“ok place to stay when You enjoy Åland not except too much from hotel”
Reviewed 24 July 2013

Outside look of this hotel is not flattering, but inside it is ok. Hotel is situated by the sea close harbour where you can take o ferry to Sweden or mainland Finland. There is great maritime museum close by with well kept old sailingship Pommern, 110 years old ship where you can visit.
Reception was pretty friendly and quick. Our room was a room for family, we traveled with two children aged 4 and 9. Children slept in a ladder bed, which gave more space on the floor in the room. Room was tidy and quiet. There was a small swimming pool to use downstairs for hotel guest freely to use, and kids loved that. And there was room for kids to play, which was a hit in our family. It was very crowded during breakfast at the restaurant, and personnel had trouble to handle the situation, and they were no that friendly at that moment. Had to wait for table, and then for food! Not nice situation. Other ways would say that for this price hotel was ok, and is average hotel to stay. There are many attractions in Mariehamn and in Åland anyway, especially if you love sea, ships, nature, sun, peace...

We stayed at this Hotel in midsummer 2011. Eventhough Mariehamn is a small town the trip from the ferry terminal lasted 45 minutes or more, stopping as it seemed at every larger stone along the way to let someone off. When finally arriving in town there was a good walk. Fortunately we were prepared for this and didn't have too much to carry. Road signs were not very helpful and we had to walk on instinct since the map provided was unclear as well. After 25 minutes we arrived at the hotel and everything worked as planned. We knew we would be assigned a rather simple room with toilet and shower in the hallway. The room was indeed simple but clean. The toilet and shower as well. However, we where not prepared for the clientel attracted to this hotel. They were mainly in their early 20´s and apparently lived in a different daily-rythm than ours. They were very noisy and disturbing but never really threatening in any way. Just brainless.
The breakfast was good but not overwhelming. Apparently the Hotel were short on staff and could not keep up with the guests. It was best to be very early otherwise you ended up waiting for things never turning up.
The SPA-department was ok but likewise there was a shortage in just about everything. When pointing this out to the staff it was fixed promptly. However, always having to point out the obvious introduced a fatigue and we decided to leave earlier than planned. It is probably much better, at least for the mental health, to pay more and make sure you get what you expect. I felt sorry for the staff. They really didn´t deserve this and they did what they could. I suspect that this was a mis-managed hotel.

Room Tip: The price different between "kaptensgårdarna" and the rooms inside the hotel itself is cle...

We were staying in Kaptensgårdarna part of the hotel. The only good thing about the hotel is the location. It is VERY close to both (Viking/Silja and Birka) terminals. Otherwise the hotel is very old, dirty and expensive. Seems like the owner does not put any euro in it and just use everythin out of it. Everything is worn out and old. I feel sorry for the staff. They seemed to be nice.

We spent two days in beautilful Mariehamn staying at the Captains Villas right across the Hotel Adlon. It's a simple, but clean bed&breakfast place with a sea view over the harbor.
The bathroom on the corridor has to be shared with other guests.

Breakfast is served buffet style offering a variety of cereals, yoghurts, breads, cheese and sausages.

If you don't mind simplicity - this is the place to stay.

We stayed in fact in Kaptensgardarna, which is the annex of Hotel Adlon (a bit cheaper, breakfast and services are in the main hotel, just 30 m away, bathrooms are supposed to be shared but we had one in our room).

Location is convenient (very close to the ferry terminal, not far from city center), but the rooms have seen better days and are halfway between hotel and youth hostel. Breakfast is good. A PC with free Internet access is available at reception.

Good value for money compared to other hotels in Mariehamn, but the absolute quality/price ratio is poor.

I've stayed here three times now (I keep returning for a hobbyist conference). The rooms are simple, a bit worn down and not very fresh, the cleaning is spotty and you don't get a "Don't disturb" sign so the cleaners will wake you up before 9 AM even on Saturdays and Sundays. A plus is free wi-fi in the lobby. It's quite a friendly hotel, though, and the adjacent sports bar and pizzeria is very nice.

It's good enough for us, but not really what I'd recommend if you are a bit picky.
