“Terrible Experience - Avoid this Resort”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night... and that was enough before leaving for another resort. The hotel is run down and dirty, the cleanliness of the room was terrible and the staff appear to be just going through the motions and laugh and mock the guests...forgetting that the guests are paying their income !

Run Down Resort - Looks like the last make over was 10 years ago ! The wood boardwalk around the pool is in need of repair, with loose boards that are a tripping hazard and rusty nails raised in spots, the pool furniture has paint falling off it.

Cleanliness - the room we stayed in that was a premium suite was dirty and smelly with soap scum on the wall tiles / bathroom taps and hair in the drains from the last guest.

Service - the staff where unhelpful and appeared to use the resort as a gathering spot to laugh at the guests.

Take my advise avoid this resort at all costs !

My husband, myself and my 2 teenage children spent a wonderful 8 nights at the Kandaburi last week. I honestly cannot understand when people complain about this resort. It is simply beautiful, on arrival we where given welcome drinks, wrist garlands, and driven to our Poolside Rooms 211 & 212. The rooms where just perfect, and as everyone comments the Bathrooms are just WOW. Fresh towels and water replaced daily, rooms cleaned, Breakfast was lovely and staff very helpful. The tour desk at the resort is also very good. We did have massages on the beach for the first 4 days, but then we tried a private one just up the street and around the corner. The girls are just awesome. Great massages and fantastic manicures with painted flowers. We hired a car and drove around the island in a day, visiting the Namuang Zoo. The crocodile show and cobra show are very good. We also did an Elephant Trek there and the guides are just wonderful in taking photos and letting you sit up front if you wish. We also did a two hour tour on the Samui Quad Bikes. Very good. My kids very much enjoyed this. Dining is always just amazing on the beach, enjoying cocktails and Thai Food every night. "Our Place" restaurant was quite good, but keep walking down the beach to where you can either sit on the beach or Dine in little huts - just breathtaking. Please remember that the Thailand people just want to please you and if you are kind and courteous they will go out of there way for you. If you can learn how to say hello and Thank you in Thai this will go along way in your relationships with them. You must also remember that in Thailand there are some very strange smells, you may even get the occasional smell in your Room....build a bridge and realise that the smells are part of the Thai experience. Enjoy.

we stayed at the kandaburi with 2 children aged 3 & a baby. Was quite nice, staff were very friendly & loved the kids. Was a lot of stairs & wasnt great with strollers probably wouldnt recommend for families but fine for couples. We stayed on the hillside but would have rathered the beachside as sort of lost the being near the beach feel. It was quiet but still walking distance to Chaweng although not on roads with strollers - quickest way was by the beach. The room & bathroom was huge & had a great view over the pool (room 316) so really couldnt fault that. Prob wouldnt stay there again with kids but overall we had a good stay.

The resort is at the western end of the Chaweng Beach. This is not a problem as the town area is just a 15 minute walk away along the beach. close by are many restaurants , massage and bars all facing on to the beach. the rooms are quite large and tastefully furnished . we had a problem with the airconditioner and had to move to another slightly smaller room, this was all done with minimal fuss. the real problem at this hotel is the amount of beach space available considering the size of the resort. It appears that when the hotel was first built it only occupied the seaward part of the road and the area of beach was quite adequate for this number of rooms. however the hotel has been expanded across the road with 3 times the number of rooms but the beach space cannot be expanded to cater for all these additional people. as a result the chairs are jammed in and some thoughtless people use towels to reserve their spot for the rest of the day. All this is a shame as the hotel is good in other respects and the problem is so obvious when the two smaller resorts each side have ample room.people go to this island largely for the beach life and unfortunately at the Kandaburri this is sorely restricted.

I reside in Thailand for 6 months of the year and travel extensively throughout the country.
This resort has very spacious and nicely furnished rooms however, for a self rated "5 star resort" I was not impressed.
The resort advertises 3 restaurants however, at the time of our stay only one was open. On our first night we tried the buffet which was very ordinary, tough meat and reheated fish. The staff were eating when we arrived and seemed a little disinterested in new guests arriving at 9pm.
Not very attractive swimming pools and , at low tide, the water is 200 metres away.
No clean towels were provided on the second day and there was a fair amount of noise from the room above.
The manager of the resort , who originates from Wales, tries hard and went out of his way to make us feel comfortable on arrival, however it would appear that the thai owners, who own other resorts on the mainland, are on a cost cutting exercise to the detriment of their customers.
We would not return.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2009

We stayed at this hotel from 30th June -14th July in a hillside room 423. Whilst the hotel is clean and nicely situated for getting to and from the centre there are a few issues. Firstly the main pool is an accident waiting to happen, and why they used wooden planks in the climates they get I will never know. There are planks and nails that stick out and it's in a bad state of repair to say this hotel is about 3 years old. Our room was lovely and spacious, so much so you could hold a party in the bathroom alone. When you arrive your room has dressing gowns, slippers, bathroom and beach towels, and two bottles of water which are all complimnetary and for your use whilst at the hotel. Water was never replaced for about 5 days, so we purchased our own from the 7/11 store abd the beach towels weren't replaced apart from 3 days out of 14. The chambermaid service is very poor and even when we spoke to them nothing was ever completed or carried out due to their lack of understanding. Be warned that the language barrier is an issue at this hotel and in general I think given my experiences.

The food is extremely poor. For those of you who have booked half board (like myself) you will find that if trying to dine at the Thai or Mediteranean Restaurants the menu is limited as you can't choose from the entire lengthy menu but a selected half borad menu. The food is ALL if poor qualifty, not that fresh and certainly not cooked correctly. So much so that my daughter became ill and was admitted to Koh Samui Hospital. Prices at the hotel are very expensive. My advice is stay clear of having meals at this hotel apart from breakfast. We always started our day with tea and toast.

Two cokes in the hotel will set you back 190 bahts, whereas on the Beach at India Bar it will set you back 60 bahts. (only a short walk). The drinks and snacks from the 7/11 store are worth buying. Come out of the hotel turn right and walk up the road and around the bend. As for dinning don't go on anyone's recommendations choose yourself. We went to 2 restaurants we were told about and one turned out to be extremely expensive the other was utter rubbish. We dined at Olivio's 2 main courses and two cokes £1600 bahts. The pasta was nothing to write home about. The shacks in Fishermans Village was dreadful and tasted yuck. " burgers and two cokes 75bahts after the waitress deducted 20% because we didn't eat the meal. However we did eat at La Taverna in the centre which was pleasant and always to our liking, 3 courses each, 2 cokes 1500 baht and complimentary drinks to end the evening. Also Pregos was enjoyable and not too far from the hotel. Just look in the Dinning in Samui book and go with your instincts at least if you make the wrong choice it was you own fault and not someone elses.

Right outside the hotel on the beach is the man selling corn on the cob, freshly cooked when you order and a lovely lunch time snack for 50 bahts.

We had two spa treatments at the hotel spa, but regularly used Friends spa not far from the hotel, where the treatments were far cheaper. My refloxology cost 250 bahts and my pedicure with a foot peel 450 baht well worth having. In the centre (by the ladyboy show) is a young lady who does nail art, this is a must and starts from 150 baht, what a bargain. It seems to me that anything to do where labour is involved is cheap but on the whole it's not that cheap a place, make sure you do you conversations correctly. If you're looking to have something made there are 147 tailors on the island and they really do seem to know what they are doing.

Don't get me wrong this hotel is lovely and clean, the beach has tide coming in at least twice a day and so isn't always that clean. Very narrow strip of beach and the beds are next to each other with no privacy. Only about 3 rows of beds. Lush island even though it is so hot and humid and remember the suncreams really do need to be high factors.

The Kandaburi is an absolutely lovely hotel with helpful staff, perfectly situated at the quiet end of Chaweng Beach but within easy walking distance along the beach of many excellent bars and restaurants plus the busy shopping/eating/drinking and nightlife centre of Koh Samui, Chaweng Town.

The Hillside Rooms are spacious and well appointed with efficient airconditioning, and housekeeping kept ours extremely clean throughout our stay. The bathroom was almost big enough to hold a party in...!

The top pool (Hillside) is quiet, and a bit deeper and cooler than the busy main beach-side pool situated a short stroll away from the enormous and frankly luxurious Premium Apartments in the main hotel where our friends stayed. Pool-side service at the beach-side pool is excellent and prices here are roughly on a par with the UK, although you can easily eat , drink and have a massage almost anywhere on the beach and elsewhere at a much lower cost.

We were surprised at the lack of biting/stinging tropical insects despite the lush gardens, and John Williams, the Kandaburi's experienced General Manager explained that they grew plenty of lemon-grass, which is a natural insect repellent...! John hails originally from Wales (UK) and encourages his staff to work together, as well as having a keen interest in conservation - the Kandaburi is self-sufficient in water due to a number of wells on the premises, and the water is perfectly safe for ice-cubes and cleaning your teeth, although bottled water is provided free in your room for drinking.

The Frangipani restaurant near the beach-side pool offers excellent open-air dining and features generous fixed price buffet evenings with various excellent themed entertainments. The resident band are surprisingly good with a large repertoire!

The sea off Chaweng beach is relatively shallow with many sand-bars, and due to the island's new sewage system, little or no sewage is discharged into the bay and it is perfectly safe to paddle and swim in the sea - perfect on a lazy Koh samui afternoon and with wonderful views.

Overall, the Kandaburi and indeed Koh Samui were excellent value for money and well worth a visit. It would not have been possible to have nearly as good a hoilday in the UK at the price including scheduled air-fares, plus there was the weather, the food, the low local prices and the tropical ambience - need I say more...!!!??
