“Last hurrah for Mathias and Peggy”
Reviewed 1 May 2013

We had the very great pleasure of being Matthias and Peggys last guests as they have sold the chalet and are retiring. We spent three days as their guests and it turned out to be one of the funniest three days we have spent anywhere in the world. Apart from the great fun we had with our hosts, the property is superb. Our suite (large lounge, bedroom and luxurious bathroom with heated floor) was probably the best accommodation we have stayed in with great breakfasts just to finish off with. On behalf of the the reviewers who have taken the time to post reviews on this property, I would like to thank Peggy and Matthias for their untiring efforts to make all our stays memorable.

Room Tip: Choose a front facing suite foe views down the valley

We stayed at Chalet Maria Theresia for one night in August. Our stay was an accident: we were driving over the Grossglockner to Villach and somehow got the idea that because Chalet Maria Theresia is in a town called Kals am Grossglockner, it would be along the Grossglockner highway. We should have checked the map more closely: it's actually 66km RT off-route from the Grossglockner. However, it's a tiny town in a beautiful little emerald green Tyrolean valley. If you're driving over the Grossglockner from north to south, and will end up over by the Pasterze Glacier in Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, Chalet Maria Theresia is a good place to stay.

HOWEVER! Just a mile or two up the valley from the Chalet Maria Theresia someone is building a MASSIVE hotel complex - 10 stores of steel and concrete brutalism, right up on the ridge line. Once it opens, the small-town atmosphere of the valley will change forever. Do your research before booking, especially if you're hoping for an uncrowded, rural experience.

Here are the details about Chalet Maria Theresia:

- Location: beautiful rural Tyrolean valley peppered with tiny townships. If you've never been to the chalet before, try to arrive before dark as it's hard to spot at night. You must to drive past the main part of Kals about a half mile, then stay right-ish at a Y when the main part of the road veers left-ish over a bridge. There is a pole at the Y and a small sign with the hotel's name on it but it's easy to miss. You can't rely on Google maps to get here, but the GPS coordinates are 47.008891,12.64235.

- Ambience: Traditional Tyrolean chalet exterior. Can a B&B be too immaculate? This place might be. No shoes inside, every surface gleaming, pure white sofa in the sitting room, pale peachy carpeting that looks like it was installed last week (see photo), surfaces look like they were just painted yesterday.... Given that it was raining when we arrived, I was afraid to step inside lest I drip water on anything. Later we learned that Matthias had gutted and renovated the place over a 2+ year period. That sort of personal-builder attention to quality is apparent everywhere. And Peggy has decorated the place to the nines - not that it's overdone at all; quite the opposite: she's used remarkable restraint and chosen a small number of classical pieces rather than cluttering it up.

- Hosts: Peggy and Matthias are exceptionally attentive hosts. Matthias is very laid back and chatty; Peggy's rather intense and chatty. They've had careers in the hospitality industry and it shows. They met us at the door as soon as we drove up and "managed" our arrival perfectly.

- Suite: The suite was spacious and warm (literally and figuratively), and the bed was very comfortable. The living room had a balcony (see photo) looking down the valley - it would have been great to leave the doors open but we had it open for a minute and a half dozen mosquitoes flew in. There was a large TV but we never turned it on. The sofa was upholstered in pure white - I was afraid to touch it (we'd been touring in the rain). Sleep quality was great - no noise, good mattress. The bed sheets were really nice but the duvet felt like polyester. Plenty of nice, fluffy pillows.

- Bathroom: very shiny and spacious, with ornate rust tiles, a towel warmer, and a lot of light. Did I mention shiny? There was a religious stature ensconced in the wall directly behind the toilet, to watch over you and bless whatever you did when you sat down, I guess (see photo). Given the price and the hotel's overall quality, I was surprised that there were no small bottles of bathing products in the room - I recommend that the innkeepers add this amenity. Towels were plentiful, soft, plush, and fresh. There was a large-ish window in the bathroom that had no curtain. We could only hope that it looked out onto a private area.

- Breakfast: large selection of meats and cheeses and plenty of breads, fruits, and other options. We did get seated at a table with another couple, and that ended up being fine (sometimes it is; sometimes it isn't, yanno?). There was an awkward moment at one point: I wanted some more coffee, and asked for it, and Peggy told me I could get up and get it myself. It didn't look self-service - the beverage area looked as if it might be a staff-only area.... anyway, I ended up feeling a little weird about it, as if I'd asked for her to serve me when I shouldn't, and I'd been reprimanded. Sorry Peggy - just didn't know your protocol. You may want to tell the guests as you seat them: "If you'd like anything, please help yourself. Breakfast is self-service."

- Peggy and Matthias recommended we eat dinner at the Kalser Kulinarium (see photos), in the center of town. They were happy to make a reservation for us. It looked like a super casual diner, but our dinners were delicious and fresh. Thank you, Kalser Kulinarium, for the lovely meal.

We've been on our Porsche trip at Matze's and Peggy's place and had a perfect time. The renopated hotel is wonderful, veeery clean and has interesting funiture and belongings in antique style...and do not give the impression of being to "heavy". Rooms are great, lovely decorated and very quiet.
We had a great evening with Peggy and Matze and their friends und will definitley come back.
A defintly great place to stay...do not hesitate to go there!!

This is a spectacular boutique property whose owners go out of their way to make it an unforgettable experience. We can't say enough about Peggy and Matthias - they welcomed us in such a personal way - we were amazed. Peggy gave me a tour of the 4 rooms - each is unique and filled with both modern and antique touches - very upscale decorations - modern bathrooms, comfortable bed, lovely balcony. Breakfast was lovely - with variety each of the mornings. We had always wanted to stay in Kals but never before could find a 4-star property. We can recommend this property without hesitation. You won't regret staying there!

We were warmly greeted by the proprietors whose personalities added to the experience. The room was uniquely decorated with antique pieces and art, yet was very up to date and comfortable. Beautifully tiled bathroom was spacious with large tub, shower and double sink. Mattress and pillows unusually comfortable. Good lighting for reading in bed. Had a balcony with a view of Kals and the snow covered mountains. There are only four rooms so the schedule is flexible. Had separate seating areas for breakfast so you did not sit at a community table. Optional dinner with other guests was relaxed and friendly and we enjoyed it. Guests are asked to remove their shoes at the door and wear slippers provided while inside. We plan to return.

Chatel Maria Theresia is one of best hotels (B&B) that we have stayed during our two and a half week trip across Austria. Hosts Peggy and Matthias were a very warm and friendly. Their hospitality was the best, that i have seen. They gave use good advice on the activities around Kals and restaurants nearby.

I think they had 4 rooms in total. All rooms were spotless and filled with beautiful antiques. Bathroom had both shower and a tub. It had a beautiful view from the tub. The hotel overlooks the mountains (check my pics). My room had a flat screen TV with Cable - so you get all English channels. Very comfortable beds.

The cable car is just 10 min walk from the hotel (if you have a car, it should not be a problem).

Wifi is free and had very good speeds. I did use Skype for my laptop to make phone calls and it worked great.

Breakfast was plenty and had good choices.

Prices were nominal. You can write to them directly for a discount.

We would definitely stay their again. Thanks Peggy and Matthias

This hotel is well worth visiting. Although not on the main track, it is a beautiful place to be with views over the Blauspitze and surrounding mountains. The hosts Peggy and Matthias make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. They make sure your every need is filled. The rooms are very well presented and it's so quiet at night you can't do anything else but sleep like a baby! The meals provided are very good and it's nice to enjoy them woth the other guests.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Many thanks for the hospitality.
