“Beautifully maintained resort with friendly staff”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

We were recommended the Amari Palm Reef by our travel agent and it was just perfect for what we wanted, our first overseas trip with our 11 month old daughter. The property and grounds were beautiful and so meticulously maintained, it was great having two pools to choose from. The deluxe room was well equipped and had a nice leafy outlook. Only slight downside was a small-ish bathroom. It was great having a portacot provided free of charge, they even made up the baby's bedding each day and arranged it all nicely, which was very cute. The staff were all really friendly and helpful and lovely with our baby, even taking her off our hands and taking her for a walk around the restaurant while we finished our breakfast. The resort felt very personal for such a large place, and we enjoyed meeting some of the other guests around the pool and at breakfast. And the buffet breakfast was very extensive and excellent quality, with everything you could possibly want - definitely set you up for the day! The Amari was also just the right distance out of the main part of town so it was a bit quieter and the property was more spacious, though still close enough to wander in to the busier part of Chaweng. Having said that, there was no need to walk into the main part of town, as there were plenty of restaurants, beach bars etc close by. Overall, had a wonderful trip and would definitely go back to the Amari if we were to visit Koh Samui again.

Room Tip: Villas over the road are a bit of a walk from the reception and breakfast area but very quiet and pe...

Just back from our third trip to samui, our second at the Amari, great resort, close the entertainment center of Chaweng.

Everything was perfect, no problems with a room change at the last minute, great and friendly staff, best wishes to "D" for her new baby in November.

We found every part of our stay satisfying and enjoyable. We thought we would look for another resort for our next trip, but could not find anything that even came close to the Amari.

To all management and staff, thanks again and see you next time.

Fran & David

Room Tip: Rooms across the road are nicer, larger and have a great garden area

We stayed at Amari in March 2013. In terms of location it gets 5 out of 5. Everthing was good, the staff, restaurant, swimming pool, dinning area. The only problem was it has small rooms (especially if you are travelling with a 2 year old) and very small bathrooms. I just wish you has built bigger bathrooms. Everything else was great.

I have stayed there four times now ... Absolutely the best location, quite but only five minutes walk to the action. We always try to stay at the Villa's at the end of the Hotel, there is a smaller pool there also. However people seem to communicate more there, seems like a little villiage :)
Staff excellent, food terrific. CAN'T GO WRONG

We stayed here in November 2012 for 3 nights. We had good experience here except for the bad weather. They offered to upgrade us to their beach-side suite bit we refused since we were already comfortable with our rooms. Since there were elderly people in our group, they gave us the rooms on the ground level. Their Italian restaurant was pretty good and had good vegetarian options.

The only thing I didn't like about Chaweng beach is that each hotel does not have it's own private beach, but that did not mar our experience at Amari Palm Reef.

Dear Megha,

Many thanks for your great review of your holiday with us! Sorry to hear that the weather didn't cooperate, but glad that you were comfortable and enjoyed yourself regardless.

Regarding your comment about the beach, I would just like to note that all beaches in Thailand are public property by law, so the only way they could be seen as being private is if access is geographically restrictive and only through a resort. Despite that they are still public :)

All the best for now and hope to see you here on your next visit,

Kind regards,

Amari is a good hotel.

Pool area is good but could do with slightly more attentive staff and the food could be a bit better. The bar, bar staff and the cocktails are great and there is happy hour 6-9 every day apart from Thursday when there is happy hour all evening. Also, a band plays most evenings and the female singer in the band is amazing - her voice almost sounds like Jennifer Hudson - she is very talented.

The breakfast is good but not amazing.

Our room was sprayed with insect repellant by the hotel every day which was great.

We were on holiday for a few weeks in various places and Amari hotel were able to do our laundry very cheaply.

The spa is very good - we had massages in the open air which were very romantic.

'The strip' on koh samui is a bit of fun - no it isn't the most elegant of places but what do you expect! If you want complete peace and quiet, don't stay here.

Overall yes I would recommend amari but don't expect full on luxury.

This was our first trip to Koh Samui, which we decided to check out for a weekend getaway from Hong Kong - we have travelled to Thailand quite a bit, but had never been to Koh Samui and I'm glad we decided to try it out.

Amari is at the South end of Chaweng Beach, which is just a 10-15 minute drive from the airport. This fact was confirmed for us by the 6 - 8 flights a day that flew closely overhead as took off or landed - noticeable, but not a problem. You can pick-up a cab or car from the airport pretty easily as you arrive, but they do gouge you somewhat on the price - we paid THB500 from the airport (which I was fine with at the time), but the hotel only charged THB400 for the return trip, which is usually the expensive end.

As others have mentioned, the resort is spread across two sides of the main road, which is not a problem, as the crossing is patrolled and they stop traffic for you. We ended up on the side opposite the reception / main restaurant area, which was fine for us, as it was nice and quiet. The rooms are generally in groups of 2 or 4, either next to each other or 2-up and 2-down. The room we were initially given was back off the pathway, but ended up being right next to the noisy main road. We called reception pretty much as soon as we got there and they were happy to show us another room, right at the back of the resort near the pool. The room quality was not as good, but as it was nice and quiet, we were happy. It was ground floor, so I had a slight concern about the noise from someone above us, but we never heard a sound from them.

The resort itself is slightly tired looking and this showed generally in the quality of the buildings - especially on our side of the road - and the room interiors. The bathroom in the room we ended up in was absolutely tiny, but the room itself was ok in size and the bed was very large and very comfortable. We spent nearly all day, every day at the pool (we made a decision at the outset of the vacation that this one was about chilling out, not sightseeing!), which was brilliant, as the room was right there if we needed to pop back. I also preferred this pool, as it was much less crowded than the 'main' one near the restaurant and reception on the other side. The only downside is that there were less attendants etc, which meant it was a struggle to order food etc and we ran out of towels on a few occasions. The staff at Amari are generally very friendly and helpful. Their level of English varies, but they try pretty hard to understand what you need and to get it for you. There are a huge number of gardeners and attendants generally and they all smile and say ‘hello’ as you walk past, which is nice.

We had a lovely breakfast at the restaurant each day and ate dinner and lunch there a few times. The food was of quite a high standard and fairly reasonably priced for a resort. We also had cocktails at the beach bar, which were very nice. We signed up to have the beach BBQ buffet one night, having seen it set up on the beach previously, but the weather meant it was moved inside - it was still a nice buffet meal, but not as atmospheric in the restaurant rather than beach. We also ate at Prego restaurant for lunch one day, and although quite pricey, it was very nice also. It is a very easy stroll down the main road to a huge number of great restaurants and shops. I found the quality of most of the 'bargains' to be better than places like Patong and we had some lovely, well priced meals.

If you crave 'normal' food, you can get all sorts of western fare, as well as Starbucks, McDonalds, Haagen Das (had a lovely banana crepe for dessert one night!) and various street vendors abound. The annoying factors were the Muay Thai and Q Bar (and a couple of others) trucks with loud speakers advertizing fights or trolling for customers to pick up and ship into their bar. They seemed to go past every few minutes and are incredibly annoying while you're trying to have a conversation over dinner and they stop outside your restaurant. I wouldn't go to either place, purely due to their annoying tooting as you walk along the street and obnoxious speakers and music.

I did not try the spa while at Amari, although they seemed to have good specials advertized, when compared to what was on offer elsewhere. I did go to the gym each day though. It is incredibly small, with a very limited range of machines; 2 treadmills, a bike, an elliptical, some free weights and a TRX machine for 'everything else'. There were always 2-3 people in there and any more would have been a real problem. There was never an attendant of any kind and although I was there before 8am each day, the fridge always run out of water either before or just after my arrival and the water cooler was usually empty. I noticed a few guests just popping in and helping themselves to water, presumably because they knew it was free and had run out of it in their rooms, which was quite rude and cheeky. There were glass water bottles provided in the room each day, which were never enough and there didn't seem to be anywhere to buy it at the resort, but it's pretty easy to walk 5 minutes to one of the many convenience stores to buy cheap bottled water.

We only went to the beach 1-2 times, as it's not overly impressive, but saw a huge range of styles and options for property types along the beach. In comparison, Amari seemed at the upper end of the middle range at the South end. We didn't venture too far from 'our end' so I am not sure what else is on offer on other parts of the island. The beach at this part of the island is not what would attract you to come here.

I enjoyed my stay at Amari, but I am not sure if I would return here again, or try something different next time. They certainly do what they promise to do, but not much more - there is not really a 'wow' factor of any kind. I will return to Koh Samui though and really enjoyed the direct flight from HK on Bangkok Air (boutique airline, as they keep referring to themselves) - the flight and service were great and actually on time and the Samui airport is lovely.

Room Tip: If you like things a little quieter, opt for a room on the far side of the road (away from the recep...

Dear Sarah,

Many thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed and thorough review of your stay with us.

I'm sure it will be very helpful for future travelers to Samui, so it is much appreciated. I'm sorry to correct you but may I just point out that we are actually located at the quieter northern end of Chaweng Beach, not the southern end.

It's great that you were able to enjoy your weekend away from Hong Kong, the direct flight must certainly be welcome. We hope you will continue to visit our beautiful island,

With warm regards,
