Our second visit to the Orchid, and again, we left happy and satisfied.
Brunch Sunday and the place was very busy. Maybe a 20 minute wait to be seated, a bit of a delay getting our order placed as our server was doing double-duty at the cash register and each time she tried to get to us, another table would leave and she'd be delayed.

Once the order was placed, it arrived fairly quickly. Eggs Bene ($12.00) all around, very tasty, nicely poached eggs just runny enough, on toasted English muffins and home fries.

Coffee refills arrived by magic, a great local spot with a fun vibe.

Maybe have an extra server on busy weekends? There were only two the day we were there, serving both the inside space and an outside patio, with another person busing tables, and taking the occasional order. Another pair of hands would really help move things along.

Service was good, no complaints overall, however when asked how breakfast was and I replied that I was surprised that the home fries were pre frozen product it was suggested I have fries next time as they were fresh cut. ... hmmm fries for breakfast ......

The Orchid in Thornbury, Ontario is one of those places which seems to be feeding the whole town, and nobody gets very excited. We went in around 2pm, and the place was buzzing, many patrons chomping down on the breakfast offering even at that late hour of the afternoon.
The service is diner friendly, with waitresses making the rounds with the coffee, and asking if everything is to your satisfaction. The place is clean and fresh and the placing of the tables gives it a down home atmosphere.
The food is tasty and quickly served, and there is a lot of choice, although I got the feeling that the locals tend to go for the breakfast fare which is extensive. The fries are top notch and not too greasy.
All in all, the Orchid reminds me of those American diners you find in the South where people lounge around all day, chomping on fries and hamburgers and pretty well taking the day in stride.
I really did not find much negative about this place, save that the parking lot was too small.
Of course, you don't want to expect too much either.
Just sit down and enjoy the moment at the Orchid, and see how laid back people spend the day in pretty little Thornbury.

Used to come here all the time. Last time I was there the service was terrible. I believe I was served by the owner and she was rude. Food seems to have fallen off too. The chef when we were there kept coming out of the kitchen and glaring at us even though we had not complained. Felt weird! Have not been back since!

We have been going to the Orchid for many years and have always enjoyed it until now. We started at their location where Tim's sits now then over to the place across from Home Hardware (now Steve's) and now at the newest spot. The Orchid always had well prepared fresh food and even though their prices creeped up on some basic fare it was still a place we would head to, especially for the fish and chips-the best from here to Orillia. Yesterday we both decided that fish and chips would be great to have so we hopped in the car and headed to Thornbury (from Collingwood). The food arrived VERY quickly-much faster than normal and it was obvious why. Both orders had obviously been pre-cooked and when it didn't sell was put away. Now that they had 2 'fish' on the line they jumped at the opportunity to get rid of a potential $ loss and put the already cooked food back in the fryer. The fish and fries were both heavily re-seasoned and quite crusty and dark will no flavour as it had been cooked out. By accident there was an onion ring under the fries and it was so over cooked from its second insertion into the grease it was petrified. In all a very unpleasant meal. The service was poor as well-there were only 3 people in the restaurant and all of us were ignored. At one point we were asked if we wanted more coffee (at the end of the meal) and we said yes-however the server never returned with it. Given the lack of customers and the additional competition in the area maybe the Orchid is not doing that well, however, if this is what you serve then don't expect your once loyal customer base to remain. Sorry to say goodbye to you.
