Owner description: Kapiti Island is one of New Zealand's most visited places for bird watchers. It is an internationally renowned sanctuary and is blessed with an abundance of native and endangered species like Little Spotted Kiwi, Takahe, and the cheeky Kaka who have not survived so well on the mainland. This nature-inspired setting is the perfect place to experience New Zealand's native birds in their natural environment.Kapiti Island is just 40 minutes north of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. Activities include half and full day nature tours, overnight Kiwi spotting and rare bird tours. The Maori hospitality you will experience on Kapiti Island - one of New Zealand's most precious nature reserves - is unsurpassed.

The boat from Paraparaumu only takes 15 mins. It is only a 14 seater water taxi so if the water is not smooth it can get a bit bumpy. We were dropped off at the island with a guide who gave us a 30 min low down on the island and then we had time to ourselves for a few hours. As it turned out we were only only 2 to be dropped off which was bliss to have that bit of the island to ourselves. We walked the Wilkinson track to the summit and saw pretty well all of the forest birds that we could have seen.
We were picked up on time and the ride back was quite a bit rougher as the wind had got up. The captain took that into consideration and slowed down but when we "docked" on the cradle trailer there was a mistiming and we rammed the trailer instead of slotting into the cradle. It was a big jolt that hurt my fiancee's back.
Would do it again anytime

This was a wonderful tour. All the people running the tour were extremely nice, helpful, communicating everything we needed to know. Arrangements were easy, boat trip safe and short, nature walk very nice, and the food was superb starting off with fresh paua and wine and cheese outside on the lodge deck with a kaka keeping close eye on any unattended food. We saw lots of kakariki, tui, fantail, whiteheads, weka and two nesting burrows belonging to the little brown kiwi. And also peeped down under the lodge deck to see some nesting little blue penguins. The meal was a beautiful buffet of fresh fish and salads all prepared and presented with care. I would have liked the trip to be longer with unstructured time to walk along the trails not part of a group since the birds mostly get scared away by the group. I highly recommend this trip.

We spent an evening in lush regenerating bush, seeing abundant wildlife (birds) including some I'd never seen in the wild before (kaka and takahe) then a "fish and chip" dinner (f you could really call it that!) with a group enjoying it as much as us. Manaaki, Susan and John (not to forget Lindsay the chef and the boaties): thankyou for an unforgettable evening on the magical island I have watched from the shore all my life but never visited. Go visit if you get the chance- you will not be disappointed.

Amazing experience - should be compulsory!! Wonderful to see native birds in their natural habitat and wandering around like chickens! Saw Takahe, Tui, Bellbirds, Kaka, Weka, Kiwi, Shining Cuckoo, Royal Spoonbill, Saddleback, etc etc! Scenery amazing and all so close only a 15 minute boat trip! That was part of the experience too. Only in NZ would you get in a boat in the carpark and then get towed out to sea by a tractor!! :-)
Amazing hosts - very knowledgeable and friendly++ and great food. Comfortable lodging. Will be back :-)
