“friendly place in sleepy and quiet village”
Reviewed 10 April 2012

I spent there a weekend after a couple of days in Barcelona. The hotel (and Cerbere) is very quiet and good for people tired after the stay in a loud city. Receptionist was very helpful and nice. I really wanted to speak French but after few words there was no problem with switching into English. The hotel itself is small (I would say narrow), situated on the cliff, with an awesome view from the window. Room was very simple (recently renovated I think) but clean and rather comfortable. The bathroom was definitely old-fashioned but it didn't matter. Small stony beach was 3 minutes way down (ves! down!) the hotel. if you don't like stones, there was also sandy beach in the "centre" of the village. I can't say anything about the breakfast - we didn't take it. we decided to do shopping in a local little "supermarket" Casino. In the village there are 2-3 reastaurants - good food for reasonable price (snails, local fish and wine, crema catalana) nut you have to book a table earlier if you want to have a marina view .
If I ever went back to the French-Spanish border for a cople of days, I would choose Cerbere and Hotel la Vigie again.

Wow! For a hotel with a VIEW stay here.
You are literally on the "Med".
On arrival we were welcomed with courtesy and, even given my brilliant French, the woman on duty recognised that I was not 100% fluent and helped with her perfect English.
The breakfast was great and all the staff went out of their way to help.

The spot is great, the flow needs some caring, but definately worth while to follow up. Restaurant is closed now, redoing the place from Octobre. The village could use 1 or 2 better restaurants.
Great sun bathing and snorkling and just be anonimously strawling.
Have a banyuls, Catalonian white wine or a Pastis on the little square while local folks are dancing.

Suspended impossibly on a cliff of shear rock, La Vigie is a wonderful glimpse into the architecture (and facilities) of late 50's? the receptionist didn't know.
Basic, forget it if you are craving a trouser press. Plentiful hot water, power shower(water pressure, not style). Wardrobe thin as a slice of cheese, and...not much else, no silly bad repro prints of sea scenes for the sake of it, but the view.......
The view! more like being in the view. We slept with windows wide open, the sound of the water slooshing onto the rocks, the sea really is at your feet. Wonderful.
Superb terrace and dining room with original wooden anchor light fittings.
Breakfast...well lets say my pretty easy going husband was a little peeved. More jam please, fresh croissants, not tesco style. But its worth it to sit on the terrace.
Its a friendly base to explore the region with its wonderful wild coastline, a pleasant stroll into the town itself, and an interesting access access to the sea via a winding staircase path next to the hotel.

  • Liked — The view and the building
  • Disliked — The croissants

My wife and I first saw Cerbère in the summer of 2001 on our way to Barcelona. Cerbère is the very last town in France before the Spanish border on the Mediterranean Sea. We took a picture out the window, and said it looked like a delightful little place.

A couple hours later, after our backpack was stolen in the Barcelona train station and the Spanish police met and exceeded all stereotypes -- instead of patrolling the high-crime venue of the Barcelona train station, they were literally all sitting in a back room, playing cards and smoking cigarettes! -- we decided to 'screw Spain' and spend our money in France.

And that's how we ended up in Cerbère for the night! We called a taxi from the oversized train station at the top of a hill, and Martine (who seems to be the only cab driver in the village) suggested La Vigie (two stars). We were not disappointed -- it was the perfect antidote to our frazzled nerves.

La Vigie is located on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on the road leading south from the village into Spain (the border is about 3 km away). Moderately priced (43 euro with breakfast, 35 euro without), the hotel features spectacular views of the Mediterranean cove that juts inland at Cerbère. Every room has an ocean view with a balcony. Our first night there, we propped our outside doors open with chairs so we could hear the rush of the waves as we went to sleep. Unfortunately, the hotel is situated so that the sun comes up over a nearby hill rather than over the water.

The hotel features 18 rooms (all named after regions of France, not numbered). The rooms all have ensuite toilet/shower (our showerhead malfunctioned on our first trip there), phone and cable TV (the Bullfighting Channel from Spain is hilarious). Beds are very comfortable and some rooms have a bunk bed so you can pack three or four people into the room.

There is a restaurant in the hotel on the ground floor but we didn't try it; our one bad experience here was when we tried to order one meal for the two of us and split it, the chef refused! Other than that, we found the staff extremely friendly and kind.

We stayed at La Vigie again in 2004. We decided to give Barcelona another chance, just this time we were going to leave our luggage safe at La Vigie and take a day trip down to the city. (Barcelona was a huge waste of time.) The hotel staff were very helpful in giving us travel advice. The next morning, when we had a 6 am train to catch, the owner personally knocked on our door for our 4:30 wakeup call and made sure we were ready in time for the train.

If you're going to make the trek to Barcelona but want to avoid making yourself a baggage-laden target for its many criminals, staying in Cerbère is the perfect solution. It's only two hours by train from Barcelona. And if you're looking for a quaint, non-touristy village by the Mediterranean to relax in, Cerbère is a wonderful choice. The seafood is excellent and if you go to the first restaurant on the inland side of the road down the hill from the hotel, you can't beat the crème catalane.

There is not much "going on" in Cerbère, so if you're looking for wild parties and resort-style living, go elsewhere. The town has some boating activity and nice restaurants, and is great for walking. Don't miss the "secret tunnel" from the train station to the town. And there is something faintly ridiculous about the tiny town square with a single tree growing in the middle of it being named "La Place de la République" as if it were some monumental square in Paris. Cerbère is nothing more than your own private getaway on the Mediterranean Sea, and you can't see it any better than from La Vigie.
