Owner description: The museumship Pommern is the world’s only 4-masted sailing ship still in its original state. On board you can explore the ship from hold to charthouse. The ship is a part of the Aland Maritime Museum, an exciting museum for children and adults alike. The exhibitions are filled with dramatic stories, fantastic objects and lots of interactivities. The Aland Maritime Museum is open all year round, the museumship Pommern between May and September.

The museum and ship were a fantastic experience, in the course of the afternoon I learned a lot about the history of seafaring and what it has meant for this tiny island nation. We spent over three hours there, studying the museum exhibits and visiting the ship.

This is one of the best "museums" I have visited, because it shows the real stuff just as it was. No extracts or only photos - this is the ship as it was! The nearby maritime museum and the ship kept the extended family ranging from small children to grand parents busy and interested for 4 hours. Do not miss the 20 minute movie on the Pommern ship from a voyage to Australia 1936-37 and modern interviews with people who worked on the ship - very exciting for everyone as it shows the actual ship in action. In addition the displays onboard manage to tell the sailing ship story with tools, navigation equipment, correspondence and not least pantry, cabin and the onboard equipment. The nearby maritime museum is also included in the combined ticket price - well worth the money.

It's fascinating to have a walk at this amazing ship well. The ship is located in the harbour and can be seen from the large ferries arriving to Mariehamn every day.
Bring your kids with you, they will have fun there as well. And don't forget the museum just in the neighbourhood.

The Pommern should entertain anyone regardless of age & background, the sheer scale of the ship and the paraphernalia inside will keep you wondering for a good while. Be sure to visit the maritime museum first, though, to get properly "tuned in" the life of seamen, an exhibition well worth exploring.

This is a different kind of museum, that's pretty fun to visit.
Not your average boat-museum, you get to try out your karaoke-abilities (yes, it's a thing) if you're so brave, the historical tours make a point out of being funny, and they are.
They have quite a few hands-on things for kids to try out, like a sort of real-life Tetris game all about balance (you try to stack a ship), masts they can climb, ports they can sail ships into (also a fun mini-game) and even a ship rat called Ruby which has a room of their own. Fun!
For the adults there's also a lot of fun to be had (if you're not stealing the kids' games, they're FUN). From the moment you go into the museum and have to go down to climb the ship, you get a nautical feeling.
You can see an old captain's quarters, complete with plush turn-of the century decor, they have a LOT of old things very well preserved to look at, an interesting history of the ship, an extensive maritime photo-gallery, old logbooks and sea-maps and there's a rather amusing and great giftshop as well.
All in all a fun stop on an Åland-trip.
