“Crowded and needs improvement!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2012

We ( 2 adults and 2 kids) stayed at the Centara Grand Koh Samui for 3 nights. It was overly crowded even when i was told that it was low season in June. Some points to make"

1) Property and rooms: the hotel itself is grand and somewhat colonial. The rooms are ok ( we took the Premium Deluxe Room with a pool on the ground floor). We found the room somewhat dark ( even on broad daylight and with the lights on). Perhaps the tone of the lightings are not so conducive! But be informed; this particular room/s are exclusive and that means you don't get to see the beach or of any kind of view!! Should you want a view of the sea etc, get the rooms above ground level or the ones that have no blockage!

2) People and service: The service is not fantastic and generally you may have to speak slowly or repeat to get what you want as the staff don't speak good English ( that goes for the operator as well!).
However, there are 3 exceptional staff that i like to mention. The Club level was served by Mr Sommai and Ms Meena. These two are genuine and smile/serve from their bottom of their hearts!
They seem to be at the Club 24 hours! and smiled all day !!
The last is Mr Wat ( restaurant captain at Spicy Island and Hagi restaurants). We had dinner at both restaurants for two nights and he was there to welcome/direct and supervise throughout the entire dinner. He saw to every detail including playing traditional Japanese songs when we dined at Hagi , moving our table when we had the air-conditioning blowing direct at us/ tirelessly explained the menu and stood by ( physically) at our table while we dined! Our thanks to him for making our dining experience a memorable one! Centara should be fortunate to have people like Mr Sommai/Ms Meena and Mr Wat! They make up for what is overall lacking !!

3) Stray cats: Not that i don't love animals, but there are far too many all over the hotel. You can find them at the reception/breakfast hall/ all around the ground floor rooms entrances/ restaurants/beach etc. Perhaps something could have been done to minimize their presence!

4) Kids Club- needs genuine kids loving staff to manage the club. the person i met there was mechanical ( playing with a kid) and i did not for once see him smile. He gave me a " ask your kid to stay here" when i asked about the days activities!

If you are looking for some peace and quiet by the beach!! i suggest this is not the place ( by the way, the beach here is a public one. You will have to live with the ever annoying peddlers. If you are looking for a well located hotel near the shops/eateries etc ( just outside the hotel), then this is the place!!

Room Tip: I am assuming the higher floor rooms has less mosquitoes and a better view!!

We have just returned from 8 nights of fantastic service, attentive staff and an absolutely wonderful holiday. Any concern we had was dealt with promptly and without question, if anything they exceeded our requests. We could not recommend this hotel highly enough and congratulate the Centara Team for making our holiday so enjoyable.

We will write two reviews of the Centara Grand hotel. This review wriiten while sitting on the balcony of a room which looks over the entire gardens and sea and is just gorgeous to look at and be part of.
Having spent 3 days at the Royal Orchid Sheraton in Bangkok this is a welcome break from the hustle and bussel of such a big and vibrant city. The island is larger than I expected and while the airport is quite small it was very efficient at the same time as being personable. I don't recall seeing any customs there or many officials for that matter.
We booked an ocean view room with a double bed. On arrival the room given to us was indeed ocean facing but the bed consisted of two double beds pushed together. I had experienced this before and we were not prepared to accept it. They were very good and showed us to another room with a single king size bed but barely ocean facing and in the shadows balcony. Once again we resisted and didn't accept. They arranged for another room but we had to wait an hour which turned into two by the time we had explored the hotel. This isn't really a criticism as its our different interpretations of what was booked and what was expected I guess. The third room was just right and the view while im writing this is truly stunning.
In spite of what others say about the quality of rooms they are nice. Yes they could be modernised by changing the ceramic tiles on the bathroom floor and the walls which do date the rooms but get your head round that and its very good. Im not easily pleased either as you can see from the first paragraph.
The breakfast is good so far but not compared to the RoyaOrchid in Bangkok. I have a feeling it will get quite samish as is often the case but good nonetheless.
We are only on our third day but we can pass on some useful tips. Even if they give you a 50% discount in the hotel spa its still massively over priced even though it looks good and probably is. On the left side of the hotel beach (which is actually a puplic beach) there is massages for about 300 bart which is about £6 and lasts for over an hour. Its a brilliant massage and hardly worth bartering for at £6. There are other good looking parlors down the main street for much the same money. I just don't fancy having a massage in the window of the main street.
I would only change about £30_£50 to bart before you leave UK as you will get more for your money as soon as you arrive in Bangkok airport and at the rest of the official money changing kiosks everywhere. We took travelers checks as we felt it was safer and less expensive. It cost 30 to change a £100 travelers cheque which is less than a pound. Hotel exchange rate both here and Bangkok about 44to 1gbp. At the money exchanged we get nearly 49.
Twe are on a b&b basis and rightly so. The hotel meals are quiet expensive though I have no doubt the food would be good. The drinks are expensive compared to places outside. The 7/11 you can get a beer for about 30 bart where in the hotel its around 140. Same as the rest of the world I guess.
if like me you are prone to getting bitten then don't go buying expensive bite creams. The ones from home are pretty useless instead buy a bottle of tiger balm ointment and don't pay anymore than 100 bart for it. But rub a bit of that on a bite and just forget about it.

So far this is a great holiday. The hotel is great. The staff are great. Its very comfortable and has great beauty. We will update this when we return to the UK. Im only sat writing this because I got burnt yesterday in the 35c sunshine and think I need to recover. Definately recommended

Room Tip: Know what you want when you book. Then stick to your guns if you are not happy. I think you will reg...

We have just returned from 14 nights at the Centara Grand - we booked a pool suite and it was very spacious. The only complaint we had was we felt to pool should have been cleaned at least once or twice a week. Otherwise no complaints the lady who cleaned the room did a very good job and also when she came and did the turn down service.

When we checked in it was early and we were given a courtsey room to use until our room was ready this was a nice gesture and much appreciated. - Thank you.

Breakfast at the hotel was good and the was a good variety. When we were there the Samui Regatta was on and there were many people staying in the hotel but it never felt busy at breakfast.

The hotel had plenty of sunbeds and towels which is always a bonus. The spa was quite expensive but do check out the deals as they will do discounted prices at certain times of the day. if you do want a good massage go out of the hotel and across the road to My Friend it has good prices if you cannot get a deal in the hotel. I did however have a hot stone massage in the spa and it was superb.

We ate in the hotel every lunch time but went out in the evening - I do feel the hotel charges a lot for a glass of wine when you get about 3 glasses in the restaurants outside, but this is the norm really.

Overall we had a lovely stay and it really did recharge our batteries - now back in London and wish I was still there. Thank you for a very pleasant 14 nights and I would recommend this hotel to friends.

We travelled with Kuoni (who along with their local agent Asian Trails we cannot praise highly enough) and spent 3 nights in Bangkok at the Sheraton Royal Orchid and then transferred to Koh Samui. It was our second time on the island, previously staying at the Imperial. The Centara is right in the centre of Chewang's shops and restaurants so you can walk out of the peaceful hotel and immediately be in the midst of the action whereas the Imperial was a few miles away and required a taxi or courtesy bus to get into the main street. The room was pretty basic, but adequate, with lovely views of the sea, and the grounds were immaculate. The best views were certainly from the second and third floors. Food and drink was very expensive in the hotel but, as mentioned, you could go outside and buy drinks at a fraction of the cost. The beach was very clean and the water very clear and safe with no jellyfish like in Bo Phut. You could walk out a long way and still only be knee deep. The regatta was being held whilst we were there and this centred in the hotel so it may have been a bit busier than normal. We were on a bed and breakfast basis and the breakfasts were superb - there was so much choice it was difficult to pick. And the staff in the restaurant were very friendly and helpful. Bottles of water were provided every day. Negatives - We accepted the normal book-in time was 14.00 and were prepared to wait until then but at 14.00 it was 'another 20' minutes, then 'another 20 minutes' until we spent nearly 2 hours waiting for our room. It was quite a large hotel so could be very impersonal. The beds were very hard and we had difficulty sleeping for the first few nights. The usual Thai greetings were not used, just 'Good Morning' 'Thank You' etc and we felt that this was a shame as the traditional greetings had previously added to the overall Thai experience. In honesty, if we went back to Koh Samui we would probably return to the Imperial before the Centara as we enjoy the smaller, more intimate hotel, and that is our personal choice not a major criticism of the Centara.

Room Tip: Upper floors have the best views though all appear to have sea views.

The Centara Grand is a beautiful hotel with excellent attentive staff. The facilities were magnificent. The location is great, sitting right on the beach to the back and the bustling night lift at the front. The beach is gorgeous and the water is crystal clear.
The only downside to the hotel was the Wi-Fi, its not free which is a bit of a surprise for such a big hotel.

If you fancy getting out of your comfort zone for a few hours take a Tuk Tuk or taxi along to Sports Pro Muay Thai (5minutes away). For 400 Bhatt you get 2 hours of guidance and training from Muay Thai fighters. You even get to participate with all the fighters. Great experience and it’s a good way to work off those extra pounds usually gained on holiday. It caters for the beginners.
