We decided to go after reading good comments left in our guest book at the barn we were staying at. We arrived as a party of 11 including 5 children under 7, we sat in the garden and all went to order, after ordering our 3 family could not order for another 15 minutes as theycl only had the barmaid ( who looked extremely stressed) and a chef working, 5 members of the party decided to go elsewhere as after 20 minutes of waiting at the bar to be told they would have to wait another 15 minutes to order they felt it was unacceptable. We stayed and after the disappointed of having things missing/unavailable on the menu, like beans?! Our food arrived, we all ordered sandwiches apart from my kids, 2x sausage and mash, all food arrived but we had to remind the barmaid we ordered 2 x sausage and mash so she went to get the other only to return saying ' we have no mash or chip's. She offered replacement and gave me my money back. I asked to see the manager and was told " he is not here, he has left me in the lurch with the chef's, she gave me his mobile number listed.
I rung the manager the next day to voice my concerns to which he thought everything was acceptable, he went as far as to say we should book a table, even if we use the beer garden, for parties of 8, he also said he found it 'ridiculous' that people would not wait an extra 15 minutes to order, we challenged about my child's dinner he offered no apology and said we only can't always keep all the food on stock? He did seem proud of himself tho as he boasted he Managed to cater for 12 the next day at lunch! Well done, really well done! Awful service and overall really dis -appointing!

Amazing place. Nothing is too much trouble. Landlord is superb and is very friendly. Staff are excellent and chef is really good. Top quality food at reasonable prices. Lovely flowers at front of pub.

This hotel was such a disappointment. On arrival, the first impression wasn't good as the garden looked really neglected with numerous weeds growing through the paving stones. Despite the sign saying it was open all day we had to telephone a mobile number in order to check in even though the manager was in the building. He was friendly enough but not exactly welcoming in his manner. We were shown to room 3 which was large enough to hold a small ball. Unfortunately, yet again the impression was not too good, the cream carpet was badly stained and the furnishings were tired and outdated. However, the sheets were clean as were the towels which were also soft and fluffy. The TV was really too small for the room but the lead was long enough to move it nearer so it could be viewed from the bed. There were two easy chairs but the stuffing needed replacing and the back of one of them was very loose. In fairness, I must add that the bed was comfortable and we were not disturbed by any traffic noise.
The bathroom was also enormous but yet again first impressions were not good as there were ants running across the floor and around the wash hand basin, we discovered later that the ants were coming in from under the bath and around the water pipes. The level of cleanliness was not as good as I would have expected either. The positives, the shower had good pressure and there was plenty of hot water, the toiletries were pleasant and were replaced when used up.
The grounds around the hotel were just so sad and neglected. The sign again advertised a beer garden and children's play area but, yet again both were overgrown and uninviting, it really wouldn't have taken much to improve it, a good mow and strim would do the job.
The full English breakfast was excellent, fresh and tasty. However, the dining room, yet again left a lot to be desired. The carpet could only be described as filthy, the carnations in the badly cracked vase were dead and the vase was also daubed with ketchup. On the final morning we were more than surprised to see the manager walking round in his dressing gown, he was still so attired when we paid and checked out. We later met one of the people we had seen at the hotel and he told us the manager wasn't well, hence the dressing gown. We are sympathetic but,as we have also previously been involved in the hospitality business, we just couldn't help thinking this was too unprofessional, after all "the show must go on" no matter what.
It really wouldn't take that much effort to make this a really pleasant hotel, some steam cleaning of carpets, painting the tired furniture, some assiduous and regular gardening, dealing with the ant problem, or at least blocking all their entries to the rooms, some deep cleaning and a committed cleaner to keep it up. I feel Adnams should put some investment into the premises as I believe the poor manager must be just so daunted by it all.
To sum up,this was meant to be a birthday treat for me and, as I stated earlier, the hotel proved to be a disappointment and if we had been staying more than 2 nights we would have moved to another hotel. We enjoyed our stay in the area but it was a good thing we had visited before as there was no literature available about local facilities. I have to say that I was also more than a little surprised to see a "Trip Advisor 4 Star 2014" sticker on the door.
Last thing, the Labrador dog at the hotel, is delightful, friendly and well behaved.
I am sure you realise we would not stay again.

Room Tip: Could not recommend any rooms at the present time.

Room 1 has a very large living/sleeping area with plenty of room to move the two easy chairs into different areas for TV or Reading etc.. The furniture in general was rather tired looking and the easy chairs needed new cushions - feathers everywhere! The TV was fine but probably a little too small for viewing from the bed.

The large bathroom was fairly well laid out with a nice large radiator for hanging towels on and the fittings were fairly good too. All let down, as in virtually every place we've ever stayed, by the floor and shower edges not 'looking' clean! Why do cleaners everywhere think that mopping a floor side-to-side with a wet mop makes a floor clean? It requires hot water, cleaning product, plenty of rinsing and finally going around the edges!

Unfortunately we were called away and didn't get to stay overnight and test the beds or breakfasts.
We did have an evening meal and there was a perfectly adequate choice of menu at a reasonable price. The meal was fine.

As we were called away but had already paid for two nights B&B, we were offered the chance to return at a later date and I've no doubt we shall.

The Plough is well placed on the A12 for visiting this area of East Anglia - the charming towns of Beccles, Bungay, Southwold etc. and slightly further away, but an easy drive, Norwich, Ipswich and Woodbridge.

Room Tip: The rooms are set out in a small courtyard area. It appears others have had problems with room 4 - w...

If we hadn't of already paid and got 2 nights B&B for the price of one we would not of stayed in room 4. First impressions were not good and on further inspection of the bathroom it only got worse. We were greeted with the most horrendously stained carpet I have ever seen to be told that they were aware and were replacing next week!!! The decor was drab and everything old and grubby. The bed however was lovely and comfortable and the traffic noise not a problem. The bathroom again looked unclean with marks around the toilet base. My partner was nearly "killed" in the shower!! The shower head is heavy and falls from the support bracket so must just be held by hand. Again shower looked unclean with the filthy grout. It's a shame as the shower was powerful and the hot always lovely and hot. The bath was large and deep and filled very quickly. The soap, shampoo and shower gel were nice. Both rooms are really spacious and could be made to be really welcoming.. complete refurbishment and decoration required and then it would be worth the price asked.
The full breakfast was really tasty and couldn't fault that. We can't comment on the bar meals as we ate out on both occasions. We arrived back on the Sunday evening to find a quiz going on in the bar which we were kindly invited to join. It was run by a lovely friendly lady who apparently organises them on the first Sunday of each month. Well worth a look in..... they also served snacks of chips and pizza!! All the staff at this establishment are extremely friendly and the dog is lovely too!!

Room Tip: Do not accept room 4

We stayed here for 2 nights as a birthday treat for my partners birthday. We stayed in room 4 which was big, more like an apartment. It was overall clean, however it could do with a new carpet and the windows cleaned.
The Breakfast was adequate, although some fruit and yogurt would have been nice. All local produce eggs etc was nice.
We ate in the restaurant once during our stay and the food was good.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful including the dog Hank.
The location is ideal for visiting places on the east coast. Its right on the A12, but because the buildings are built around the courtyard you cannot hear the traffic.

Room Tip: Room 4 is large and you can't hear the traffic.

Very spacious room almost like an apartment, but unfortunately the hot water in the shower wasn't working. Friendly staff. Great breakfast with lots of locally sourced produce. Good proximity to lots of coastal attractions.
