We enjoy having a relaxing cup of coffee and a snack when we do the walk along the river at Karangahake Gorge every few months. We usually stop somewhere for lunch, and to our delight a lovely new cafe has made the trip from Auckland all the more enticing. Behind the main street in Paeroa we found 'The Refinery'. Absolutely our cup of tea (or coffee) and they do Devonshire Teas too !! It has a gorgeous garden with outside seating, outdoor art, and a peaceful environment (away from the traffic). Inside there are old sofas and coffee tables. We will be back sooner than later

We were lucky enough to spot the sign leading to The Refinery when stopping for a coffee in Paeroa. You need to look out for the sign , which is on the main road, and then follow it through an alleyway to Willoughby Street. It's only a minute or so, and is definitely worth the walk! This cafe is found in a superb art gallery and garden showcasing local glass artists in particular. The cafe itself is limited in food selection, pretty much Devonshire tea/ scones/ muffins, but the coffee is hot and good. It's only been open since December so I'm sure the range of food will expand. You can sit in a cosy little eating area, or better still go out into the lovely cottage garden and eat surrounded by some gorgeous artwork! All of the work is for sale and is pretty well-priced. The owner and one of the contributing artists, Dermot Kelly, was very friendly and joined us for a chat about art and about the local bike trail. We really loved our stop here, stayed much longer than we'd planned , and will definitely visit again, next time with some money to buy a piece of the lovely glass on display.
