“Nice hotel. Bad check in experience with the staff.”
Reviewed 17 June 2010

Dara samui review
The hotel was very nice. Very well done in the Thai Lanna style. Unfortunatly I had a bad experience checking in with the staff getting our rooms confused first and lying to us after.  When we checked in we had three rooms, two king beds and one twins. For some reason they got them confused and we got two twin rooms and one king. I told them of the mix up and they Offered to push the twin beds together for us. I said this was not acceptable and told them we needed a king. They went to change the rooms and came back to show us the new room which looked fine at first glance. We showered and then laid in the bed only to find out it was actually twins pushed together. I called the front desk (late night now so same girl working who checked us in) and asked for a real king bed. "I'm sorry sir, all the king beds in the hotel are done like this." was here reply. I accepted this and called my friends for dinner. I mentioned my disappointment at the king beds not being king beds at all and my friend told me that he had a king, a real one. I was furious at this and immediately went to the front desk and demanded we were given a new room. She resisted a bit at first, telling us that nothing would be available until the next day. I told her how angry I was at being lied to and I demanded to speak to a manager. At this time she suddenly found another available king room. I'm sure there were many as this is low travel season in thailand. We moved to the new room and were satisfied with the rest of the stay.

My self and my partner stayed at this hotel for 4 days / nights form 26-30 May 2010. We arrive about 10:30 pm and our bags where taken for us up to the checkin desk. We was given lovely cooling towels to refresh ourselves and a nice drink of orange juice. The checkin was very quick and the staff where very polite and always smiling. The room was beyond what we had expected and made the hotel by far one of the nicest I have seen in many years. The layout of the rooms and bathroom was great. The bath tub was huge and spacious. The hotel breakfast was nice and reasonable selection "fruit, toast, selection of cooked breakfasts". The pool settign and layout was great! the pool overlooked the beach / sea. Had a lovely waterfall setting in the pool. The pool bar was cheap (in my opinion) and also the bbq chicken skewers were lovely (these became a daily must). The staff in and around the hotel were always smiling and happy. The pool ar staff liked to make sure its guests knew when it was happy hour to get a good cheap drink in. and always asked if you would like another drink (not pestering though). There was never a lack of sunbeds. There is loads of massage places next to the hotel on the beach ranging from 200-300 thb. The hotel resturant was very nice we ate there one eve. We used the hotel transfer service to the airport which was about 300-350 THB.

This hotel was fantastic and we will be going back here with no hesitations.

The bathroom was extremely beautiful.
The staff of the hotel were very polite and helpful.
Many options for breakfast (a la carte) and it was very tasty.
The restaurant of the hotel near the sea was very nice and very romantic.

We originally checked into the hotel next door, and were so disgusted by the rooms we went for a wander to see what else we could get. We didnt have to look far and 20 minutes later were checked out and into the new one, and screaming with joy at how much better the Dara was. Hotels in Samui aren't cheap compared to the rest of Thailand but it's worth paying a little more to get this level of hotel, you'd pay a lot more for this standard in Europe so it is good value. The rooms were spotless and beautifully designed, (pebbles in the bathroom and beautiful wood and Thai paintings on the walls), as was the pool area which overlooked the beach. They even provide a beach bag for you to take down with you including towels so you needn't bring anything yourself. Location was perfect too right on the main street in Chaweng close to everything that was needed. Could not fault this hotel and if I do go back to Samui I will have no hesitation to book this place!

WE loved our 9 nights stay at Dara Samui. Rooms were very comfortable with all the added extras PLUS more... every night there was a little Thai homemade treat on your bed. They really have thought of everything. The pool is fabulous with a jacuzzi, waterfall & beanbags to lounge on. The beach is a few step away with ample loungers, umbrellas & tables for drinks from the pool bar. each afternoon they play great music down on to the beach. I did find the beach & the water on Cheweng beach slightly dirty & not clear like you find in Ko php Phi & Phuket side, bust still gorgeous. All in all, Dara Samui is a perfect spot for any traveller.

I am not quite sure if i would recomment this hotel i have very mixed feelings about it after staying for 4 nights.

Highlights
- Nice large rooms (superior room)
- dvd player in room and dvds to borrow
- great location

Negative Points
- service was very poor.
- breakfast was to be selected from menu not a buffet, we each selected one meal item eg pancakes or bacon and eggs, only a few days later did the staff let slip that we could actually order more then one item per person. otherwise we would have never known.
- not enough lounge chairs, on arrival there were no chairs to sit on, although half of them were empty, it seems everyone bags there spot but may not be around for hours, one day three chairs were occupied all day yet i never saw anyone on them.
- no lounge chairs around pool only on beach.
- during check out we were in a hurry to make our flight the receptionist was no help at all when we asked if someone could bring our luggage to the front 10 mins later nothing, my partner had to go collect the luggage himself, the receptionist was more concerned with the minibar andf if we had had anything.

overall not a great experience, with so many options on koh samui would look for something else next time.
