This resort was great for kids - the pool and beach area, as well as the restaurants, ice cream shop etc were just what our kids wanted. We stayed in a one bed suite it was all new and fabulous. The food was great. We didn't really need to leave the resort. The kids club was non existent however - dont bother.

Stayed there in April. Wonderful place right on the Beach. Very attentive staff especially Por and Tuan in Spice Island. Certainly going back next year. Also special mention of the band called Traffic Jam and the lovely lady singer who went out of her way to speak to all the guests watching them perform. Great band, hope they are there next year when I return. Only disappointment was could not get late checkout even though we had been inconvenienced when our bathroom flooded as the shower got blocked and our room was not being serviced sometimes as late as between 3 to 4 pm. That was inconvenient

Dear Jeanette M,

Thank you for kind comments on our staff, Por and Tuan. We’ll make sure that your remarks are passed to them.
We’re happy also that you liked the Traffic Jam band. They really are good at entertaining and meeting with the guests who watch their shows. We’re quite fond of them all.
Please accept our sincere apologies for not being able to accommodate your late check-out request due to high occupancy.
We’ll do our best to provide you with a better, more comfortable stay should you return to us next year.
By the way –Traffic Jam should be with us if you come back during the same period.
Thank you again for the support and loyalty.

Kind regards,
Joe

We spent a week at Centara Grand and had a very pleasant and relaxing stay. It is a very large hotel and its greatest assets are its huge and beautifully maintained gardens, extensive beachfront and numerous swimming pools. It is set well back from the (rather noisy) street and is very quiet and peaceful. The hotel is designed so that all rooms face the sea, although obviously the views are better from the higher floors.
The rooms themselves are comfortable and quite well-appointed but are a bit staid and 'tired' - eg heavy-ish furniture and good quality curtains that very effectively keep out the morning sun, but in a pattern and fabric that might be more suited to a hotel in the English country-side rather than the beach. The hotel was apparently renovated a few years ago but the rooms really could do with a further freshen-up. At any rate, that's a minor quibble. Our room was kept very clean and the housekeeping service could not be faulted.
The hotel has a great buffet breakfast and numerous restaurants if you don't wish to go out for every meal. We upgraded to the Club, where we received wonderful personalised service from the staff, especially Meena and Lar. They could not have been more delightful and attentive.
The Centara is a good option for families because of the numerous amenities and we also met a number of people who come back every year, which is certainly a good recommendation. Don't stay here if you are looking for a bungalow-type experience. This definitely a hotel and with that comes the sort of service you would expect - room service, nightly turn-down, pillow 'menu' etc. It offers a comfortable stay in hotel-like surroundings but with a fabulous garden/pool/beach environment that other Chaweng properties cannot match.

Dear Darlene1953,

Thank you for sharing your review. We’re glad to hear you had a pleasant and relaxing stay.

In fact, we never tire of hearing guests tell us of the great care they receive in The Club. It really is full credit to the team up there as they take ownership of the venue and really give it their all. We’re happy to once again post a positive review on the board for all their colleagues to see and we thank you for the encouraging comments.

Interestingly enough the fabric used for the curtains in our guest rooms is from Jim Thompson, one of Thailand’s preeminent design companies.

Thank you again for your descriptive review. You do a kind service for other Trip Advisor readers when you describe our hotel as you do. It’s very helpful for travelers to form their expectations by researching reviews like yours.

Best regards,

Joe

We have just had a great family holiday at Centara Grand in Koh Samui.

This was our 5th trip to Samui and the group decided to stay at Centara Grand.

We had a large family group and stayed for over 2 weeks.

Overall it was a great venue, perfect pool amenities, rooms nice and great staff.
We do have a few suggestions to make the hotel experience even better:

- please please please update the music in the pool bar - each day the staff played the same music again and again and some of the sound tracks were very inappropriate including a few really offensive songs not suitable for some of the kids ordering mocktails from the Sip and Dip

- staff in bars need a bit more training and possibly a little more attention to details. Beverages and food were forgotten and overall it felt like many of the staff members had little idea of what to do.

- more air cond or more fans would be wonderful in the main breakfast area - a few times the room was so hot we had to leave breakfast without finishing our meal (outside area was also really boiling and there were quite a lot of flies). We really recommend heading to the overflow breakfast area near the waterfront - less options for breakfast however beautiful breeze and less crowded.

Overall we loved the resort staff, rooms and overall Centara experience and we will return and would recommend the venue for families and groups.

Special mention to the room attendants who were beautiful and serviced our rooms twice daily - which was wonderful and a lovely surprise after dinner to have your bed pulled down and room re-tidied before bedtime.

Dear AussieScuba,

Thank you for sharing your review with the readers of Trip Advisor. We are so pleased that your group had a fantastic holiday with us.
We appreciate the helpful suggestions you offered and we’ll definitely review the music played in Dip n’ Sip straight away.
It was kind of you to mention the room attendants. They are among our unsung heroes and they do a great job.
We’re thankful for your recommendation and we do hope that we’ll have the pleasure of welcoming your family back again.

We wonder based on your profile name whether you might be interested in diving on your next visit. We’ve got a great partner in 100 Degrees East who can show you some of the best dive spots near Samui. It’s definitely worth contacting them if you’d like to see what’s under the sea.

Joe

We only stayed here for one night during April 2014 to be close to Samui airport for our departure the following day. Having been in an amazing hotel with our own huge private pool on Koh Phangan we decided to continue the theme and book one of the private pool villa type rooms here. Unfortunately it could not have been more different! The pool itself is really only the same size as two bath rubs end to end and about 2.5/3 wide i.e. it is pretty tiny. The other very odd thing about the design is that each pool villa is behind a solid concrete wall, obviously this wall has the front door in it and so when this is closed the only way of really getting any sun or light in is through two shutters in the wall. My mother in law who was with us (in a standard room which had a far better sea view from its balcony!) likened it to being in a stable…. Which sort of says it all.

The room itself was fine and a decent size, the bathroom is also large which was nice but we found it a little odd that the wardrobes for your clothes is also in here and so for a prolonged stay they would constantly be absorbing steam from the shower and getting damp… which may in part explain the damp smell in the room throughout our stay.

The hotel grounds however are well kept and the beach is gorgeous so we can’t fault these at all. There are many bars and restaurants in the hotel as well as organised sports and kids’ activities so it is a great family hotel it would seem. The usual tricks do apply here however; e.g. the ‘two for one’ cocktails during the many happy hours are a bit of a myth, they struck as very much as ‘virgin cocktails’ so watch the staff carefully. That said the staff are lovely and quick to respond so it is unfair to blame them for working to the instructions of those holding the purse strings.

My wife and I didn’t have breakfast but my mother in law had and reported that it is lovely and having been here a few years ago we can also confirm that the setting is beautiful. The checkout procedure was easy enough and so this was all fine.

The only negatives are that the reception areas could use some redecoration and a little more training for the staff, when we arrived they asked us for a second copy of our hotel voucher (the first was water damaged) and so we asked for the Wi-Fi code so we could download it from our email account… the staff then told us ‘no, Wi-Fi is only available for checked in guests’ which led to a bizarre conversation over the fact we needed it to allow us to check in but weren’t allowed it because we weren’t! Fortunately a second member of staff eventually put two and two together and we were checked in!

Room Tip: Don't bother with the private pool villas

Dear DAAD78,

Thank you for offering your review after your recent stay. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the grounds and the beach.

We think you’re mother-in-law has an interesting sense of humor. That said, one man’s stable is another man’s sanctuary. The pool suites are amazingly popular and many guests open the shutters and spend most of the day tucked away lounging in the pool.

Your comment –‘The usual tricks apply’ also caught our attention. As it happens, the only instructions the staff are given with regards to mixing cocktails is for them to adhere to a recipe standard of 1 ½ Oz. pour.

Your account of the WiFi discussion is an eye-opener and clearly useful to us as an area for improvement. Please accept our apologies for involving you in our Abbott & Costello routine!

Thank you again for your constructive review. We hope to welcome your family again back again soon.

Kind regards,

Joe

We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions and keep coming back because of the fantastic location and the wonderful staff. This time we stayed in a one bedroom suite on the second level at the left hand end of the hotel complex when facing the beach. It was the same room as we had a year ago, spacious with a big outside deck and great views, perfect, other than its decor is looking a bit tired and the air conditioning struggled to keep it at a comfortable temperature. (We have stayed in rooms on the right hand side and these seemed to have better air conditioning). We did complain about the air conditioning and after some attention by an engineer, as long as we left it on high with the curtains pulled all day, it was bearable. On our last day we were delivered a complimentary bottle of wine and plate of hors d'oeuvres from the hotel management with a note apologising for the problems with the air conditioner, a nice touch.

We purchased the Club access package and it was well worth the extra cost. The staff working in the club were exceptional. Two, Meena and Lar, treated us like family remembering what we liked for breakfast or for evening cocktails and bring it to us without being asked as soon as we arrived.

Room Tip: Our experience is that second or first floor rooms are cooler as are rooms in the right hand wing (w...

I have been this hotel 4 times now, firswt time was in 99 and the last time was in 2012, abit late writing a review. it has everrything you need a lovely swimming pool steps away from the fabulous chaweng beach, ou can stay and eat at the hotel if you wish, or step outside and experience the life of samui first hand. i love the swim up bar, i also love the sea breeze bar where you can have lunch or simply sit at the bar or table and have a drink looking out at sea and watch the world go by. it also has plenty of sporting activities daily, water arobics, or at 1.30 everyday they play water vollyball in the pool which is great for the guests and a great way to meet people from all over the world. My wife had a spa and she said it was lovley i went to the bar haha, also the breakfast is lovely and you have a great selction of hot or cold food, and the chef will cook you any omelette or eggs you need, the staff are friendly and helpful they will tend to your every need. I cant wait to eventually return to this place.

Dear Obimick,

Well, better late than never! Thank you for sharing your review.

Having been here a handful of times you have been privy to the maturation of the property and you know it/us well.

You mentioned going to the swim-up bar while your wife enjoyed a treatment at the spa. That’s a scenario we love to hear…something for every guest and every guest relaxing with their favorite option. Good for you both!

Obimick, it’s been a while. When are you coming back to your Home away from Home?

We hope to welcome you again soon!
