“A pieces of paradise”
Reviewed 26 October 2009

My husband and I spent ten days in Koh Samui, an awesome island, seems took out from an ideal advertising spot. We stayed at Baan Haad Ngam Boutique Resort and Spa, a quietly and peaceful hotel, although it is situated on Chaweng Road, not far away from the nightlife agitation: boutiques, restaurants, bars, pubs, terraces, bazaars, marketplaces, etc.
Our hotel was built in traditional inside-out style. Entire domain is full of palm-tree, bushes with different flowers and many, many orchids, all is delight and charm. The inner garden is ful of vegetation, water coridors with colorful fish and water lily and little fountains, but the whole landscape is dominated by a nice waterfall, which begin right under the front-desk lobby. On the sea-side are Olivio restaurant (with Italian and thai speciality) and the splendid Infinity Pool.
The room is large, with a big balcony, spotless, cozy, furnished in thai style, with a great bed with baldaquin and nice spot-light which give a romantic atmosphere. We found daily on the beds swans, elephants, dolphins, monkeys, etc made from towels by the house keeper just for fun. The bathroom was great with jacuzzi and shower in separate rooms.
The whole staff was always smilley and helpfull.

We stayed at Baan Haad Ngam for 8 nights at the Deluxe Villa. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
- The staff are amazing and make you feel like home. They make these cute animal towels so each time it was a sweet surprise when you get back to your room. After a couple days, they will know when you leave the hotel so they never bothered you in the morning if you are still sleeping and will wait until you leave.
- Olivio is a must visit when you are in Samui. We ate at many nice restaurants worldwide so we were pleased with the excellent food there.
- The pool is beautiful and it's a perfect trade to the uninviting not so clear water Chaweng beach

Cons:
- I don't know if it's the weather or seasonal, but there are SOOO many flies everywhere. At Olivio's, at the pool, etc. It makes it hard when you want to enjoy your breakfast, lunch or dinner when battling with flies.
- The room is a little dark at first but after a while, I actually love it. It's kinda cozy and the color of the wall is warm. I put the room under cons, just because you definitely need to use the mosquito nets or you will get major bites. The resort has really beautiful landscaping but the drawback is since the bathroom windows has to be opened to let the odor out, mosquitos or other insects might crawl in.
- There is no beach in front of the hotel, well - at least when we were there. To get to Chaweng beach, you have to walk just a bit in the water.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Baan Haad Ngam - kudos to the staff!

I have so much to say about this hotel that I don't know where to start!

My husband and I booked a 2 night stay at this hotel as a finale to our 2 week holiday in Thailand. We booked it based on other glowing reviews about this resort and the photos we had seen on the website and we are completely flabbergasted. We had been staying at very nice 4-5* properties so far at the same price and had been given the very strong impression that this hotel was of the same calibre. But we were very mistaken!

The hotel is very small and is divided by a road running through the middle of it, in fact I would call it more of a road-side motel than a resort. We usually like small boutique hotels but this hotel had no charm about it at all. The rooms have no views except of another guests room directly opposite which are so close that you can see straight into other guests rooms and some of the rooms actually looked directly at a brick wall! The first room we were taken to was on the ground floor and right next to the road...literally one of the windows ran alongside the road with motorbikes and trucks going past. The bedroom itself was actually nice with a big bed and romantically hung mosquito net but bathrooms were very dark and dreary. Bad lighting, no window, cement sink countertops that were so old they had cracked and were crumbling away in places and to top it all off dirty! There were blood smears on the walls in several places were the previous guest had clearly been killing mosquitos.

We had our 1 year old daughter with us so I complained about the room's cleanliness and the noise from the road and asked to be moved. They found us another room after first showing me two other ground floor rooms that looked straight at a wall only about 2m in front. The room was upstairs and was much brighter but we had the power generator right outside which was incredibally loud and the power kept going on and off in the local area so the generator was going on and off until very late at night. On further inspection of the room we then found the toilet seat was broken and had fallen off and a tacky paint job with paint spills and smears on lampshades etc and dust and hair in all the corners of the room where the mop clearly could not reach..

If you got a bungalow (non available when we booked) then at least you are the right side of the road but they still look VERY dark with no nice area to sit outside and relax in relative privacy and are close to the pool and restaurant which is popular at night so it is also noisy!

The swimming pool looks nothing like it does in the pictures on the website. It is tiny and the area around the pool for the sunbeds is so small that you are literally crammed in on top of each other touching head to toes and rubbing arms!. If you move the sunbed even slightly you fall off the edge of the decking! There is no space for a child to play or even walk safely. It is all cement and cobbled stones.

The beach at this end of Chaweng is fantastic BUT unlike the other hotels along this stretch the beach directly in front of the hotel is not suitable for sitting on so no sunbeds only large cement steps to climb up and down to the beach like you are sitting on a cement platform above the beach.

The Italian restaurant was very good and the staff in the restaurant were lovely and very attentive. I would recommend this restaurant as a place to have dinner if you were fed up of Thai Food.

We made numerous requests to speak to the hotel manager - I must have sat at the recption desk for 3 hours overall trying to speak to the hotel manager who was "unavailable". One staff said he was at a conference and could not be disturbed, another then said they had been calling the manager at least 6 times but he never answered his mobile phone and had no idea when and if he would return to the hotel that day or the day after. If there had been an emergency at the hotel then lord knows how this guy could have been reached!

We actually informed the hotel about 2 hours after arriving that we felt they had misrepresented / over-sold their hotel and the facilities and we felt the hotel was not safe for us to stay with a 1year old toddler and we wanted to check out that day. This was met with uproar and no apologies or desire to convince us to stay or try and improve our stay at all. We were just told "That's fine check out but we are charging you for the full 2 nights". We had not even had our bags delivered to our rooms at this stage and we had only booked the hotel the night before so less that 24 hours before we checked in.

We ended up staying the 1 night and left early the next morning to the AMARI Palm Reef next door which was fantastic. Beautiful pool area, beach sunbeds, lovely Spa and lots of space for kiddies to stretch their legs AND CHEAPER!!!!!!!! I would actually go back and stay at the AMARI again. The beach and water was superb!

Despite all our requests to speak to the manager we have still not heard anything from him BUT we did get an email from the hotel confirming that we had checked out early BUT they were still charging us for the 2 nights. How very efficient they are!

If you are a backpacker or young couple looking to party it up in Chaweng (think 18-30's holiday) then this would be a good place to stay but if you are looking for a tropical holiday and relaxation then definitely not.

We arrived to the hotel and from the photo's on the www.lostinthailand.com website where we had booked our room, our expectations were high. We decided to go for a more expensive resort this time and we were not dissapointed. We had booked the Deluxe Villa with Jacuzzi and it was perfect. The staff were very polite and always helpful to our needs. the resort itself is stunning and not to mention the incredible infinity pool. The restaurant was excellent as was the food. Overall we had a great 4 nights here and would not hesitate to recommend this gem to anyone. Thanks to the staff at www.lostinthailand.com and to all the staff at Baan Haad Ngam for giving us our dream holiday in Samui. We will be back again next year!!

we spent 8 nights at this hotel, my husband had been to Koh Samui years ago and couldn't believe how commercial Chaweng has become. Fortunately this hotel is perfectly situated, on the far end of the beach. If you walk along the beach there are fabulous restaurants, you can also catch the taxi into town - 5 mins- if you want busy bars and shops. Our room was lovely, quiet and clean, the staff were very friendly and attentive. Breakfast was a fabulous buffet, overlooking the long beautiful beach. Would definitely recommend this for people who don't want to be in the middle of all the action, enjoy relaxing by a lovely pool and like good food.

We had the pleasure of spending 7 glorious nights in this beautiful property.

We reserved a superior room in the tasteful 'hotel building' which is 3 stories tall. Our room was quite spacious and tastefully decorated (and included a jacuzzi bath for two, and a separate enclosed rain shower). The private balcony overlooked the hotel's gorgeous water garden. The hotel also has several private bungalows which are available at a higher rate. We took a look at one, and it was quite nice. Our room in the hotel building served our purposes, and was very adequate.

The infinity swimming pool was a delight, and from the poolside chaise loungers you had a spectacular view of the entire Chaweng Bay.

Olivio, the hotel restaurant, was fantastic... not your typical 'hotel restaurant'. In the evenings, this is a 'destination place' and folks come from neighboring hotels for dinner. Luiggi, the chef, is Italian - and the cuisine rivaled what we've experienced in San Francisco's "North Beach Neighborhood" or New York City's "Little Italy". We ate here 3 of our 7 nights!

The staff was very gracious, and by day #2 - they already knew us by name & already started doing little niceties for us... very keen on anticipating our every need. It's very evident that Baan Haad Ngam's management is customer focused. When we checked in, both the resident manager and general manager introduced themselves. And several time during our stay- the managers would check in on their guests.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone that likes a good 4 Star Boutique Property. The beautiful hotel buildings, tranquil surroundings, and wonderful beachfront location are just the best & we will return again, soon.

Great Staff, Good rooms and Very Good included Breakfast. Good 15 minute walk down to Centre but thats a good thing and you would not even now you were staying in Chaweng. Lots of local fisherman at this end of the beach. Happy hour Cocktails at 4pm were the best!
