“Brilliant Local Food”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Andrea's little osteria in Castelnuovo is a fantastic place for lunch. I have been there several times over the years and the quality of the food and the wine is excellent. Especially his dishes with Porcini are very nice, but also the selection of sausages is brilliant. This day we had the selection of everything which started with a salat made with Porcini, then tomato, sausages, cheese and a bit of sweet at the end. Andrea suggested a nice young, but spicy wine from Bolgheri to go with our food and that was excellent as well. Easting Lunch at Andrea's is defininately worth a trip just to try it. I normally swing by - even though it is easily an hour each way from Lucca - just because the food is so excellent.

“"The Happiest Day of my Life" - A member of our party”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

Our group of eight friends, scattered around the globe, met in northern Tuscany to rent a villa near Fivizzano. We visited a number of highly rated restaurants in the area, but our meal at Osteria Vecchio Mulino was hands down one of the highlights of our trip. Certainly our day in Catelnuovo di Garfagnana was the best day of our trip, and all members of our party agreed that lunch was one of the most memorable meals any of us had eaten, anywhere. We started out with a hike up to the fortress, and then wandered around the town stopping in at shops and vendors. It was market day (Thursday) so all of the shops were open, which had not been our experience in other parts of Tuscany. The hike was gorgeous, and the town had a great vibe. After a few meals that didn't meet the exacting expectations of one member of our party (who cares the most about good food), we walked into Osteria Vecchio Mulino with moderate expectations. The host Andrea was gregarious and welcoming--a showman of the foods of Tuscany. It was such a pleasure dining somewhere where the owner loves food, and wants to share his passion with others. We did the tasting of everything, starting off with prosciutto, mortadella, and other local meats, followed by local mushrooms, pate, savory items, and a cheese plate with local cheeses, honey and preserves, and then a selection of deserts. All delicious, but we never felt overstuffed, as we had experienced in some other places. The local wines we tried were also fantastic. Wines, olive oils, meats, cheeses, and other products are all available for purchase, and we took some of them home. Meals are served at a communal table, and although we had a large group, we enjoyed talking with other diners, all of whom were enjoying their meal as much as we did. Additionally, at 25 Euro a person, for a three hour lunch with lots of wine, it was the best value for the money we had on our trip.

“Wonderful experience!!!”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We got this place recommended and it was definitely worth the trip! At first sight, the restaurant looks quite simple, but this place doesn't disappoint. The host Andrea made us feel like home, and it was such a great experience! We got a large plate of mixed cheeses and cold cuts followed by a heavenly union of freshly picked rasberries served with local honey. If you go there, ask for Dai-Dai for dessert:-)

“Foodie heaven in the Tuscan Hills”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

Just had a fantastic taster menu of local , meats, cheeses and cakes served and explained at every course by affable host Andrea.

Charming authentic Italian lunch with all the background on where the local produce came from

A great little find on the back of a Telegraph article that recommended the train trip up the valley from Lucca. We will definitely be back when we're in the area again
