“Canoe Safari a must do”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We travelled from Kubu Cabins, 20 km west of Livingstone to Gwabi Lodge, all different road conditions ranging from potholed- to brand new tarred- and horrible gravel roads. It is doable, but ensure that you leave early not to miss the beautiful mountain scenery just before Chirundu and arrive before dark. We left late, were delayed in Livingstone due to ATMs being out of order, had a breakdown and only arrived at the Lodge at 21h30. We send an sms to the lodge to let them know that we would be late and subsequently received a phone call to ensure that we were ok - it is much appreciated to know that people care! The next day we did an awesome day canoe safari, down the Kafue River and into the Zambezi. Our adrenaline levels rose when charged by Hippos, but with Nicolas our guide we felt safe at all times. This is an experience not to be missed! Lake Kariba is only about 100km away from Gwabi Lodge a day trip to Kariba is well worth it. We camped at Gwabi Lodge for 3 nights, beautiful campsites right on the river. The ablution block needs a bit of maintenance, but it was spotlessly clean. Thank you Tony for your help with the planning of our trip, and Nicolas for the memorable canoe safari!

We stayed at gwabi in April for 5 nights and had a great time. We signed up for a 3 day canoe safari with them which was both epic and at times a little scary! Canoeing past elephants on the bank was unforgettable and being charged by hippos definitely got the heart rate up... But our guide Nicolas was great!

The owners were really friendly and accommodating and even gave us a lift back to Lusaka.

The main bar & restaurant has an awesome view of the river and a really nice pool. The chalet rooms are clean and comfortable with air con and nice bathrooms with hot showers.

Would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to explore the Lower Zambezi...

A great place to enjoy the Kafue and Zambezi rivers! Comfortable chalets, wonderful host, stunning sunsets, good food and a relaxing, peaceful environment. Spend your day out fishing on the river, or boat cruising to watch hippos, elephants, crocs, birds and other aquatic wildlife as they go about their day. Enjoy a sandbar braai for lunch or chill out poolside watching life float by. Gwabi is definitely a laid-back way to escape the urban madness and experience Africa’s river wild.

Coming to the end of summer in the lower Zambezi it is still very hot during the day with a coolness settling down during the evening. Excellent fishing, delicious food surrounded by pleasant and helpful staff and the most gorgeous green surroundings. I feel energised. Thank you Ant and Ann Weber for making this my home away from home.

Gwabi lodge is a great place to start exploring the lower Zambezi. There is a fantastic pool overlooking the Kafue River, which is very welcome in the heat of the day. The sunset boat trip to the confluence of the Zambezi and Kafue yielded some great sightings of elephant, crocs, saddle bill storks, goliath herons....the list goes on. Chalets are basic, and do need some maintenance. The steaks were great and the staff friendly!
