We have just returned from a week in Corfu (4th to 12th August 08) and could not wait to praise the Stephania II apartments and Kassiopi as a whole!
We were originally supposed to be at the AFRODITE apartments in KAVOS, this being a last minute booking and nothing else being available. As a family of 4, with children aged 11 and 13, we were a bit perturbed when we arrived at Gatwick to find the 18-30 crowd of Hen/Stag revellers were going to the same hotel!, we steeled ourselves for the worst holiday ever.
Upon arriving in Corfu, the Thomas Cook Reps informed us that the AFRODITE was overbooked, and pointed out to us that the AFRODITE may not be to our liking, and would we like to be moved to a different place, they said they had a more 'Family friendly apartments in KASSIOPI, we jumped at the opportunity.
The STEPHANIA II is a 4 block self catering apartment made up of two single apartments and two double apartments., each with a basic kitchen area and single beds in each room. NOTE: there is no air conditioning or FANS so be prepared to obtain from your Rep, or rent in town/bring your own.
The downsides are: rooms were only cleaned once a week, and the bathroom needs a good scrub, but we did not find these offputting, there were brooms/mops available so we were able to keep the rooms clean ourselves. Also clean bedding needs to be changed/provided more often. The water from the showers WILL change temperature on you so be careful not to scald/freeze yourselve. We made it a bit of a game by keeping the water cool it goes from cool to cold rather than hot to scalding, and then waited for the screeches from the shower (and in the heat a cool shower is very necessary!!)
Next door is a building site, but it does not seem to make much noise, except on Saturdays!!(may be a slow season at the moment) The main noise is from the scooters and young people driving up and down the road at night, and sometimes there is a dog a couple of doors down that barks at night, we were usually so tired that these things did not bother us.
On more positive notes, having a pool only shared by a few people means that there is no fighting for the sunbeds, plenty to go around, and the pool is never full, we shared our stay with another family of 4, with two small children of around 7 and 8, and their Grandmother, and a single couple. The other holiday makers made the time in the apartments pleasurable, as everyone was friendly and the children got on well. Watching the Sun Set from our balcony or just sitting outside at night and staring at the stars was very peaceful (albeit except for the aforementioned noises)
We saw the apartments as a base, and ate out all week. There is a store 2 minutes to the left, and the main area is 7 minutes to the right of the apartment. You can buy a mini barbecue and get fresh meat/fish from the market, or simply eat out every day. The beaches are pebbly but the water is lovely, there is scuba diving and excursions bookable in town. We went on a couple of trips with the holiday company, the trip around all the historical sites of corfu was too rushed, and would not suggest doing that, also check out the prices of all the trips in town first we found out. ,belatedly, that it would have been cheaper this way. Eating out here can be expensive, so be prepared!! we found we were spending over 90 euros a night on meals/drinks. We did not see any problems/violence from locals/holiday makers.
If you are looking for a more gentle type of holiday, whether simply relaxing by the pool, or gentle walks The local fort is being restored and is worth a look. The children loved the ability to wake up and jump into a pool. We loved the ability to go down at any time, and not find all the chairs taken.
If you are looking for a base from which to go out each day, then I do not think you will be dissapointed.
