Left the resort yesterday after 7 nights. Cannot fault, the room was clean and large, pool and grounds excellent, food above average and friendly helpful staff. Toilet broke one morning and was fixed in 30 minutes. Also, suffered a nasty cut during a island boat trip and when I returned was treated and bandaged by helpful staff. The beach is dirty and a pity that the hotels didn't band together and clean it up. Such a beautiful beach with bottles, old nappies and plastic bags lying around. Thank heavens the pool was good.
Part of the complex carries along the street and you will find a Deli which makes the best coffees in town. Was great to find as miss my flat whites when away. Nee is the lady that makes the best but you will have to ask for a double shot latte to get the great tasting flat white. Thanks Nee!

Dear BobbyGoldCoast12,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review here on Trip Advisor. We’re glad to hear that our staff were able to assist with your cut.

With regards to the beach we think perhaps you are referring to the public access section of the beach a few hundred meters down from us. Unfortunately, you are correct. That area is the frontage of a derelict resort and sometimes (particularly weekends) rubbish is left behind by locals having a ‘day at the beach’.Having said that, we (Centara) organize a weekly deep clean of the beach and totally agree that more coordination from all Chaweng hotels would be beneficial.

Thank you for the kind words for Nee and the girls in The Deli. They do a magnificent job with their coffee creations…not to mention the made-to-order sandwiches and yummy cakes!

Thanks again for your useful feedback. We do hope you’ll return for your flat whites and to see an immaculate Chaweng beach.

Kind regards,

Joe Clasby

Wonderful and everything done skillfully”

(19 March) Linda and I stowed our snow skis, packed our bags and drove to SF for a late dinner at La Collina before boarding the airplane at SFO-TPE-BKK and then Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui. We were met outside the baggage claim area by Golf and Linda was at ease knowing we were in the safe hands of the Grand Centara and Golf.

There are many places on Samui and throughout Thailand that provide สัปปายะ Sappàya but if I can have only one such experience than the tropical beach, facility and staff of the Grand Centara remains at the top of the list. If given more than one such experience, then such experiences must begin at the Grand Centara where we can relax and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings and the loving kindness of the Thai people.
I rise early to watch the sun rise and meet the Thais with อรุณสวัสดิ์ à run sà wàt, sitting on the beach under the stars อานาปานสติ breathing with eyes closed and sensing the wonderful smells of the garden behind me, listening and feeling the breeze and lulled by the sound of the waves which beckon that first swim as the sun begins to lift above the horizon.
That first breakfast with Linda eaten under the Plumeria trees where the fragrant flowers fall with music playing softly, and the Thai girls working diligently and เก่งที่สุดเลย skillfully to make the moment a beautiful experience. They always succeed.
The remainder of the day is spent swimming in the pools or bay, walking in the gardens in search of new flowers and other living things, listening to the chatter of the guests and staff, reading and studying about the Thai language and culture and simply immersing ourselves into the surrounding beauty.

Dinner followed by dancing under the stars and Plumeria trees. The variety of special dinners and entertainment contribute to the uniqueness of each evening…again overwhelmed by the colors, sounds, smells. Linda and I talked of family often and especially her father…one special evening when Lek was singing “New York, New York” in the lobby of the Centara, Linda’s father’s favorite Frank Sinatra song, we were in the Sala alone and Linda said “Dad is with us now”. It is often like that when surrounded by beauty, that sensation of others now long gone ‘joining’ us for a few moments.

Leaving, always difficult, but we never really leave the Grand Centara and the people that work there and live nearby. Some things linger forever.

Dear RANGERConners,

On behalf of all of us here, we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your review. Your love for Thailand and the Thai people really shines through your words. We start to wonder amongst ourselves here when you will finally make the move back to Thailand permanently.
We really do appreciate that you put together such a warm and stirring post.
It’s obvious that you and your wife are truly happy when you on holiday here. We gather that that is down to our location, staff and the fact that you’re both just generally happy people. Still, it warms our hearts to read your kind remarks.

We wish you all the best up there in the mountains…until we meet again.

Sincerely,

Joe (and the Whole Team)

So often returning to the same hotel can be a major anti-climax. Not so at this Centara Grand Resort in Chaweng. My wife and I felt a great excitement returning for a much needed holiday. As a returning guest, the staff make you so welcome, without being OTT.

The gardens and beach, where you spend most of your time, are quite spectacular and we have found it impossible to beat. It is not a highly 'corporate' luxury hotel. It is grand in a wonderfully informal, relaxed, easy and honest style. There is easily enough space for everyone and finding a sunbed was never a problem in the huge gardens or on the beach. Easy days reading, swimming when you are getting too hot and we enjoyed the air-conditioned gym at lunchtime when it was particularly quiet. A great time to escape the hottest part of the day.
For the 'aspiring to be supple', there are excellent and very professionally led YOGA sessions in the gardens first thing in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Watching the sunset at 6.30/7.00pm from the balcony where the WiFi still worked really well, with a cool malt whisky is just exquisite !

For anyone who hasn't been to Koh Samui, this hotel is on the best part of Chaweng beach. Soft sand, not too busy, yet at night, if you walk out the front of the hotel there's a huge choice of restaurants, bars etc all an easy walk away.Evening meals at the hotel's Sea Breeze restaurant, slightly elevated above the beach and under a big silvery moon are quite magical. We were lucky enough to have a rare and beautiful 'red moon' one night !

I couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough and we enthusiastically booked our holiday for next year when we left. We have stayed at many other good hotels in Samui but the Centara Grand in Chaweng has the all round edge which makes it hard to beat. There is no other hotel in the world that we have returned to so often. It's location, facilities, friendliness and genuine concern that the guests are have a good time does encourage a huge number of returning guests !

Dear Mr. Diaman43,

Thank you for taking the time to write / share such a wonderfully descriptive review! We’re so pleased to hear that the Centara experience never gets old.

You’ve clearly been with us enough times to know how to get the most out of your days. Just the right combination of exercise and relaxation–and of course sitting on the balcony, beginning the evening with a cool malt whisky is also sound advice.

That magical red moon you saw is undeniably a rare treat. It does sometimes appear the evening after a full moon. It really is striking when it rises out of the sea!

Thanks for the plug for the gym and yoga classes. You know you’ve got a standing invitation-maybe next visit!

We very much appreciate your strong recommendation. Coming from a seasoned world traveler that counts as very high praise indeed!

Thanks again for choosing Centara and sharing your review. We hope that it won’t be too long before you return.

Who knows, perhaps we’ll share another red moon!

Warm regards,

Joe

We were recommended to stay here by friends that have been before and said that it was a great resort for kids and had a fabulous kids club. We stayed for 10 nights in April and found the experience to be hit and miss.

Check-in was chaotic and we were forgotten about for over an hour. No big smiles or welcomes like we have had in other Thai resorts. We found the same at check-out.

We had booked two interconnecting pool view rooms and were told that they had changed us to a pool suite room, but for 4 nights and would have to shift back to what we had booked after. I would have preferred to have not had to shift during our stay but we were told that the rooms we had booked were not available due to a wedding that had 80 guests and that we could have what we booked after the 4 days.

The pool suite was lovely though and great for the kids to have a dip after dinner. It does attract the mozzies so I was happy to change back after the 4 days. Both room types were fabulous and cleaning staff are to be commended. If we wanted more towels, not a problem and you can ask to have the room sprayed for the mozzies at any time. I would have liked to have had the Harnn beauty products that we had in the pool suite continue to the other room. They were fabulous!

We did take advantage of the baht bonanza which is great if you eat and drink at the hotel. At no time were we advised of the Club facilities which is a shame as apparently we were entitled to those while in the Pool Suite. Restaurants at the hotel are fabulous though and so is the breakfast that we had daily. Go early though to avoid the crowds and there is a better range in the main restaurant rather than eating closer to the beach.

We were invited to the Managers drinks one night which was a lovely touch and was great to chat to other people in the resort.

The location of the resort is just perfect and the beach in front is beautiful and swimmable. We always managed to find lounges by the pool but noted that many had been reserved with towels on them well before breakfast. We were able to book a paddleboard as well which the kids loved. The pool bar is lovely but happy hour turns into chaos with staff having difficulty getting drinks out. Waiting 15 minutes for a beer is pretty average when the fridge is just right underneath.

Our main issue was with the kids club, which is the reason why we booked the resort in the first place. Some times kids were supervised, sometimes they weren't and were just monitored by the man that runs the gym. I was told by a staff member that they can't retain staff at the kids club which is a shame as there is huge potential for it to be a success. I suggested pool games - like the volley ball match which the kids would have loved to play in the pool daily, but couldn't as it was adults only and super competitive. Bizarre. There were plenty of families we met who said the same thing.

We will definitely return to Samui and would possibly stay at the Centara Grand again if we heard that service had improved in some areas. Given the price we paid I expected better and maybe Management should take a look at how other large resorts are run. The kids club and service at the Golden Sands in Penang would be a great place to start.

Dear Rebeccadrew,

Thank you for sharing your comprehensive review. Clearly there were some instances where your experience did not meet your expectations and we apologize for that.

In any case, we are glad that your family enjoyed the upgrade to pool suite.

Thank you also for the ‘thumbs up’ on Harnn products. You’re right. They are fabulous.

With regards to the Kid’s Club we did notice that your younger daughter joined the activities each day, made lots of friends and really enjoyed herself. On the occasions when you or your husband came to check on her she asked to stay with her friends in the club and you / your husband were assured by the staff present that they were in good hands. Still, we agree that there is room for improvement and we’ve brought in additional staff and activities since your visit.

I would like to make something clear for Trip Advisor readers regarding the pool games. Children are free to play pool games or water volleyball most of the day if they wish. In fact, you may note other contributors on this forum commenting about the number of children playing in the pool. Consequently, there is an hour or so each afternoon when we provide an organized match. As you note it is competitive and thus to preserve the level of play (and maintain safety) this match is kept as ‘adults only’. Most guests appreciate this; especially during school holidays.

Absolutely agree with your comment on service at Dip n’ Sip. If it truly is taking 15 minutes to get a cold beer in that is a travesty and we must do better.

We thank you for your advice and your candor. We do hope that if you return to Samui we’ll have the pleasure of welcoming you back again.
Best regards,

Joe
