really what we wanted to hear as our bodies fought off the horror her chef had inflicted on us. She refused to fix anything until the next day.

What followed was the worst night of my life. With the shower room covered in faeces we made regular trips to the beach to defecate and then back to the insect ridden, un-air conditioned room to lie down before repeating. By the time morning came round a transfer to prison seemed preferable. We spent all morning trying to get something done but the management wasn't there and the girl on reception could do nothing. Alas after just 1 night in this prison we packed up and headed to a different hotel.

On returning to the hotel to get my remaining days refunded Chalala hit a new low. Rather than apologise I was sworn at and challenged to a fist fight by the now irate boss - he felt it was rude of me to have left. "you want 5* you buy, this 2*. Im still waiting on my refund.

You've been warned - the only things that worse than the rooms and food is the aggression of the staff.

We stayed here one night and it was fine. Friendly service. Room was clean and spacious; shower was hot. Pool is nice and the restaurant facing the ocean was inexpensive with pretty good food. For the price of the room, it suited our needs, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay more than one night. Everything in Chaweng was so touristy. We stayed one night on our way from Koh Tao to Bangkok and after staying on a beautiful, peaceful part of Koh Tao, we didn't like overrun Koh Samui. You walk out onto the beach or just sitting at the restaurant and people are coming by selling stuff to you. Looking in either direction down the beach are dozens of restaurants exactly like the one you're standing in front of and dozens of places to get a massage or have a 'happy hour cocktail'. Walking up and down the beach, restaurants are trying to get you to sit at their table. View is okay but water was pretty gross - lots of trash.

Small well run hotel between the big resorts, rooms are unique, we had a family room (huge) and a superior double which had a raised platform with the mattress on the floor (no problem), lounge area and small bathroom which was not great but did the job! Excellent massage on the beach with the waves lapping the shore while you relax. This part of the beach has good small local restaurants all along the beach with lights in the trees - all looks magical at night. Quiet part of Chaweng beach with lots of character and an easy stroll along the beach to the main part of Chaweng with bars and restaurants or a stroll along the road to the markets, pubs and chaos in the back streets of Chaweng...for what you pay it is good value for money

Room Tip: superior double are nearer the beach, the cheaper rooms are at the back nearer the road...

Stayed here for 4 nights in December 2012 with my partner and 2 friends. The room was tiny and I didn't like the mattress on the floor situation. Shower was rubbish, cold and flooded. Safe didn't work. However the restaurant and its staff were amazing. Great food and service. The pool was clean, big enough and lush. Jazz at reception and her firend (didn't get her name) were fantastic with their service, remembers your names and Jazz helped us with many enquiries and bookings. Location is perfect, close enough to the busy Chaweng strip and far away enough from the noise.

We stayed here for one week in December, location is great, in the North Chaweng, only 10-15 mins walk away from the more livelier area.

Check in was fast and easy, with an option of paying before or after your stay. Our room, a bungalow, was tastefully decorated and clean, the shower took a while to figure out and the pressure from it was average.

The restaurant and bar located on the beachfront served nice food, breakfast was above average for Thailand. The pool looked nice, but we never used it.

Staff were friendly and helpful and the room was cleaned daily.

There was a small secure parking area at the entrance of the resort, very handy if you rent a car, as we did.

Overall, I couldn't fault it, and would not hesitate to recommend it or stay here again.

Room Tip: Recommend for families, nice and quite here, but not far from the busy areas.
