Novotel Samui Resort Chaweng Beach Kandaburi
Ranked #33 of 104 Hotels in Chaweng
Reviewed 25 June 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed at Kandaburi for two weeks commencing 17th May 2012.

We didn't really know what to expect, and my well travelled boyfriend was particularly apprehensive about Thailand and its safey.

Upon arrival (late at night) we were greeted with a fresh juice and a cold towel - perfect after a long trip! We had booked a beachside room (after doing much research) and thankfully we did, as the hillside rooms were separated by a road and quite far to walk down to the beach. Our room was on the first floor right next to the pool, very lucky. There were rose petals on the bed and in the bath, very nice touch!

We awoke to a BEAUTIFUL day and a beautiful resort! Just heaven, my boyfriend was very impressed. The beachside pool was great and we had no difficulties in getting a sunbed by the pool or on the beach. We went for a stroll along Chaweng beach, where you'll find many other resorts with their bars and massages available. We couldn't believe that we could have a massage overlooking the ocean, only 10 metres away. The beach is very shallow for quite a while out which we loved, but perhaps not good for those after waves!

The resort is walking distance to Chaweng markets (which smelt terrible, so we only went twice). The resort also runs a shuttle bus 3 times a day to Chaweng, although a taxi is very cheap (200 baht).

Frangipanni restaurant (beachside) had great food. We ate at least one meal here everyday. We were also present for happy hour at 3pm each day!

The hotel spa was great, had a very relaxing poolside massage and also a two hour treatment in the actual spa. A bit pricey (in comparison to the massages you can get along Chaweng beach or at the markets), but still a lot cheaper than Australia!

The staff were so friendly and helpful. We ended up hanging out with the beachside bar staff every afternoon playing jenga! We felt like Kandaburi became our second home, and were VERY sad to leave. Will be recommending Kandaburi to family and friends.

I completely agree with csf1981.

The hotel room is nice, spacious but that is all about it. The bathroom is large but i didn't really like the layout where it was just a see through curtain instead of a door.

I got the hill top rooms as well and it was a distance to walk.

The beach was horrible with a lot of moss around it. We had to walk all most 30 minutes to the cleaner part of the beach. And that area also happened to be more interesting and happening.

I won't stay in this hotel again as it is also a good 30 minutes walk to the central where all the shopping is. The road tends to be hilly so a walk along the beach is better.

There isn't free wifi which isn't a plus point at all.

I loved Samui tough. I will return to the island but not the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the beach side is much easier to access the beach rather than the hill top.

In one of my latest reviews I stated that the Thai service is excelent throughout the country because the Thai people are really kind. Well, this hotel made me realize that I was stereotyping. We traveled across thailand for about a month and stayed in many hotels along the way, this is BY FAR the worse experience, do not stay here. We arrived in the hotel and we wanted to see the room before checking in. They wanted us to stay in a room that is located on the other side of this busy street, which means that you have to cross this street everytime you want to go to the beach. They insisted for us to stay there because of its view (NOT WORTH IT AT ALL). No one wants to stay there, so they try to push it. The MANAGER was so disrespectful to the point that when we gave up of the hotel. On our way out he even cracked a joke and started laughing!

Average. We had no wifi in our room, had to go down to the lobby and was very expensive to purchase. Also had to ask for towels etc most days a they were not replaced by house keeping. But fantastic location :)

I'll start by saying that if you are already booked into this hotel, and are checking whether you've made the right choice, don't worry. You have. You'd have a great time. However, if you're reading this and wondering whether to book it, I suppose it would depend on what kind of deal you are getting. All things equal, there are others in Koh Samui I would stay at.

Rooms: The rooms are huge. When looking for a flat in Manchester a few years back, I saw none that were bigger. The beds were really comfy, plenty of storage and nice sitting area. However, the rooms are only separated from the bathroom WC by a curtain. The showed curtain is inadequate and water goes everywhere. The sunken bath, whilst looking gorgeous, is not really made for a western physique and anybody much larger than the norm (in height or weight) will find the bath on the tight side.

The Resort: The hotel is built from the shore up the hill, and as a result some rooms require quite a walk up the hill. My partner was pregnant and struggled significantly in the heat making it back to the room. There are lots of steps and the resort is absolutely not suitable for people who find walking difficult.

The Food: We only had breakfast and lunch and both were fine. Nothing spectacular, but fine.

The pool area: A real plus. Two pools, one in each side of the hotel, and we never had a problem getting pool loungers. The pool itself was rarely crowded and at a nice temperature.

The beach: The beach is nice, but the sea being in a lagoon tends to have a lot of seaweed. The sea is very calm and shallow for a significant distance out.

Location: We found it perfect. A medium distance walk into town along the road, or a much nicer walk along the beach, stopping off at the various beach bars on the way, For Scuba, theres a scuba centre next door.

Facilities: I only really tried the poolside massage. Very reasonable in price and a good massage.

Staff: Some of the staff were amazing (the young girl who worked at breakfast and I think was a student, working during school holidays in particular). There was a mix up when we arrived where it looked as though the hotel had cancelled our booking. Even then though the staff were friendly and helpful just not the perfect start to the holiday.

Would we return. Yes, if it was a good deal. But the competition for hotels on the island means that realistically it would be elsewhere. However, we LOVED Koh Samui.

We stayed here october 2011 and loved it,place was immaculately clean, room was spacious and bathroom was massive,I would love to go back again,I have travelled to the Caribbean and loved it but this place beats there, the scenery is lovely, you are short walk or shuttle bus ride to chaweng with loads of shops, bars, restaurants and massage places(a definite must) it is a steep hill if you walk on return journey, the hotel staff were always polite and friendly and the manager,John was a really nice bloke,it's a quite large resort but never crowded anywhere,in fact the pool at the top we often had to ourselves,I can't compliment this hotel enough and am happy to answer any questions you may have
