We stayed in the hotel back in June for a very short overnight stay on our way to the Loire Valley. We were travelling by car from the UK, 4 adults and one large dog. The hotel staff could not have been more accommodating even though we arrived after 10pm ....they offered us food and brought drinks to the garden, we instantly relaxed. We had stayed in the hotel about 10 years ago and it had been lovely then and we were not disappointed on our return. So much so that we have booked again for September. I would definitely consider for a weekend break too as it is a perfect base for discovering the battlefields. Breakfast was yummy too!

Room Tip: No air conditioning but large windows that you can throw open. Standard rooms are a little smaller...

This chateau has undergone a recent makeover which ensures it is modern and luxurious whilst retaining 18th century feel. Excellent staff, an abundant selection of restaurants from Michelin star to brasserie and plenty of nooks in which to relax with a quiet calvados

I have read some of the other reviews and find them intriguing. Our stay was nothing short of fabulous. We had a large room with a large lovely bathtub that was a great attraction at the end of a long day. Our room was on the main floor at the end of a hall so it was quiet.

The dining room was superb. The wait staff did their jobs in the manner that exemplified the highest standard. A great waiter seems to be there when needed and the food appears before you as if by magic at the right time and with no fuss.

The menu is inventive. Our table of ten spent an hour just discussing the food, how it was made and how it was presented. Of course the selection of wines and cheeses was superb as well.

We also had two superb breakfasts where the menu could be whatever much you wanted.

The bar is also a comfortable place the finish a day.

The desk staff were fun, curious about our questions and very helpful.

The location could be described as the middle of nowhere so use a GPS unless you have a great navigator. Not a bad place for an exercise run but there is not anywhere to walk to. It is in the countryside.

La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit is, at its heart, a lovely old building which has been sensitively extended to provide a comfortable, charming and very pleasant place to stay.

Our rooms, while relatively new, felt as if they had been in place for many years with good quality and well chosen furnishings. Beds were good and the bathroom stylish.

The gardens around the hotel provide both a visual feast and food for the tables in the three restaurants.

We ate in the mid priced restaurant and, while its not cheap, we felt we had good value for money.

The staff were, universally, very good and they put up with our appaling French with good humour.

This is an ideal place to spend a final night in France before heading home to the UK as the main, Calais bound, autoroute is only a couple of kilometres away.

We chose this property based on the unique sounding nature of the property and proximity to WWI sites. We were more than pleased with our choice.
Location: Situated in the "country", a navigation system would be helpful to find it. There are signs as you get closer, but it was confusing for Canadians. As it right by a motorway, it is very convenient to head out each morning in any direction to visit the WWI sites near Arras, Vimy, Amiens, Albert, Beaumont-Hamel, etc.
Property: The rooms were large with modern bathrooms. The windows in our room were floor to ceiling and with the shades open, provided a lot of light. The fittings in the room were new, but the obvious effect was to create a certain period atmosphere, which was part of the charm.
Restaurants: We ate at Le Vasco on two of the nights and were pleased with all of our selections. Le Vasco had the outdoor patio so that we could enjoy the excellent weather. We did not want to take the full breakfast, so the staff were more than accommodating to provide coffee and croissants in the lounge for us.
Staff: Were very pleasant and most spoke at least some if not excellent English.
Grounds: It was lovely to walk through the gardens and vegetable patch. The tennis courts did not look like they had been used in quite a while. We sat outside one afternoon and enjoyed a drink on the patio.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a unique experience outside of a major centre. It is close enough to other towns and amenities, that if you do not want to eat dinner at the hotel at the end of a long day of site seeing, there are other options 10 minutes away. Our rooms did not have air-conditionning, but it cooled off enough at night to allow us to open the windows and get air flowing. There were no bugs either which pleasantly surprised us.

Just the place to stay on our last night in France. Close enough to Calais to get to the tunnel easy enough, but far enough away to still feel on holiday. Full of old fashioned charm and a very pleasant place to stay.
