“Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2011

Just thought I'd let everyone know about the Centara Grand Hotel in Koi Samui. It is a beautiful hotel which makes you feel like you're in paradise. The hotel staff cannot do enough for you and are always smiling and greeting you with Sawadee Kan - excellent. We were upgraded from the Centara Villa's to the Centara Grand and were very pleased indeed. The food is excellent however we mainly had breakfast in the hotel as the prices for drinks were a little excessive when you have so much on your doorstep with restaurants within 2 minutes walk - you just have to politely say "no" to the tailor shops but they are friendly.

The gardens, beach and the grand building are beautiful - as I say - paradise. I would definately recommend this hotel and will be coming back very soon.

Kind Regards,
Janine and Steve from the UK

Room Tip: We stayed in room 811 which was excellent - I cannot imagine any of the rooms being of poor quality.

This was our second visit to the Centara Grand Beach resort. I wrote to them prior to our visit and asked for a nice room (non smoking) and paid for The Club upgrade.
On our arrival we were shown to our room which was on a smoking floor and had seen better days. The furniture was old and stained and the grouting in the shower was black at the bottom (should have been grey). The bedding was changed but not every day and there were small stains which looked like blood on the pillow and duvet cover. I am particularly fussy about my bedding and the pillows and duvets were long overdue a replacement (I had to spray perfume on them before I could sleep as the smell of previous occupants was very much evident!). The balcony was not swept the whole time we were there (7 nights). Breakfast was taken in the ballroom rather than the proper dining room as it is currently being refurbished. The food was plentiful and varied. There were a lot of flies around though. The staff were lovely and always welcomed us with a smile.
The Centara Villas were closed at the time and all of their guests were housed at the Centara Grand (most were in the pool villas) but there were always sun beds available and it never seemed crowded.
The Club room was worth the extra money. The staff there were fantastic – a special mention must go to Banana who was lovely and always ensured your glass was topped up and knew exactly what everyone was drinking. Not surprising he was employee of the month! The snacks in the evening were fresh, hot and plentiful.
The hotel is situated at the quieter end of the ‘strip’ and once you are inside the grounds it is like an oasis of calm!
Would we stay again ? Mmmm not sure. It is in a good location and the pools are lovely but the rooms are definitely in need of an upgrade. I had hoped that as a returning guest we may have been treated a little more favourably and been given a refurbished room (there is a lot of building going on currently and as a result quite noisy at times) rather than a tired tatty room.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

Even knowing than there is rennovation going on in hotel..

I wasn´t prepared for endless grinder noise in my own teracce, specially when paid for one of most expensive rooms (Deluxe Pool Suite).. by trying to enjoy caputcino in onw private pool.. was not possible cause endless noise... as well the kids activites was compete disapointment.. again even knowing than kids club was under rennovation... it just question of values for managment.. to take one very weared and dirty hotel room to serve as kids club.. we tried that once..for hour with hotel nanny... .. and after one hour kids had green nose of dust or mold.. and they were very pored cause there was absolutelly nothing to do...

Food in hotel restaurants is normal.. expensive and nothing special..... but some days we were lazy and didnt got out.... room service food was also very poor..

skills of engliss of crew is quite limited..

but good thing in this hotel is than when you openly tell your unhappyness.. they really make thier best to solve your issue... in this part this is one of best hotels I have been.. ..

Maybe after this rennovation is over hotel can be outstanding

Me and my family (all adults) have just spent 12 nights at the Centara and having read the reviews prior to going on my trip I was a little worried. Although I am aware people moan for moaning's sake, I tried to stay positive and off we went.

I have stayed in Thailand before - in Kata, Phuket - and my expectations for Thailand were already high. Initially I was a little disappointed, just because i think i was looking for things to be wrong. Apart from the the furniture in the main foyer looking like it had seen better days, the place was absolutely fine. (The main building where the reception is, is completely open to the outside, allowing stray cats and tame birds to come in. The upholstery is worn, and i did see the cats scratching at the chairs one day. The birds that fly throughout the main foyer are also able to go to the toilet while sitting on the chandeliers.)

The rooms are of a good size and decoration is colonial. They are cleaned every day, towels will be issued daily if you leave them on the floor of the bathroom. The workmanship of the tiling in the bathroom could be better - but that to me is not enough to be put off.

Staff were always friendly, so i'm not sure what people mean about them not being?

The prices are typical for a hotel. We ate out on the main strip most nights (Rose & Crown, The Wave Samui and Noori's Indian do really nice food and would highly recommend them), but had breakfast in the hotel every day which is of a very good standard and a really wide selection. We also relaised that it was cheaper to buy off the beach vendors instead of paying 3 times the price from the hotel bars.

The location is great. There are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and massage parlours close by. Nothing is too far away as the hotel is located in central Chaweng.

The hotel is generally clean and comfortable, so if you don't have massive demands for your holiday, then this is an excellent choice. You have to pay for perfection!!

We stayed here for 7 nights and were offered either of a 'free' buffet any night of the week or a free massage each for the longer stay. We chose the Saturday night bbq buffet which was beautifully cooked and fresh. The tropical deserts were too much of a temptation and couldn't be resisted. We chose to include the buffet breakfast in our package and weren't dissappointed. Anyone requiring European, Japan/Asian or western style were catered for. The beautiful gardens were a delight to walk through. The gym was very very well set up for a resort gym which we utilise every second day. The hotel beach towels were so big, soft and comfy to lie on. Being able to step off the lawn straight into the ocean for a swim was very special. Then after a quick rinse off it was into the pool for a swim up to the dip and sip for a cocktail. This propety is located at the quieter end of Chaweng Beach but within walking distance to any of the many resturaunts and massage providers.

Room Tip: We stayed in a deluxe ocean facing room. From what I could see all these rooms had good sized balco...

How come the negative comments? The hotel was superb - great colonial atmosphere with excellent facilities and attentive, ultra-efficient staff. In a superb location, it has everything you could ask for.

I recommend the 'Club' - certainly worth it! - and almost ran out of clothes to send to the free laundry service. The pools are excellent and the wide range of restaurants offer a good alternative to the hustle and bustle of the main Beach Road outside.

With easy access to beach massages and water scooters, I’m going back!

We stayed here for 4 nights mid November and were very glad we chose this resort.
I'm a bit puzzled by some of the negative reviews, our experience was all positive (but as Brian put it in the film of his life 'You're all individuals' .......and the crowd cried back in unison 'Yes, we're all individuals').
We were a party of 3 staying in 2 separate rooms, one of us (F) arrived a couple of days before the other two and was initially assigned a room close to the car park with a partial ocean view. A bit noisy with renovation close by so moved (without fuss) to building 3 top floor which was much better. The other two (M+F) were checked into building 2, very nice room.
Everything about this place was just as expected, beautifully tended grounds (biggest in the area), close enough to walk to restaurants and bars (or take one of a few transport options) yet in the quieter end of Chaweng, a nice beach accessed from the pool terrace area, small gym, activities on site. Breakfast, as mentioned below, was temporarily in one of the function rooms and was superb catering to international tastes. We did'nt have lunch or dinner in-house as we like to sample local restaurants instead. Hotel level pricing prevailed in the restaurants and bars just like everywhere else.
The key asset in my mind was the staff. Everyone we came across made us feel special and individual. Our housekeeper, Da, deserves special mention being particularly efficient and attentive.
This place is not cheap in comparison to others in the area (not the dearest either), but we considered it well worth it. It is an ideal place to chill out and relax for a few days, a great base to explore the island further if you wish.

Room Tip: All rooms are said to be ocean view, but like any hotel, ask to see the room first.
