“Absolutely fantastic!”
Reviewed 18 October 2009

My husband and I stayed here for 10 nights half board for our honeymoon and couldn't have picked a more perfect place. From the private transfer from the airport on arrival, to the superb quality food, welcoming and helpful staff to the 5* room, we couldn't fault anything. We upgraded our room to one with a private pool (highly recommended) and were able to relax and enjoy ourselves by the pool, on the gorgeous white sandy beach which was a 1 minute walk away or on the various trips independantly booked from the hotel. Food and drink was more expensive than the restaurants and bars in the main street but what do expect if you go to a 5* hotel? The shops and bars were close enough to go out at night and experience the island although Chawang town itself was very commercialised and the numerous tailor's would do anything to make you stop and talk to them (pretend you are Polish/Eastern European if you don't want to keep stopping as they don't know what to say to that).

Back to the hotel though and we would highly recommend the hotel for couples as there was lots to do if you wanted it but if not the pool, jacuzzi, beach and local massage facilities could keep you going. There are facilities for kids but it did seem more orientated towards couples. The island is pretty small and with the various trips we did to see it, we would try somewhere else in Thailand but would certainly stay at the chain again as it was amazing.

If you go, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

This hotel was amazing. The pictures really do show the real thing. My partner and I arrived after 20 hours of travelling, at 930 am, and headed straight in. At reception they told us that we'd have to wait till 2 to check in, which we expected so I told them that was fine. We were given a drink and a cold towel, then we were told thy there were suites available now, if we upgraded we could check in now. I said that I was fine to wait, so the receptionist went about her bussiness. 2 minutes later, somewhat miraculously, our room was ready, and we checked in at 940, at no extra cost. The room was beautiful, overlooking the garden, pool, and the sea. Very close to reception. Huge bed (2 doubles together), big shower with the shower head in the ceiling, genrally very nice. We headed down for some dinner on the first night, only to be told it was fine dining only, and after looking at the menu, realised the 2 of us wouldn't be able to eat for less than £20 each (for a main course), plus drinks (£6 for 2 coffees!). The hotel is lovely, the staff are very helpful, the rooms and beach are top class. Just don't expect to eat and drink around the hotel, unless you have a shed-load of spending money. I highly recommend the Deli on the hotels parade of shops. Lovely sandwiches, that can be charged to your room. Beware the security deposit that Thomas Cooke didn't tell us about (£100 each, but you get it back at the end of the holiday).

My wife and I stayed at the Centara Grand Beach Resort for one week in March and have to say that we enjoyed every single minute of it!

Check In and Arrival

We found the check in pretty painless. We were sat in reception and brought cool drinks and a refreshing towel which were certainly welcome, given the heat and our trip to the hotel. Soon, we were taken up to our room. As it was our honeymoon, there were orchids on the bed, a cake and a bottle of wine. All very much appreciated.

Our room
We were staying in a Superior Ocean View. Though the view was a little obscured by the palm trees around the pool this did not in any way cause any problem, we still had a good view of the pool. The room looked like it had been recently renovated, and was in very good condition, with everything that we needed for our stay

The resort
As the name suggests, you are right on the beach. Though not private, we never found a problem with overcrowding or being able to use a sunlounger. The beach is breathtaking and everyday we spent gazing towards the horizon pinching ourselves. Similarly there are three interconnecting pools, which every afternoon water volleyball is played, which can quite competitive!!
As it was our honeymoon, we treated ourselves to a few treatments in the spa and though a little more expensive than these would be outside the resort, we enjoyed them very much and would recommend them if your budget allows.

Food & Drink
There are three restaurants at the resort, Palm Grove, Spice Island and Hagi. We ate at Spice Island twice and it worked out at about £40 for a two course Thai meal with three drinks each and then on the second occasion it was a Thai banquet, where you went and helped yourself to freshly prepared meals, buffet style. Was about £15 each. Quite reasonable on both occasions I thought for a brilliant authentic Thai meal served right next to the breathtakign beach. There are resgular theme nights, on one such occasion a beach BBQ, again buffet style with a fantastic range of meats, fish and salads for about £20 each.
Palm Grove is where we ate our included breakfast every morning, thoughwe never ate there at night, the breakfast was plentiful and varied, and for a complete carnivore like me a relevation to be eating steak at breakfast!!
Piccolo Snack Shop was where we ate lunch most days. Their toasted baquettes are delicious and the ladies in there so friendly and remembered our order everyday

Location
The resort is located on Chaweng Beach and as such just outside the gates of the resort, you will find the other end of the scale and the real Thailand. You could easily be cocooned in the resort for two weeks but we wanted to explore and have other options outside of the resort. Here you will find the traffic, hustle and bustle, a multitude of shops selling everything and a fantastic range of restaurants and bars. We would recommend Zicos, right across from the hotel and Coyotes. Both of them good nights, particularly Zicos which has two for one Happy Hours on cocktails and is an unlimited meat feast!! There are plenty of restaurants to choose from so go and see what you think. You can walk the length of the road in 10-15 minutes, though if you need to, there are 4x4s with seats in the back, which drive along the road, all you do is flag one down. Once on board and as you near your destination, press the buzzer inside the back of the truck and the driver stops. Costs roughtly 50 - 100 baht. There are taxis as well, never too expensive.

Other activities
We went on a full day speedboatd trip organised through the Kuoni rep. This was brilliant and highly recommended. Was a full tour of the Angthong Marine Park and took us snorkelling, kayaking and lunch at a traditional Thai fisherman's village. All excellent, and even better as it was my birthday! There are plenty of other tours you could look into, and there are so many tour organisers to choose from you will be completely spoilt for choice.

Weather
The weather was excellent while we were there, a high 32c everyday, brilliant sunshine. Though if unfamiliar with SE Asia weather you will find that at roughly 4pm black clouds will appear from nowhere, it would start raining really heavily for maybe half an hour and then stop, and back to brilliant sunshine. Whilst raining, we retreated to Piccolos for our daily sandwich and ice cream.

One minor grumble would be that there was no entertainment in the hotel at night, so we generally headed onto Chaweng Beach road. Also on the road avoid English salespeople as it is a scam. Our artists were two girls on a moped who told us that "unbelieveably" we had won a star prize, of a laptop or a dream holiday. All we had to do was go and sit in a hotel for an hour nd we could claim our prize. Speaking with other tourists they had won the same prize and all they won was a T Shirt. It's a scam. We craftily agreed to meet them and then we stood them up but not arriving!!

We would definitely go back here. It was perfect, couldn't fault the staff or facilities. Highly recommended

Well I can only say that we loved the Centara, before arrival I requested a room close to the pools as this was the relaxing part of the holiday and I had read how large the resort was.

On arrival we were welcomed with a cold drink and lovely cooling chilled towel which after 22 hours of travel was heaven! We checked in quickly and then were shown to our room, I think this was in one of the best locations as it was on the third floor, quite set back from the road so we weren’t disturbed but close to the pools and had a great view of the sea and the beautiful gardens and fountain.

The room looked to have been decorated recently and was all clean and of good quality, our bed was about 8 feet wide and although firm it was comfortable. the hotel offered clean sheets everyday (or you use a leaflet on the bed for the eco option of every couple of days) and the daily turndown was really nice with orchids left on the bed and the mosquito machine being turned on.

The bathroom had no bath and was shower only but this suited us, it was a double size shower with movable spray head and a rain shower head in the ceiling. The bathroom was an odd mix with modern glass and marble but still had those yellow tiles other have mentioned – bit strange but clean and functional all the same.

Outside of the room the hotel is gorgeous, the reception/lobby area is open on two sides and gets a breeze running through, it has some nice places to sit and access to the Islander Bar which has a happy hour from 6-8pm every night. The pools are really nice, there are three sections one with the elephant water spouts, one where they play water volley ball and one freeform with the dip and sip pool bar. There are lots of loungers and the staff will move these about if you want to be in shade or on the beach.

Talking about the beach it was really superb, fine white sand and the sea was warm and clear, there are a few jet ski operators in the area so there is a marked out safe swimming zone right outside the hotel, it was my dream beach and we swam most days.

The hotel is located within an easy walk of so many restaurants, we loved the Andaman seafood restaurant closest to the hotel on the beach road, fab seafood and meat platters and a really nice upstairs are with fans to help stay cool, we also ate on the beach at a number of places set up on the beach, we liked the Monkey Beach Bar for lunch of a drink on the way further down the beach (also their beach party had some amazing fire dancers!) if you have the energy there are loads of great places to drink and eat on the northern end of the beach but the sand there was corser and there seemed to be lumps of corral and the see is almost too shallow.

Back at the centara beach both Eat Sense and Poppies are an easy walk and recommended and although we didn’t make it the restaurant beachside at The Library looked amazing.

Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants lots of choice but at a quiet end of Chaweng, a fabulous beach and a great hotel with lovely staff! – Thank you Centara Grand.

We stayed in Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui end of August - beginning of September with friends who have stayed there previously and recommended this hotel and we were impressed from the first minute to the last. The hotel itself is a gem and one of the few were you can trust the beautiful pictures on the web.

But what impressed us the most was the level of service in this place, from the check-in to the restaurant staff, beach boys, spa and management, which we met on the cocktail reception. Trully a place were service standards are very high, food is excellent and we simply enjoyed the fact that this is one of the few places left on earth were the guest comes always first and we had the most relaxing holidays ever,

We will be back and will recommend this place to our friends and anzone who travels to Samui

my husband & i stayed at The Centara Grand for 3weeks in July,we have previously been to Koh Samui 3 times,1st time staying in Lamai at the Centara Villas. We had a fantastic time, the staff were amazing, very friendly & couldnt do enough for us.The beach & the pool area were very good.the only downside was the food in the hotel, the breakfast was good but overall the restaurants were very average & overpriced.there were some good theme nights but again food was average.we upgraded to Club Room which was well worth the money, drinks & canapes etc from 5.30-7pm & coffee,te,snacks etc throughout the day.All in all it was a wonderful holiday & we shall definitely be returning next year but for a month next time.

Perfect for us.. only drawback was having to wait for 3 hours until our room was ready. Not a good idea after a long flight...
Watch out for the mosquitoes if you are sitting on the balcony in the bar area... you get eaten alive!
