My family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children aged 10 and 12) stayed at Amari Palm Reef in early December 2011. It was probably not quite the peak tourist season yet, so the hotel was not overly crowded. And this review is based on the fact that the hotel is not running at full capacity.
We originally booked the Superior room, but we paid an extra THB2000 per night to upgrade ourselves to a Family Duplex with free breakfast for 4. They did not offer us free upgrades, sad :( See pictures of how the duplex room looks like in the Amari website.
The Amari resort is split into 2 compounds, separated by a main road. Rooms are found in both compounds. The reception, the breakfast restaurant and bar are located nearer to the beach. Our family duplex is located on the other side of the road, nearer to Prego restaurant, the spa and the gym. Even though the resort is separated by a busy road, the distance between rooms near the spa (furthest away from beach) to the Chaweng beach itself is only a mere short walk (probably less than 300m), and security guards are always at the road to help you stop traffic to let you cross.
The Family Duplex room sleeps 4 comfortably, with a king-size bed on the lower floor, and 2 single beds squeezed on the upper floor (like a loft). The rooms are clean and well maintained, and comes with standard amenities. The toilet is however separated from the shower area. I find the shower area rather small, and it does not come with a bath-tub. I think the single-floor deluxe rooms or suites do have a bath tub.
The rooms in the whole resort are located either on ground level, or 1 level higher. There are no lifts, you have to take the stairs. If you have difficulties climbing stairs, do request for rooms on ground level.
Both compounds have swimming pools, children's pool and jacuzzi. Amari even provide beach balls, toys, and floats for use in the pool. I don't have any problems with using the pools nor the lounge chairs, probably because there were not too many hotel guests.
The gym has 2 treadmills, 1 cross-trainer, and a multi-gym machine. The gym is closed for 2 hours from 1pm to 3pm daily for maintenance.
We did not try their spa services nor the Prego restaurant, although Prego is usually packed with diners every night. We did order lunch (local Thai food, fried rice and noodles) at their Bar@C (near the pool). Prices are reasonable, and we found the food delicious.
Merante is where you enjoy their buffet breakfast. They have the usual offerings for breakfast, an egg station where you can order your eggs cooked in whatever way you fancy (omelette, poached, or sunny-side), toast breads, cereals, pancakes, bacon, sausages, cheese, salads etc. Apart from serving fruit juices (orange, apple, guava), they even have fruit smoothies!
The Bar@C has happy hours (either 1 for 1, or at 30% discount) at selected hours of the day. I think is from 3pm to 6pm. Do check their noticeboard for details.
Each night, they offer various themed dinners along the beachfront. Again check their noticeboards for prices and details.
Other things you may wish to know about Amari, and around Amari:
1. The toilets in Amari smell really nice as they placed burners with aromatic oils in the toilets. The hand towels in the toilets are folded nicely like a flower. What a nice gesture!
2. Wifi is not free in the rooms, but is free near the reception and pool area.
3. If you don't intend to dine in Amari, there are other restaurants located near the hotel. I found a perfect Italian restaurant named Le Scalette that serves authentic Italian food just along Chaweng Beach Road very near to Amari (about 5 mins walk further down Prego).
4. A taxi ride from Amari to Tesco Supermarket costs THB300. Do try the MK Steamboat at Tesco ! We simply love the roast duck there.
5. DVD player is provided in the rooms. There are stalls along Chaweng Beach road that sells pirated DVDs for THB800 for 10 DVDs.
6. If you are not swimming, you can play table tennis or beach volleyball. They have a cement table tennis table. You can request for ping-pong bats and balls from the reception.
7. Taxi to the airport is only about a 10-minute ride. Check with the hotel for airport transfers, may or may not be complimentary.
8. Amari is not in central Chaweng, but is still in a good location. If you compare Amari with resorts like Anantara Lawana, the latter is in a more secluded part of the Chaweng beach with lesser crowd and hardly any beachfront activities.
9. The Amari website has a video showing the resort and its facilities. You can get a pretty good idea of how the resort , the rooms and their restaurants look like.
10. We were pleasantly surprised when we came back to our rooms one afternoon and found a birthday cake placed on our table. It was our son's birthday that day. We had never mentioned it to the reception, nor did we informed the hotel in advance, so I was most impressed that Amari staff must have noted it when they processed our check-in.
Amari resort have made my family trip to Koh Samui thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable. We would highly recommend this resort to any family looking for a place to stay in Koh Samui !

Room Tip: Superior rooms are rather small. Choose deluxe if you can afford. Rooms are either on ground level o...

Our family stayed in 3 separate rooms. We originally only had 2 deluxe and 1 superior room and they upgraded the superior room for free. The room was lovely and modern with slightly limited wardrobe/storage space but the beds were really comortable and the bathroom clean and modern. Check in was pleasant- albeit slightly confusing because we needed 3 rooms relatively close together, but we got there in the end. We were situated at the far end of the resort which was beautifully landscaped. Our room was on the 3rd floor which had no elevator and therefore slightly irritating. We were on the left side of the building which meant the door to the room faced out to the main strip and could hear the thumping music of one of the bars. It was also irritating because that side of the hotel also looks out to a field/ residential area that had construction work starting at 7am every morning including Christmas! So see if you can request a right hand side room if possible. The far side of the hotel is quite far from the maiin pool/ beach area which is slightly annoying so takes some planning. The pools and the beach were absolutely stunning and despite their "no reservation" policy you can place a towel on a lounge, have breakfast (which is divine!) and then go down. This is particularly worthwhile if you are on the otherside of the resort and a far walk away from the beach. Also, there are limited lounges so you do have to get in there quick to get a good position (sun facing). A good pointer is that if it's windy/ not great weather, use the other pool near the Spa which is more protected. The restaurants are fantastic- Preggo in particular is a lovely break from the regular Thai food with great food and ambience. If the weather is good (we only had 2.5 days out of 6 days) I totally recommend dinner on the beach at one of the beach bars on the left. (Away from the main strip). The Spa is absolutely wonderful and great service and great treatments. Overall I would totally recommend Amari hotel as it's one of the best 4 star hotels I have been to and would definitely go back when it's not wet season!!

Room Tip: If you're in a couple and they put you in the back building, ask for a RHS side room (with your...

we found the hotel was very nice and clean and relaxing but the place itself was busy very noisey and totally unsuitable for people with any kind of walking dificultys the paths were up and down blocked by bikes motor bikes and even food sellers it was easier to walk on the road then you only had to watch for the traffic

Room Tip: ask for a room with a seaview

Our family stay 1 night at Amari in Dec 2011. We booked the interconnecting superior rooms but was upgraded to the deluxe rooms for free. Generally, the rooms were ordinary but the landscaping of the resort is nice and well maintained. There were mosquitoes outside the hotel so windows and doors must be closed all the time.
Chaweng beach is clean but there is no sign of any marine life.. not even tiny crabs that we normally see at a beach. Koh Tao beach is definitely better.
However, we love the breakfast best. There is so much variety to choose from that we don't even need to eat our lunch after that.

We spent a week over Christmas at Amari and the hotel was perfect. Traveling with 3 adults and 1 infant we had trouble finding a triple+ room in Samui. Amari has a duplex room that works great for the family. Located north of the main area, it is still an easy walk into Chaweng Beach area. The pools were great for our 2 year old.

Service and staff were friendly and attentive. Also took in 3 days of Scuba diving through the onsite dive centre Discovery Divers.

We used the hotel airport shuttle service but I would not recommend as it is very expensive and the hotel is less than 10 minutes from the airport - plus we were required to wait 45+ minutes for additional passengers to clear immigration and baggage claim.

Overall a very good experience and would definitely stay again when traveling with family.

Room Tip: Duplex room is great for families. Quieter across the road with garden view.

I was pleasantly surprised at the warmth and friendly service that was evident from the moment I stepped into the lobby. The staff was really warm and friendly and offered us a seat, something I was not expecting and come over with all the neccessary documents for check in, while waiting (less than 5 mins), we got a welcome drink, information of the lovely island and in less than 10 mins, we were on our way to our room, totally hassle free!

The breakfast selection was good with daily changes to the menus, always greeted warmly and with a smile, and the staff were not afraid to go the extra mile to make me feel like a King during my holiday. Even with wet weather, they offer complimentary use of umbrellas, these little thoughts really helped! Housekeeping staff was very efficient, out for breakfast and in half hour back to my room and viola... all clean and tidy! The only problem I had was figuring our with light switch was for which lights.

Definately one of the best experiences I have had while on holiday... definately worth staying there!

What a beatiful hotel. We stayed here for four nights on our honeymoon. The location was great not to far from restaurants ans shopping markets. Room wasn't too big but was very nice. Bedroom was small could be a little bigger.
Staff didn't talk much to guests. I would say that would be the only down fall.

I was impressed with the hotel.

Well done

Room Tip: Great location!
