“Fantastic location, great rooms, perfect beach/pool,really friendly and helpful staff”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

We stayed here a week early July 2013. Surprised about some of the reviews as we found the place really great. Staff really good, rooms great, some construction happening "next door" in what will be new 2nd pool area but never heard it and probably finished now 3 weeks later.

We moved out of a older wel lestablished 5 star place further north on the beach after 2 nights after seeing Synergy on a morning beach walk. It was a no brainer - $100/night per room cheaper and much better quality. Just looked at their website for photo's it really does look like that and believe me I've stayed where reality doesn't match the brochure.

Selling points were:

Best part of Chaweng Beach for swimming - can't swim in some parts of the beach as 30cm/ 1 foot deep eg the 5 star place we intially had booked. Really nice infinity pool and bar area, heaps of loungers and umbrellas pool side probably 10 times as many as possible guest bed/rooms on the beach.

Rooms really good - very modern, bathrooms large and very clean. Very good (and quiet) aircon, linen etc very good quality (surprised at some other comments on this - not our experience) We opted for 2 x Sea View Rooms - 407 & 405 (M&D + 2 teenage kids) - sure not Beach Front but then they have rooms called Beach Front which are. We could "see the sea" from the deck it aint an uninterrupted vista of the sea but hey walk 25-30m and your literally on the beach anyway.

Staff really friendly and helpful (big thank you to all of you - great service couldn't be more helpful). Place feels like you are staying in a modern Boutique Hotel. They are close to finishing a much larger pool/resturant complex (probably finished now) which will be make place even better.

Location wise it is about half way along the main Chaweng beach. Shopping, resturants on main street is great but you are about 75m down a side road so nice and quite but very quick easy walk from the bustle of markets, no pumping music etc. New hotel so many locals don't know where it is - yet. Local Tour operators did though.

Hotel only opened recently so all new team there but they are customer focused and work hard. Management were really helpful also. Resturant was still getting up to speed but meet expectations food was fine - actually the Thai meal we had one evening was one of the better ones in a 2 week trip. Breakfast OK - all hotels pretty much same - best bet to go and eat at one of the many local resturants, bars etc than in hotel anyway. Happy Hour when we stayed was more like Happy Half Day starting at 1:00PM.

We have stayed in many tropical island places around the Pacific/Australia/SEA and this place is really a gem.

Room Tip: Sea View rooms are worth the extra cost sea view is a not what you might think but usually never is...

The staff at synergy samui are amazing. So friendly and attentive it is a shame about the hotel, it really lets them down.
We stayed in a villa Seaview room. They need to change the names of the villas because it would indicate a "view of the sea". Not the case, it just means it is a free standing villa, the sea was nowhere to be seen. They are quite small but they appear to be new. If you are offered villa 410 I would ask for a different one. After a shower there is a horrendous smell that wafts from the sink hole that can only be described as raw sewerage. I mentioned this to the receptionist and we did get a lovely room deodorizer which was nice! But alas didn't solve the problem.
It appears that half the resort is still under construction. Perhaps once it is finished all the kinks (and smells) will have been worked out and it will be fabulous.
The pool and pool bar are great and the food is fabulous too.
Good luck!

You know that sinking feeling when you really, really want to like something, but you know that its just not happening???? We watched Synergy getting built when we were in Samui last year and decided to stay there on our return this year, as it is without doubt on the best stretch of beach in Samui. The hotel has only been open a few months and has an amazing infinity pool overlooking the beach. We stayed for 16 nights, and unfortunately, our opinion of Synergy deteriorated on a daily basis.

Firstly, I want to stress that the Staff were fantastic. From Reception, Breakfast Staff to Housekeeping, everyone went out of their way to assist us with anything we requested.

Initially we were in Room 404 which is a Seaview Room. The rooms are ok, nothing spectacular, and slightly small, but no complaints. Unfortunately, the finish of the rooms leaves a lot to be desired. The basin in the bathroom had literally come away from the wall, so that if you leaned on it, then you were in danger of having it fall over! During the first week we were awoken during the night by a rat that had gnawed a hole through the ceiling plaster and was running around the room! We moved to Room 401 which is a Beach Front room for the rest of the night. This room was identical to 404, but the layout meant that the bed was in a different spot, and the bedside table blocked the door to the bathroom...very strange...

The next day we were "upgraded" to a spa room. Honestly, it reminded me of staying in a caravan! It looked very old and run down. Even the pillows and linen were worn. The next morning we asked to be moved again and ended up in Room 406, which was identical to our original room...even down to the basin in the bathroom being dislodged from the wall! This room had a distinctive sewerage smell coming from the bathroom. The night manager told us that the previous guests had complained about it too, so they were well and truly aware of the problem. We had to go to Tesco to buy some air freshener in a vain attempt to mask the smell, however at this stage we were sick of packing and unpacking, and there didn't appear to be many more options.

As I mentioned earlier, the infinity pool is awesome, and we alternated from the beach to the pool all day. There were quite a few sun beds both around the pool and also on the beach, however there were insufficient umbrellas to provide shade around the pool, and the few that there were available were very small and almost translucent , so not really much help.

Breakfast is served at the restaurant on the decking overlooking the beach which is a beautiful setting. If you like to eat eggs every day, then you will have no problems as the chef will cook whatever style you like freshly for you. If you want to have toast however, its a different story. The bread is so stale that honestly, you could crumble it into breadcrumbs in your hands...and that's before you toast it! They just keep putting the same container of stale bread out each day! There are also very few condiments for your toast if you are brave enough to have it. We ordered club sandwiches one day at the restaurant for lunch, and received the same crumbly stale bread. The restaurant is expensive and very, very average. There are so many other places to eat which are both better and cheaper, so why bother?

Lastly, to add insult to injury, Synergy is the ONLY place the we came across that does not have Happy Hour! Everywhere else along the beach and also along the street has happy hour for at least part of the day. It was ludicrous that we had to get out of the pool ( with pool bar) to go elsewhere for reasonably priced drinks.

Would we stay at Synergy again? Regretfully no....

I really wanted to be able to write an excellent review here ... But I can't do that in all honesty. I think this is one of those hotels which will always attract mixed reviews depending on your perspectives, expectations and experience on any given day.

This review should not be seen as a reflection on the SYNERGY STAFF ( and I mean, those who work only at the Synergy resort part of the complex) ... They were amazing ... Francois, Ms Weng the Manager, the housekeeping staff, the breakfast staff ... All do wonderful jobs. They try so hard .... But they are working in an environment where other people just don't get the importance of doing things right! Nothing is too much trouble, and they do work hard ... But others in the organisation let them down.

The taxi driver struggled to know how to find the resort .... Luckily we did .... But the entrance is not what you expect of a top notch resort ... Old gates and a gravel car park ... A footpath to an open reception with a couple of sheds to the right ... Not that great for a first impression.

We got an earlier check in which was great. We were happy to just use the pool, but the bartender struggled to understand we wanted a towel .... Sent us back to reception, even though the sign said to get them from him ... The towels are in your room. Amazing how the bartender's English got better once he realised we were guests of the hotel and not just trying to use the pool!!

Many of the pictures in the brochures and websites are accurate to some extent .... However I do remain unconvinced that the pool is 23 metres long, and given there is a couple of metres for steps and a lying area, and another couple taken up with the bar, there is probably about 10 metres in length of usable swimming space. Sun lounges in this area were rarely used and plenty of choice. The wooden decking and walkway decking all get very hot during the day .... Don't walk bare foot!

We stayed in a Beachfront Villa ... Only two of these (401 and 402) are truly on the beach front yet the brochure says there are five in this category ... Not sure where the other three are but suspect they are the ones located behind these - which would be more accurately described as the sea view ones. These are right next to the pool ... And the construction zone (see below).

Beautiful deck out the front with sun lounges and views of the beach ... Room set up a little strange with storage for luggage in the bathroom ... Pretty much set up for honeymooners and couples I feel. I also saw in three of the private jacuzzi villas. The beachfront ones are supposed to be 37 square metres ... The private jacuzzi ones 110 ... No way they are that large - the room is smaller than the beach front ones .... The only way they would get to 110 square metres is by including the outside jacuzzi (which is a bathtub!), surrounding decking and grass areas.

The rooms contain everything you could want ... Ours was new and there are plenty of little touches which make them special. Along with the staff, these rooms are their best selling point. Bed is comfortable and the shower has great pressure from both the hand held and roof mounted shower heads. Beach amazing ... Great little beach stoves near the Banana Fan Sea who sell spring rolls and satays for a bargain for lunch. You will pay about 200 - 400 for a Lilo from the beach sellers ... Depending on quality and size.

After our first 12 hours here, we thought we had made a wonderful choice and were in heaven .... Alas, it went downhill from there and this is why I have to rate this experience so lowly.

The motto of the hotel is "Beyond Expectations" ... It does not deliver on this. Many of my problems may be perfectly acceptable to other travellers ... However, I had made some very specific enquiries before booking, been given a lot of assurances and ended feel very let down by the experience. If you are aware of what to expect in advance, hopefully you will have more realistic expectations than I did because I was promised the world.

We were pushed to pay for the full amount in advance before arrival .... I now know why .... Once you see the hotel at the moment, you will not want to pay full price for it! Only pay a deposit and the rest upon being satisfied with the room and facilities would be the best bet.

The infinity pool looks wonderful .... And feels better ... But someone has stuffed up badly in the planning here. The benefit of such a pool is it allows unobstructed views over its edge. The hotel (more specifically the restaurant) has placed permanent bamboo structures straight in front of the pool with curtains all over them ... So your views are limited to about two metre slots between the structures. You can see to the south okay, but nothing to the north. They could be moved further along towards the tree and bar end where there is nothing at the moment, and this would improve that aspect immensely. Given no-one used them in four days we or our friends were there, they are just wasted.

Other reviews have mentioned the breakfast .... Not great at all other than the coffee! There are plenty of staff and not to many guests ... Why not have some a la carte type offerings like eggs benedict or waffles made to order to go with pancakes. Fruit needs to be covered and kept cool ... Bacon and sausages were cold - cook smaller amounts and refill more often. Have a choice of coffees made to order. All little things that top class resorts can do well that need to be worked on.

Before booking I wanted to make sure all construction would be finished and that the noise would not be an issue from places such as the KC Club and the Ark Bar. The Buri Rasa would have been our choice, but we were turned off by the reviews about the noise there. We were assured that there would be minimal noise at Synergy and construction would be finished .... Everything would be prefect and we could enjoy our beach front deck and relax. We did take this with some doubt given what we knew about Chaweng and expected fireworks and some music etc. we should have stuck with the Buri Rasa!!

Within 10 minutes of sitting on our deck that first night, a really, really bad band started playing right next door in the restaurant of the Banana Fan Sea. Not sure if it was karaoke night, but they were shocking! The music was fine - the singing awful!! At 2am you could still hear the "doof doof" of techno music blaring from the other bars ... We knew it was too good to be true to expect that not to happen, but the glass windows of these rooms facing the water let great views in, but also all the noise at night ... Perhaps they could be double glazed? The deck could be great for during the day (except for the noise explained below) ... And provides a nice place to relax, but is useless at night if that is what you are after.

At 730am the next morning we started hearing the sounds of electric grinders and saws, and hammering. It was coming from right next to our room .... Not what we signed up for! We complained; The Manager came; The work continued; she contacted the "Big Manager". It turns out that whilst the construction work for the Synergy is finished as promised, the "Le Murraya Beach Club" is still very much being built.

The "Big Manager" came and sat with us for breakfast .... Promised construction noise would not occur before 10am each morning and would finish by 5pm. Also agreed to refund one nights charge. We thought this would be the end of it .... It was not ... The next morning it started again at 8am ... Really unimpressed that Manager Ben failed to keep his side of the deal - not a man of honour in my eyes at all!

As I said at the start, this is not a reflection on those who work so hard at Synergy ... But they are let down by people like this from the organisation. Realistically, It would have been cheaper to stop the work until we left than having to refund us for their broken promises .... My advice to anyone who is thinking of booking here again, make your own enquiries and get your guarantees in writing before you book ... It was all we had to fall back on when things went wrong.

The Beach Club area is owned by the same people who own the Synergy and the Le Murraya Residence and Resort. Guests staying at Le Murraya can transfer down to the beach and use the facilities for free as day guests ... Until the beach club is finished, they can use the Synergy Pool etc. Members of the public can also pay to use the facilities. This was all described to us as "letting people who cannot afford to stay at Synergy use the facilities". It seems that you pay a higher rate to stay at the Synergy, and for that, you get the pleasure of sharing all of your facilities with everyone else who wants to pay a small amount to hang out with you for the day. Not sure this will work in the long term .... Perhaps there needs to be separate areas for both groups?

At the moment, the "beach club" does operate .... They set up tables and chairs, with tacky, disgusting yellow Western Union umbrellas each morning. People can buy a sun lounge for 100 Baht for the day as well. The staff stand around and do very little .... Except for the one chap who seemed to spend his time videoing girls taking showers rather than taking drink orders. The cook seems to spend more time on the decking next to the Synergy pool squatting and counting money than cooking .... Although, he only cooks pizzas - everything else comes from the Synergy kitchen! For the effort they go to, why bother? They would be lucky to get 15 customers a day and for the inconvenience it causes guests at the Synergy, I am not sure where the value for money is in this venture.

So for our over $A200 per night, we were greeted each morning with a symphony of power tools, and view from our deck obscured by yellow umbrellas and clean white sand torn up by the 4WD and Tractors used to launch the jet skis nearby. All of which could be fixed very easily if the beach club staff took more time with the placement of umbrellas ( and used the nice white ones instead of ugly yellow!!) and were given some large rakes to fix the beach instead of standing around wasting time.

Other things promised in advertising but not delivered ... There is no docking station in the rooms; there are no shops on site for souvenirs etc ( plenty just outside on the street and mini marts and money changers galore close by); the Serena Spa is not operating yet and we saw a couple of brochures but certainly no tour desk. Again, when you claim you will go beyond expectations, you do expect that what is in the brochures is delivered upon.

Would I stay again? Maybe ... Only because of the staff, and only once they get better organised and set up is a manner more befitting the prices they charge (and if i could be sure i was not going to be overrun with day trippers every day!!). If it was less than $A100 a night, for the location and service there would be no complaints ... But if they want to be a top class resort and charge type class prices, they need to improve. To compare .... The Ibis we stayed at in Bophut was better in facilities but lacking in service for one third of the price of this place ... To justify that extra expense there needs to be something special here.

Best advice I can give .... Make contact with the hotel directly, ask all the questions about things that are important to you, get the answers in writing so you can hold them to their promises, and don't pay the full amount up front. Once they get your money, you will struggle to get them to uphold their promises (which comes from the very top - not the staff you see all the time!) .... But if you know what you are getting into, and you get a fair price, this has so much potential and could be a great place to stay.

Spend our first trip to thailand here and had a great experience.
Pros
1. The location is perfect for beach and close to restaurants and shops
2. Beach front rooms offer amazing value for money
3. Infinity pool is the best along the main beach
4. Resort is quiet and away from most of the huddle and bustle of the city center, while still being in walking distance of activities
5. Resort offers gym but no spa in low season wasn't an issue as there was one right next door
6. This resort was so new our room had only been used once or twice, very clean and friendly staff.
7. The main supervisor will bend over backwards for you if you ask with a smile. They even changed the pool music for us too lift it up a bit.
Con
1. New resort means teething issues - staff still understanding western language and way we like things done (but isn't that what traveling is about)
2. Breakfast is light on but just ask for the menu and pick something and explain how you want it clearly. The chef will whip you up anything if you can be clear.
3. Bathrooms smell a little due to thailands water - just remember to keep your room aerated.
4. Remember to ask for fresh water in your room otherwise you will pay.
5. On quiet days random people use the pool because there is no signage. Just tell the staff your not happy with this and they will ask them to move on.
6. Be prepared for thailand in general - Thai tummy isn't pleasant!

the hotel is nicely located, situated near banana fan resort, the beach is very nice better than the north of chaweng. The hotel is newly built and it clean, the pool is great with a good view at the beach.

Now the disappointing part, since it a new hotel some of the room are not finish. Our bathroom was not paint and it already cracking. Also in the bathroom, it was so small that we didn't have room to put our stuff (sink only). i would not do business with the one who built this place, it lack of details. As with new hotel, the staff is still in formation(even the GM is new), half of the staff doesn't speak english or very little. As of results, a few of our orders was mix up. At my check out, the guy did a mistake by over charging me, i told him to correct it and he wasn't familiar with the machine. I did pull out the manual instruction, since i was in a hurry i told him to give me the over in cash instead of waiting for him. On a good side, the staff are very nice and willing to help.

So would i recommend the hotel, yes if the hotel charge as a 3 star hotel but since it consider as a 4 star and charge a lot. You can have better around for less. Maybe consider Le Murraya, since it the same owner, you can use the Synergy pool and beach section but i think it unfair since you paid to be in front of the beach and Le Murraya is not.

Room is simple, small, cosy, new and clean. Able to get it at a good price of US$120 nett per night.
Good location, near to center Chaweng. Right on the beach with an infinity pool facing the beach.
Breakfast is simple and not much choices. Only feedback is the bread is stale, not fresh. Fruits are not covered and there are houseflies around.
No gyms, massage, etc at the hotel. However, massage is not an issue as next to Synergy are banana fan and Rasa Buri, both with massage and we could just walk in and have the massage.
However, if at the same price as Banana fan or Rasa Buri, I would choose them as they are bigger hotel and more established.
