“Historic and original”

Castle is in its original state and under some restoration. An easy horse ride up the castle is interesting. Restaurants nearby offers good value lunch.

“Imposing castle but a hike to get there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

This is a wonderful castle set brooding above the village of Karlstejn. It is a solid thirty minute walk from the carpark to the castle and it is up hill all the way. The way up is crowded with souvenir stores, galleries, restaurants and fiacres. There are wonderful views from the wall walk although most of the castle can only be accessed as part of a tour.
There are numerous English tours throughout the day. Alas photography is not allowed inside despite the rooms being sparsely furnished. We must compliment our tour guide who was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we learnt plenty. The tour covered the Knights Hall which contained the one weapon remaining in the castle. There was the panelled Audience Hall and the Lesser and Greater Towers. This tour did not take in the Chapel but we got to see extracts of the gold finery here.
The Clock Tower and Well Tower now contain shops and lead to some of the battlements offering fine views. Overall an enjoyable visit.

“Interesting castle tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

As other reviewers have mentioned its a very easy day trip from Prague with the drive taking roughly 45 minutes. Car parking is at the bottom of the hill and it's a roughly 30 minute walk up hill to the castle which passes by a number of restaurants and shops. While the walk is uphill it's not to taxing.

The castle itself can only be viewed by taking a tour. There were four different tour options available in a number of languages and were running quite regularly. Each tour varies in length and cost. The information on the tour we did (tour1) was overwhelming at times but interesting none the less. The tour guide we had was very good and had great enthusiasm.

The castle itself is extensive and well maintained and definitely worth a visit.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

We took the train from Prague to Karlstejn station. Walk from the station to the town of Karlstejn, and then walk up the hill to the castle. Picteresque town. Go on guided tour through the castle. This is a day trip from Prague that is definately worth it!
