Owner description: A holiday in Jersey is not complete without a visit to Jersey War Tunnels to learn about and experience one of the most difficult periods in the Island’s history. The story of the German Occupation of Jersey is as compelling as it is strange to think that this small area of Britain was Occupied by the Nazis and forced to fly the Swastika for five dark years. The Jersey War Tunnels are no ordinary museum, they are an unforgettable experience. Dug deep into the hillside within St Peter’s Valley, the Tunnels were originally intended to be a barracks and ammunition store for the occupying forces. Today they tell the story of the Occupation, looking at how all sides coped under such extreme conditions and examining the daily dilemmas that were faced by island residents and the authorities, whether Jersey, British or German.Outside the Tunnels, you can enjoy quiet moments in the Garden of Reflection or a woodland walk along the historic War Trail. Refresh yourself in the Pantry Cafe or enjoy the shop and craft activities in LoveBird Too.

A trip to the underground hospital is a must. It is a great insight into how the German occupying forces tried to protect those who had been injured. There are several first hand accounts of what life was like. Although these tunnels were never finished or used you get a real feeling of being back in time. It is quit dark and can be a little chilly but this just adds to the atmosphere. There is a cafe and shop selling souvenirs onsite. You also get a id card from the time and at the end of the trip if you go to the shop you can see who your card is and what happened to him/her during the occupation

The tunnels are not just for the people interested in war museums as it gives an insight into how the islanders lives were affected by the 5 year occupation, hits home when get a replica identity card when you enter the tunnel network, then afterwards go into the cafe where you can find what happened to the person on the identity card, some very sad stories indeed.

Very good visit to the tunnels. It is a popular place and justifiably so. The tour around the tunells takes around 2 hours to see everything and the there is a very good cafe available to visit. It is bright and airy and you can check out the passports you were given on entry to the tunnels and find out what happened to the passport holder during and after the war
