One of the most amazing resorts that I have seen till date. The location and layout of the resort makes it very unique. It is a very well designed property with good spacing. The central lagoon and the birds in the area make the stay nicer. The Vembanad lake has a very calming effect. The entire staff of the resort take it upon themselves to make sure that you feel special. No stone is left unturned in order to cater to a comfortable stay. The GM of the hotel makes sure that the staff is motivated and focussed on guest satisfaction. The pool villas towards the lake have the best views of the lake. Food is very nice, local flavors are well represented on the menu. All special food requests are taken care with a smile.

Almost everything about this place is quiet and cosy and rich.

The property lies off the road which connects Cochin and Kanyakumari and its a narrow but very busy road. The driveway ends at the 150-yr old Heritage building and its own nice little well. The welcome drink was sweet coconut water.

The staff showed us around the property and it looked beautiful against the cloudy skies and lake. So the property has a lake in the centre and 2 other smaller ponds between the cottages. And of course the massive Vembanad lake is just at the back of the property. So considering the abundance of water its no surprise that there is a bird sanctuary right next door. And a lot of birds nest around the lake inside the Taj property. The problems with this can be imagined...there's tons of bird poop all over the place and in the evenings, the stench is unbearable at some sections of the property.

Our room was upgraded to the one with the outdoor shower and it was splendid! The pond at the back of our cottage had all kinds of flowers and great for photography. In the evening we went on an excruciatingly slow and boring boat ride on the Vembanad lake. And then we were served some amazing chai and snacks at the jetty.

If you dont mind trying the local cuisine, you can rest assured that the food is just wonderful! I tried 3 different things for the meals and they were all superb, authentic and tasty. If you're from Bangalore you will find the restaurant prices at par with some of the good restaurants in Bangalore, so order away!

The rains came and went and so it didnt bother us too much. If anything it just made everything cooler and greyer and more beautiful. The whole place looked very green, fresh and nice.

I just stayed for one night and it was adequate. Considering the fact that there isnt uch to do around Kumarakom, one day is all I couldve taken anyway.

Room Tip: The boat ride is very very boring...and one should definitely try the local cuisine!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback of the hotel. We are glad you had a great experience with us though for a short while. As you rightly put forth, the property becomes even more lush and green after the onset of the monsoon. All the green cover in the property stands out even more after rains.
We have chosen to be extremely close to nature in the property and that brings in its own challenges. However we try and minimise these challenges so that our guests have a beautiful time.
We look forward to welcome you back for a longer stay with us in the near future

Thanks and regards

My husband and I took the trip to Taj Kumarakom in the last week of July 2011. We stayed for 3N/4D, first at their Superior Charm Room, which is a small cottage with a sit-out overlooking the lagoon and then we were upgraded for 1N in their Premium Temptation Villa with private plunge pool.

The rooms and villas all have names of birds and the property itself is a mini kerala in itself - in that it is very green, with a bird sanctuary in walking distance and plenty of birds in the property. The Superior Charm room is spacious with a glorious sit out where you can curl up with a book and watch the rain or have hot tea with your partner.

The Premium Temptation Villa is the high end luxury suite at the property - it offers complete privacy, the plunge pool will be a hit with couples and kids alike and the rain shower is a great touch to the out-doorsy experience. The room also has gorgeous view of the Vembanad Lake and the long easy-chairs and swings add to the charm.

The breakfast buffet is however limited. The chef however is very good at the local Kerala cuisine and we enjoyed the appams, karimeens and other assorted local delicacies over lunch and dinner. While we did not try the Indian and Chinese cuisines, I did feel the continental menu was a little limited in its offering.

The hotel offers complimentary 30-45 minute boat rides on the Vembanad lake in the evenings followed by hot chaya and snacks. There is a play and activity area for kids as well.

The staff are pleasant and ever smiling. We were pampered with the upgrade, a surprise dinner setup with roses and candles and a cake to wrap up our visit.
A special mention for
Daline, one of the two ladies at the front desk and who also escorted us to our rooms - she was very pleasant and was a joy to interact with, during our stay;
Daniel, who we met up after our evening boat ride and had an informative chat;
Anand, who was very attentive and pleasant, at all our mealtimes at the restaurant
Prince, who took feedback on our stay and was also very thoughtful enough to organize the surprise dinner setup on our last night, at the hotel.

Overall, it was our first trip to Kumarakom and while the hotel, in terms of area is like a little jewel, the hospitality and the natural beauty more than makes up for its spread. Was a great stay and we look forward to the Taj on our next trip as well.

Room Tip: If you are going for the Temptation Villa with the Private Pool, choose Room No. 24 since it is the...

You have rightly potrayed the fact that each of our different categories of rooms have something different to offer and the fact that all of them are facing some water body or the other has a very calming effect along in sync with birds, trees and other flora.
We are happy that we could make your holiday memorable with our small touches.
We hope you will spread the good word and we look forward to welcome you back to the resort yet again very soon.

I think Taj Kumarakom is one of most beautifully located properties of Taj - amidst the backwaters of Kerala and the greenery and to top it all - The Kerala Charm - Really God's Own Country!
I have stayed there on official tours of the adjoining towns in Kerala and have always enjoyed my stay here. Had an experience of staying at their Villa (low season that time so they upgraded me) and also the Deluxe Room. Both had an open balcony to patches of greens leading to the huge lake around which the entire property is built! Sipping my morning cup of tea in the balcony, with the birds chirping around was tranquility personified
With my schedule, I coudldn't do much acitivities, but every day they had a big Itinerary starting from nature walks for bird watching, to backwater boat rides and probably lots of things to do for all ages. The one thing that i did witness was the local dance in the evening performed by a local troupe of young ladies dressed in traditional saris and make-up followed by a Carnatic music recital by a very proficient person
The local vareties of fish and the preparations are legandry and lived up to their reputation. Food was excellent and i really enjoyed the breakfast spread which had a separate Tea-coffee counter which also served a great South-indian Filter coffee, apart from the live counters serving fresh Dosas etc (didn't try the continental spread - but there was quite a lot of variety of that as well)
Bicycles for all ages were available (even ones with suspenders for the little ones) to move around the resort
In the evening they would light little Diyas / Deepak around the lake area - VERY BEAUTIFUL and ROMANTIC!
Didn't try the spa but I'm quite sure it would be very nice
Great place to come with kids as there was a lot of activities that they could do - you anyway would not have much to do around in the city (small city) - maybe just go around gazing at the lakes and backwaters nearby which are very very beautiful!

Room Tip: The villas are expensive, but worth the extra buck! Must stay in the Villa!!!

The property itself was above average, but no way near what you expect from Taj. Part of it is because this is the Vivanta line and not the flagship Taj line. We were debating between this hotel and the Lake Resort. We stayed 3 nights, 1 of which we ended staying a night at Spice Village in Thekkady. We stayed at one of their whirpool infinity pool villas which was a delight and the actual room was well equipped and furnished. The let downs begin to occur when it comes to their facilities. Their gym is absolutely sub par for a Taj. Their spa looks unwelcoming. Their lake area smells too strong which is a turn off during their evening classical dance performances. Additionally, their breakfast was very sloppy. There are many areas which Taj Vivanta Kumarakom can improve to justify its 4-5 star price and live up to the Taj brand. I would recommend this hotel solely for its room accommodations and helpful staff, not for the facilities itself.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review of the property. We are sorry that we could not match upto your expectations in certain areas.
As you would have experienced ,we have converted a 140 year existing structure and the surroundings into a hotel thereby bringing in some limitations.
However ,we are going in for a progressive renovation and shall endevour to further improve upon the existing facilities.
We do look forward to welcoming you back whenever you plan a visit to this destination

I visited this beautiful lake side property with my wife and 1 year daughter and it was exactly as expected.. "perfect relaxation destination". On my four day visit it did rain for most of the time (it was peak rainy season) but the true wonder of Kerala is the rain, lush green and pristine. We were booked in the Allure villa facing the Lilly pond, which is bigger in size and advisable if kid along. Good pretty comfy room. Staff were all courteous n helpfull. The food was good but I would strongly recommend the local cuisine. One more thing to must do is an early morning canal boat cruise (which the hotel will help you in arranging) which would take you to the paddy fields and villages nearby. Pls have the very speacial local drink toddy (coconut liquer) on the boat ride and yes early morning. Life is good here.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review of the property. We are glad you did enjoy the Kerala rains with us thoroughly. The property with its wide extent of greenery becomes even more plush during the rains.
We are glad you enjoyed the local cuisine in particular. The local cuisine has wide offerings both in vegetarian food options as also the non- vegetarian food options, especially the fish.
As you rightly mentioned, the resort is perfectly suited for 'Complete Relaxation'
We look forward to welcoming you back for another vacation whenever you are in the need of a break

This year we decided to vacation in Kerala and chose Kumarakom because of its backwaters and proximity to the Beach (Marari Beach Allepey). Taj is always our favourite place as we always get excellent service in most all Taj Resorts and this time was no different.

We were initially given the room in the main building above the dining however it did not have any view (heritage Room) we were boxed in. But as soon as we complained we were moved to one of the cottages which was great.

As the main theme of our Holiday was to relax this was a great place to do that the kayal rides(backwaters), the cycling around the property, the chai kada concept that they have every evening and the lamp lighting and dance after dark all added wonderfully to the whole experience.

If there is one shortfall then I would say that one does not have a view of the backwaters from any of the rooms, the property faces the waterfront at one end.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to have given you a memorable holiday experience considering that you are a regular patron of the Taj.
Thank you for mentioning the Diya lighting ceremony because it is a very unique ceremony wherein ladies from the locality light up more than 700 lamps every evening around the lagoon bringing a different aura to the whole hotel.
We are also happy to note that you enjoyed the service and the other recreational activities.
We look forward to welcome you back to the resort yet again very soon
