“Lovely Hotel, Town and Island”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We spent a wonderful June week at the Pericles. The hotel is set in countryside on the road into Sami, with beautiful views to mountains and sea. Lots of wildlife and good walking in the area if you are into that sort of thing - which we are. Little owls hunted outside our balcony each night and we awoke to the sound of goat bells in the morning. Lots of storage space in good sized rooms.
The hotel is well run with friendly staff who keep the place spotless. The design of the building includes lots of small seating areas where people gathered to chat, enjoy the view and catch or avoid the sun. This encouraged people to mix and share stories - I've never talked to so many different people on holiday before. The pleasant bar was well used by guest on their way into town or on their way back before bed. Prices much the same as in Sami.
The pool is set slightly away from the building, surrounded by fields, with a nice pool bar. Plenty of space for lots of guests.
Sami is an attractive port set in a wide bay where the Mainland and Italian ferries arrive on the Island. Hence there is a good mix of tourists and locals - not just Brits. The taverners are excellent and good value. We went to the Dolfin, Mermaid, Faros plus a very attractive taverna at the other end of the bay next to the lake. All were fantastic.
If you are into a relaxed Greek holiday, this is the place for you. We will definitly be back.

Room Tip: All have good view, but upper facing sea is probably the best

We had 1 week at the Pericles hotel in June and we wished we could've stayed longer. The whole island is lovely, and the harbour at Sami where all the restaurants are was great to walk to in the evenings. Hiring a car for a couple of days is a good idea, especially as the island has some amazing views from the mountain roads. We'll definitely be going back to this hotel.....we love it.

I have written on official complaint about her because she was absent most of the time. We had a start of 2am from the UK and then a 2 hour transfer. She didn't come on the drop off but told us that the meet and greet would be at 6pm. We thought that would be OK because we have stayed at the Pericles before and so could have our meal there immediately after. Oh dear, the restaurant is no longer open in the evenings. As my husband is diabetic we had to go into Sami to get him some food and we waited around to tell her this. She finally showed at 6.20pm and then had the right hump because we couldn't stay for her meeting. As a result, she made no further effort to tell us anything about the island (she had no idea we had been there before). We did find out during the week that Thomas Cook will no longer be doing holidays there so in future we can make our own arrangements if we want to go back. She wasn't around on the Friday to tell anyone what time we were being collected for the transfer back to the airport either and the notices in the lobby stated we would be advised 24 hours prior to departure. We rang the number that is meant to be manned 24/7 but there was no answer. The hotel is still great though and we love it. The Mermaid is the best place to eat down in Sami.

Pericles hotel is a small, friendly ,family run hotel just outside the main harbour of Sami. The rooms are adequate in size with air conditioning which only runs from July- September. It can be very hot in June so it's worth taking a fan for the room. The bathroom is small with a tiny shower cubicle complete with plastic shower curtain and hand held shower. The shower is surprisingly fierce for its size ! There are no hair dryers in the rooms but one is available at reception if you forget to pack your own. The towels are soft and changed every couple of days. The rooms are fairly clean but a few dust bunnies lurk beneath the dresser and beds. I found a flower seed in the drawer of the bedside cupboard!
Reception at the Pericles is 24 hours and the lady called Nina speaks English . The boss also speaks a bit of English, enough to get by. Some people describe him as dour, but it really is just his way and he is perfectly amiable if you choose to smile and say good morning to him. He runs a tight ship but so would if it was my business.
Breakfast is a fairly basic affair of cold hard boiled eggs, toast, ham, cheese and yoghurt with honey if desired. You can pay 3 euros if you fancy something hot like fried eggs etc.
The pool is open from 0900 until 1900. The pool / snack bar closes at 1700 when the hotel bar takes over until midnight. The T.V. Is on in reception until midnight after which time it is turned off and the area must be cleared by 0030. This is fine for most folks and to be fair, he kept the TV on during the World Cup matches until they ended. As Kefallonia is 2 hours ahead of the UK this was quite late at times.
There are safes available at reception but none in the rooms. There are no refrigerators In the rooms but you can rent one for 20 euros a week. They are not particularly efficient because the ambient temperatures are very high, but, it's enough to chill down your drinks . If you want ice you may have to wait a few days !!!!
Some rooms overlook the car park, others have mountain and / or sea views. The car park has a pretty fountain which is illuminated at night and goes off around 1130 pm.
All in all, for its cost, the Pericles is a clean, well-run family hotel within approx. 20-30 minutes walk of the harbour. We stayed for 2 weeks and grew to like the place very much. We wouldn't hesitate to return. I have tried to be as factual as possible with this review. If you want 5 star luxury don't stay here but if, like us, you are happy with a clean, safe environment, then please stay here. It's perfectly adequate for w couple of weeks in Greece.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room over the breakfast room unless you don't mind being woken up at 0700 . H...

Returned from the Pericles last week, having stayed four times previously since 2007. I can only echo the well chosen comments of recent reviewers. I love Kefalonia, Sami and the Pericles. Sami is a fantastic base for those wanting a quiet and typically authentic 'Greek' experience. No bucket and spade, egg and chips, disco boom-boom to be found here, thank goodness! If you want quiet, peace, simple living, fantastic weather, fabulous food and a genuine friendly welcome, then look no further.

The Pericles is your typical 3* Greek hotel. Simple, spotlessly clean and functional. The odd 'quirk' here and there (namely the showers) but that all adds to your overall (very pleasant)holiday experience. Breakfast is ample and adequate (bread, cereals, cheese, ham, eggs, honey, yoghurt, cake, juice, tea and coffee). Stelios, the owner, is friendly and helpful. The dining room and reception staff always greet you with a smile and make you feel genuinely welcome. It was lovely to see Nina again....still warm, friendly and helpful as ever.

Dolphins Taverna on the harbour-front always has, and always will be my favourite. Dimitri and Kiki welcome you with open arms and the food is plentiful and delicious with plenty of choice. Dimitri will always do his best to cater for different dietary needs. Captain Corelli's is great for an open or toasted sandwich at lunchtime and Nea Sami (cake shop next to Dolphins) serve the most delicious and tempting cakes, coffee, tea, beer (whatever you want). Do try their baklava...I haven't found better!

Cats...Whilst there, we, amongst others, became very fond of the two cats living by the bins (opposite the new Melissani Taverna)...the big ginger and white male and the small black and white cat (whom we called 'Bindy'). We sincerely hope that people continue to look in on her and feed (and water) her as we did twice a day whilst we were there. We took her to the newly opened vets in Sami last Monday (23rd June) and paid for her to be examined, as she had a bad chest/lungs/wheeze. The vet was very kind and gave her a long-acting anti-biotic, flea and worming treatment. He also confirmed that she was pregnant and promised that he would visit her again in the short term to administer further medication. We also contacted the two main (small) animal trusts/charities on the island (KAT & ARK) who are doing wonderful work treating, feeding (especially in winter), neutering and spaying as many dogs and cats as their limited funds allow. So whilst enjoying your holiday in this wonderful paradise, please spare a thought and a little food and water for these deserving and beautiful creatures, especially our little 'Bindy'. We would be very grateful if anyone can update us over the coming months as to her welfare.

Enjoy Kefalonia and especially beautiful Sami and the welcoming Pericles. The island is beautiful with many lovely places to visit, Assos, Fiscardo, Argostoli (see the turtles living and playing in their natural habitat) and St Georges Castle, but to name a few.

I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Sea or mountain views from most rooms... The view of the bay of Sami and Ithaka is special though.

We traveled to kefalonia and stayed at the Pericles for the first time this June with my parents. My husband and I had been to kefalonia before but never to Sami, and as my parents had stayed here several times before we thought we'd give it a go.
We can't wait to rebook - we were talking about rebooking before we even got home!! Firstly, it's immaculately clean - nothing is ever unclean or out of place. The staff are so warm and welcoming, always on hand for advice or help.
It depends what you want out of a holiday as to weather or not this is the right place for you. We like to get out & about & explore as well as including a few days dossing by the pool for good measure. This was perfect for this. The local port of Sami is beautiful & full of charm. It's an easy 5-10 minute walk from the hotel (although not lit at night - take a torch!) the food locally is delicious and reasonable (I'd recommend Farohs and Riviera) and Anti-Samos beach (10 min car ride) is a beach you just cannot miss. I just can't wait to rebook, I felt so relaxed and happy here I would (& frequently do!) recommend this to anyone :)

We stayed here in May for the third time. We love Sami and the Pericles but it really is starting to get tatty round the edges. It as a great place when we first stayed here 12 years ago. The problem is it's not kept up with the times and the standards of cleanliness are slipping. The loungers round the pool were really dirty, covered in bird droppings. How much effort does it take to wash them? The shower curtains were really old and showed signs of mould. Please replace them.
Moaning aside, this is still a great hotel, it's just that with a bit more effort it could be perfect.
Go to Sami, it's the best place on Kephalonia and makes up for the small faults of the Pericles.

Room Tip: Try to get the second floor for better views
