We stayed in Culla Cottage for a week in June 2017. The cottage had been an old blackhouse that the owner's father had lived in and it had been beautifully and lovingly restored. We enjoyed looking through the photo album showing the different stages of restoratiion. The cottage was very comfortable, cosy, and amazingly spacious. The fireplace in the lounge with woodburning stove was beautiful. The cottage was very well equiped and made an excellent holiday cottage. It's situation on Benbecula meant we were within easy reach of North and South Uist and spent a day on Barra.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Culla Cottage. The location being central in the Uists was excellent for travelling about. The renovation of this black house has been carried out with so much care and love! A lot of thought has gone into keeping the traditional design whilst providing a modern interior without spoiling the character. We were met on arrival by Donald who was very friendly and approachable and made us feel welcome. The beds and furniture were comfy and the cottage was equipped with everything you could need including a very nice welcome pack which was much appreciated. The garden is a lovely place to sit out on one of the benches provided to enjoy a picnic or listen to the birds.Thank you and keep up your excellent standards!
Yes it really is that perfect! The cottage is renovated to an exceptional standard and the quality of fixtures and fittings are first class.
The communication through the booking process with Donald was efficient and friendly and upon arrival was met by the owner who welcomed us and left a lovely welcome pack ;) The other reviews pretty much sum up our experience and it is rare that you find such a place that exceeds expectations.
Culla Bay is at the bottom of the road (I say Road it's quiet track) literally turn left out of the cottage and a 2 minute walk. We have a very active Spaniel and she was in heaven for a week she has sulked since she got home. The garden is fully enclosed so perfect for taking your pet.
The location is perfect for exploring the island and I would recommend both heading south for Eriskay and North for the two beaches at Berneray with West beach being the largest. I also would recommend the heritage centre museum where you get a real understanding of Uist and it's history. There are so many nice little beaches just pull up and go explore.
After being in Skye the week before in a similar thatched Blackhouse it was a very different holiday. For me I loved Uist for the beaches whilst the husband preferred Skye for the dramatic scenery but we both agreed that Culla Cottage was unbeatable and possibly one of the nicest properties we have stayed in.
Ps try the smokehouses on Uist for seafood and for crafts Puffin Studios are quite cute and unique.
We can hardly believe it is just over a week since we left Culla Cottage after enjoying a lovely week there, even the weather was kind to us except on the last morning when the unwanted rain came while loading up the car!!!! This small well restored family cottage is comfy, cosy and dog friendly and in a quiet location with a lovely beach within 2 minutes walk, what more do you need!! I wish we had stayed a bit longer, perhaps another time as we would happily return. The owners are nearby and very helpful, we wish them well with the cottage that they have worked very hard on to make it what it is now.
We has a fantastic week in the Uists, staying at Culla Cottage. The cottage is well located and a great base for exploring the islands, with a beach within a stone's throw of the door.
Everything inside the cottage has been done to a really high standard - great modern kitchen and bathroom, and cosy sofas after a day of walking! The fact that Donald has restored his family's cottage makes it all the more interesting, and we enjoyed looking at photos of the project to rebuild it to its current condition.
Can't recommend this cottage highly enough - a great place to return to each day after exploring the islands!
We are just back after a great week staying at Culla Cottage. Everything you need for a relaxing stay and our dog loved the fact we were 2 minutes from the beach . Cottage has been beautifully renovated and we will certainly go back to our little bit of paradise Thanks to Donald for making us so welcome don't just look book you won't be disappointed.
We had an amazing week in Culla Cottage, a traditional cottage that has been beautifully done up and is perfect for 'hygge'! The location is superb (it's right next to a really nice beach) and ideal for exploring the different islands. The Balivanich town has a small but well-stocked supermarket and is only a few minutes drive away. The beaches on the islands are truly spectacular; we especially liked the west beach on Berneray. Other highlights included climbing Beinn Mhor (the highest point on South Uist) and a day trip to Barra (bring your bikes!).
Donald was such a nice and welcoming host. On our arrival, there was some smoked salmon in the fridge and a small hamper with local goodies. Donald also bought us an OS map, when we told him we wanted to climb Beinn Mhor. Overall we can't recommend this place highly enough and we hope to be back soon!
