Our goal was to find a place to get away from the daily grind and this was what we expressed to our travel agent. Initially, we were steered in the direction of the usual, rather ordinary holiday experience; staying at a large beach side resort in Phuket. After almost committing to this idea, we stumbled across a spectacular photo in a travel brochure of a private pool villa perched high on a hilltop overlooking the sea. We immediately enquired about this place and
were advised that this resort was a work in progress and located on a relatively unknown island. However, we still took the plunge and booked our stay. Reading past reviews certainly helped us develop the right frame of mind before our arrival. In hindsight the small concerns we had were totally unfounded as this place far exceeded our expectations.
We were picked up from a stopover resort in Phuket. Transport arrived promptly and the driver was very courteous, a great start. We arrived early at the marina for the speedboat transfer and expected to be left to our own devices. To our surprise, for the 15 mins we had to wait, we were treated to a complimentary coffee and cake at a beautiful European café, which we thought was a really nice touch to the transfer experience. The boat ride from the marina to Koh Yao Yai was a short and pleasant one with a very competent and friendly crew at the helm. The water was calm and we encountered some stunning rock formations along the way.
The welcome at the resort was warm and friendly. After a quick check-in with a fabulous watermelon mocktail, we were taken to our villa on a charismatic wooden shuttle, another nice touch. Once we arrived at the villa, we were given a brief but detailed tour of the residence. This moment also confirmed the authenticity of the photos in the original travel brochures. The well-appointed villa had a spacious layout, beautiful wooden furnishings and a spectacular private infinity pool. The ocean views from the villa were breathtaking. The layout and surrounding foliage also ensured privacy was maintained throughout the entire residence without obscuring the views. Despite ongoing construction to complete the resort, the noise was kept to an absolute minimum.
The resort currently has only one bar and restaurant but this was not an issue. The menu was extensive and we did not have a single bad meal. During our stay, our bias was always towards trying the local delicacies but their western menu did not disappoint. We were also presented with a comprehensive breakfast spread every morning. Full compliments to the
chef and the kitchen staff. Dinners were particularly exceptional and we enjoyed a wonderful Songkran banquet while serenaded by a truly talented singing duo.
Throughout our stay, we found all the staff to be very friendly and professional. Communication was never an issue and room service enquiries were dealt with promptly. House keeping was exceptional. The level of hospitality from the general manager Lloyd also impressed us during our stay. Lloyd clearly knows how to run a luxury resort and we wish him all the best getting this resort completed and all the success thereafter.
We have no hesitation recommending this resort to anyone looking for a true getaway in luxury and we are looking for the next opportunity to revisit.
