“A Nice find! Though not the easiest to find!”
Reviewed 17 June 2011

Great relaxing atmosphere, nice pool and beach, very private. Gated property, large gate
even to enter with a car. Nice views and view of castle. Staff very nice and polite. Rooms are very nice and modern. Everything clean and large property. A better choice than the crowded Argigento hotels. Only about 45 minutes from Valley of Temples and
Agrigento. Not much choice for dining other than the resort, but is a nice restaurant.
A very nice secluded resort/hotel. We only stayed one night while passing through, but
would have loved to stay another night just to have relaxed and enjoyed the property.

I really enjoyed staying at the Falconara. The location is beautiful near beach and a magnificent view on the Castle. Not only does one has an opportunity to relax on this beach - as well as a (large) swimming pool. On top of all, the restaurant is outstanding, with a nice touch of local Sicilian food specialities and extremely well selected local wines.
Alltogether a pleasant and agreable stay, with pretty helpful and hospitable staff.
Car needed for visits of the surrounded places.

just few words to say thank you to the staff of this wonderful hotel..i stayed alone for one week, to relax and think about my life...it was a wonderful stay..nice beach, great food, but the great thing was the staff especially the tall night porter with his impressive capacity to feel the guest as at home...professional and hardworker and the same is for the other guy, the nice and young valet with his care and attention towards me.. The castle is fantastic and very suggestive. Lots of things to do nearby: wine and food tasting, guided tours in caltagirone, piazza armerina, agrigento. the hotei is in a central position.
So I advice this hotelto my friends!!

Driving west along the south coast of Sicily, one passes through the charmless and utilitarian streets of Gela, but great if you want to fill your car with fruit and vegetables for Euro 20.00! Then through an ocean of plastic polytunnels that allows Sicilian farmers to have so much early produce and finally round a bend in the road you spy the Castello Falconara perched on it's rock overlooking the sea and drive up to the huge electrically operated gates of the Falconara Charming House & Resort. One's initial impression of the entrance of the main building is of a corporate headquarters, rather than a 'Charming House' but this impression is soon dispelled by the view through the reception area to the landscaped gardens and view of the Castello — not open to guests or the public but a dramatic presence day and night and the friendly welcome of the reception staff.

Our luggage quickly arrived at the door to our room, a lofty first floor sea view room with balcony in the Club House, four poster bed, flat screen tv, mini-bar and generous bathroom. The more expensive rooms are in the 'Fattoria' overlooking the beach with exposed patios, great in good weather, less so in the thunderstorm we experienced for one night of our stay in mid-May.

The Club House main building and pool are located quite near the main road, consequently suffering from some background traffic noise. The beach area comprises two levels of fine sand with numerous loungers and parasols, plenty for everyone when we were there, plus a lifeguard in attendance all day.

We had arranged our 4 night stay on a half-board basis: buffet breakfasts were copious and to a good standard and the preferred dinner offer was an amazing 7 course tasting menu, that at Euro 30.00 was a great bargain, although a-la-carte was also available. Presentation was in a contemporary style and the sommelier's suggestions for wine each evening introduced us to the excellence of modern Sicilian wines and at very fair prices.

The Falconara Charming House & Resort is quite remote, although there are other resorts along the coast towards Licata, the nearest town. We visited Licata which has a number of baroque buildings in it's old town, a big fishing port and a halo of modern development which is initially off-putting. Local people were very friendly, the staff at the tourist information point in the cloisters of the San Francesco church were very helpful and we had a pleasant drink and free nibbles at the Cafe St Angelo, inset into the fabric of the St Angelo church.

The Falconara Charming House & Resort makes for a relaxing short break if the weather is good and great value at this time of year. Staff were charming and the food excellent.

Room Tip: Try for upper sea view clubhouse rooms.

I loved the setting, however the bed was very uncomfortable. There were no screens on the windows so one had to either sleep with them closed or indure an onslaught of being bitten all night. I wanted to put the air conditioning on but was told it did not get turned on until June 1st. I found that ridiculous at the prices they were charging. The bed should be luxurious for this type of place. The room did not get cleaned until the afternoon and only after calling the front desk. The internet access is terrible and also not acceptable for a hotel of this caliber. All that being said the location and setting is lovely.

Dear Guest,
first of all I would like to thank you for your comment.
Apart from the enchanting and lovely setting that you highlighted, what we really are focusing on is the quality of our services, that we try to ensure without neglecting details.
Naturally, good sleep makes happy customers. This is the reason why all mattresses have been chosen to deliver comfort and to ensure relax for our guests, since they contain non-allergenic elements and they achieve high quality standards.
The central air-conditioning system was off because temperature in May was about 20 degrees and none of our customers felt the need to turn it on.
Moreover, according to our cleansing standards, every room is cleaned twice a day. The chambermaid clean it first before 12.00 am, unless guests are still in it. In this case, they don’t get in, of course.
With reference to the screens, actually, in some of our rooms, especially those located in the most ancient part of the resort, the old dependence of the Castle, there are only external ones. This is due to the initial choice to reproduce the old style. But, to make guests more comfortable, we are now providing all the rooms with elegant additional screens.
We thank you very much for your review, which will surely be taken into account to improve our services.

We spent the first week of a fortnight's holiday here with the intention of just crashing out and relaxing on the beach/ by the pool. This was a very good choice for such an experience. Great views of the castle and the coastline from the beach, and good swimming (lifeguard present during the day). The pool is located away from the beach and hotel building, and is great for swimming and relaxing. Room was large and clean, and air con was very effective. Bathroom was large and had full bath as well as good shower. The food was excellent, and we easily had seven suppers in a row without getting bored.

Things to be aware of:
(i) The hotel isn't in the most inspiring location, just off the relatively busy SS115 coastal road. This doesn't matter once you are within the precincts of the hotel, which has lovely views of the castle, of the pretty coastline and of the rolling hills inland; there is also no road noise. But it isn't a great first impression and there are no facilities/ shops/ sites within walking distance.
(ii) The pool -- which is large and where we spent much of our time -- is inexplicably located reasonably close to the main road. Only very rarely can you hear or see a vehicle, and the views of the nearby hills are good, but it might put some people off.
(iii) Some noise passes between the rooms/ floors in the main building. This was never a real problem as it is a very quiet hotel; but again, one should be aware.
(iv) Although there were some locally-inspired courses on the menu, one wouldn't really have known one was in Sicily. That's fine, if that is what one is after -- it is more typical, modern European luxury beach hotel than authentic Sicilian retreat.

For those who have stayed at the sister Hotel Philosophy property 'La Coluccia' on Sardinia, a quick comparison: Falconara feels larger (it has about 50 per cent more rooms), and a little bit more like a resort than a small hotel; the pool is a proper swimming pool, larger than at La Coluccia; the rooms are much larger, and even the basic rooms have baths, not just showers.
