Reviewed 7 September 2012 via mobile

We are currently on our last day here at Centara Grand. It is overcast and raining (1st time it has rained all week but 4/7 no sun, very humid though) so I decided to write my review on our free wireless on the room.

I'll try and remain un-biased as from day 2 all 10 of our party, including our small children, have had sickness and diarrhoea. This has lasted all week so we have not enjoyed the holiday at all. Saying this, I'm not convinced it is something we ate at the hotel, more of a bug that is maybe going around it.

The hotel is visibly very clean (although it has gone 4:30pm and our room has still not been made which isn't great when you have a poorly child and need clean towels).

Our room is really great. We chose the one bedroom suite so our daughter could sleep in another room from us and it is huge! Although because she has been so poorly she has slept in with us so a bit of a shame. The decor is very smart / clean / dark woods / flat screen tv's etc. Bathroom large although no lock on sliding doors and glass doors for toilet and shower if you're sharing with anyone other than a spouse it might be awkward.

Food - well can't really comment as we've barely eaten all week but what we have had has been ok. Although my family had v poor service one night when I was not there and they were the only ones in the restaurant (maybe because everyone is ill!). We did eat on the 1st night at an amazing restaurant called Zazen on the other side of the island - expensive but well worth it for a wonderful setting and evening. The Club room has been nice as we have missed breakfast most days so have caught free snacks that run most of the time. Unfortunately we haven't been able to make use of the free cocktails.

pool - nice enough with cute swim-up bar.

Kids club room - bit disappointing as I chose the hotel because of the great reviews. A room full of Lego and kids 'things' but lacks any character and does not make you want to play with your little one for longer than 10 minutes in there. It is air conditioned which was good but more like a concrete box with toys in.

Location - well, I'd never been to Koh Samui and not sure what I expected. Yes it's in the middle of all the hustle and bustle on the main road with all the massage places, restaurants (half of them look really grotty), a few little shops in between all the bags / hats / tshirt market stalls. I didn't feel particularly safe when walking by myself and had to really pick and choose where to get a cold drink from.

Staff - all very polite.

All in all I think we would've preferred to spend more to stay at a proper 5* instead of a 4*.

Recently spent 5 nights here on a B&B basis as part of a mini Asia tour.
As per previous comments the room we were allocated was perfectly adequate but was in need of updating. We paid for a sea view room but from our balcony the view was actually tops of trees with a bit of blue in amongst.
The complex position is wonderful flowing down to and incorporating part of the beach yet is peaceful not crowded or noisy.
Plenty going on for our 19 year old daughter playing water volleyball etc etc daily.
My wife and daughter would walk along the beach (to the south away from Chaweng) and have massages whilst I had a beer (99 baht 660ml Chang) listening to music next to the Reggae bar and swiming in the warm sea.
Can't fault the resort or its position.

Room Tip: There is a 7/11 supermarket opposite the main gate that guests purchased drinks and took back into t...

Blue skies and hot sunshine greeted us as we landed in Samui and the welcome from the hotel was as warm. We were checked in and taken to our room 711. The porter was extremely helpful as I had locked my keys in my case!!! Our room was pleasant with a lovely big balcony looking through the beautifully kept gardens to the sea. The location couldnt have been better right on the beach, the sea shallow and warm. Breakfast was excellent with attentive service from staff.
We really enjoyed the cocktail party on the beach hosted by the management team and we meet the heads of departments and really enjoyed speaking to them. When in conversation with the head of housekeeping she really wanted to know if the hotel could do anything for us and if we could make any comments about improving our stay. We felt these people really wanted our stay to be fantastic (and it was). Along beach road there are super places to eat ....the quality of the food was fabulous , in two weeks we never had a meal we didnt enjoy, and we were introduced to Mangosteens ( a fruit) ....little drops of heaven. We will definately go back to this hotel well done to all at Centara.

Room Tip: Take the trucks instead of taxis they are cheaper and much more fun. Agree the price first.

we have been here before, 7 years ago. We liked it the first time but did worry that the rooms may not have been updated.
Surprisingly some had still not been updated, and they needed it 7 years ago!!
However, I made it clear on check in that I was not expecting to be shown to a room yet to be 'done up' and we were given a lovely room on the second floor (tip, stay away from ground floor rooms, you will be eaten alive my the mosies).
Great hotel actually, with access straight onto Chaweng Road, but with none of the noise.
Beach is fine if a little busy, and sea nice to swim in.
Overall we loved it.

Room Tip: second floor and above. Ask for renovated rooms only

We spent an excellent 12 nights at the Centara staying in Block 1 on the top floor. Great view of the gardens, pool, beach and sea with a fantastic sunrise straight out to sea. The hotel is built in a string of 8 Blocks with block 7 being nearest the road, although this did not seem to be a problem.

Our room was a king sized double and was very comfortable and kept clean by an attentive house keeping service who seemed to be working very long hours. The room size was average but quite adequate with reasonable storage and a good wardrobe and room safe. Tea/ coffee and drinks were available ( better to buy your own drinks outside at the supermarket as the fridge is big enough and not "electronically tagged"). You are provided with slippers and other nice touches and the bathroom is a good size with a separate shower cubicle, bath and washing facilities. Staying for 12 nights you get to know a room quite well and I found it comfortable and fine. The TV even had the Premier League football games live!

The hotel was booked on a B&B basis as the Half Board option was more expensive than seemed reasonable. Eating in the Hotel was quite costly and was about 3 to 4 times more than across the street in the numerous restaurants available. The hotel had themed nights for eating which were popular and we used them but our party was 7 in total and that was a cost unless you are starving and eat your fill. Night time entertainment is limited and because of the board basis most guests seem to eat out and stay out in the evening, so you can find yourself in a very lovey, bright, clean and delightful but very empty hotel lobby, bar or restaurant.

The Beach road right outside the hotel has the usual mix of shops - souvenirs, food, pharmacy, bars, tattoo parlours, massage parlours (real and make believe!), stall and markets. Cheap stuff and knock offs abound, always with a bargaining edge. They love fireworks and let them off at various times late a night, after a couple of days I slept right through all of it. Keep your money safe and carry small denominations for buying. I never use a credit card in this type of environment as many years ago I did so in the Dominican Republic and later found out that I had bought some enterprising shop keeper a speed boat! Chaweng Beach is very popular and built for tourists day or nights so enjoy it for what it is and remember the locals need you and your money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor they have the best views, most non smoking and have an evening warm...

Overall we had a great time and think that if you read all the comments on this site, they reflect a fair summary. Location, beach and pool is great. We stayed in block 8, room 812. Nice and quiet which is why we didn't ask to be moved, however it was not a sea view. It faced the sea and you could glimpse the sea through the trees, but not a sea view. The outlook on to the well kept gardens was fine though. The room was a bit dated and tiered and really needs a refit - however in the scheme of things it was okay. Air con was excellent. Breakfast was good with plenty of variety.

A great location and a wonderful hotel. The service was excellent and the staff really friendly. I was a little surprised that the kids club was more a number (4) of daily activities rather than a club but that said there was more than enough for my 10&8 year old to do; table tennis, badminton, water basketball, volleyball were all available. The beach was lovely and there was some snorkelling at each end with fish and coral ( just don't expect barrier reef Quality!). Had a couple of suits made by Mr Joseph just over the road. Paid £80 each for the best material. Needed to haggle a bit and £18 for an extra pair of trousers.

Hotel food quality really good with the Italian night being superb. Make use of the bars happy hours (2 hours!) which makes the hotel price reasonable.
