We've just returned from our sixth visit to the Sami Beach Hotel ...and we are people who usually don't go to the same place twice .Now, and for the last six years, we book the Sami Beach first and then decide where else in the world we want to go! The reason for this is very simple ( and it's the same reason that hundreds of 'regulars' book each year too) ; the Sami Beach is somewhere very special.
It's important for potential guests to realise what it is that they are coming to, so that there's not a disparity between what they're expecting and what they receive. It's not a modern, impersonal 5 star hotel with lots of facilities You can get that elsewhere on the island if that's what you're looking for. What it is is a traditional greek hotel of a certain era and culture where hospitality and personal service really mattered. It really matters still at the Sami Beach - and it really works.Periklis, Yiannis and Maryann do everything they can to make guests feel welcome.
I was disappointed to read some of the comments in an earlier ( mainly negative ) review because I'm not aware that the hotel routinely provides beach towels ( unless perhaps in an emergency if guests haven't brought any ).So perhaps the hotel is being criticised for their helpful actions. In fact new sunbeds ( with adjustable backsupports) arrived in the middle of June , as part of the constant maintenance of the hotel. It just goes to show that you can't please all the guests all the time! Certainly the room towels are fluffy, not threadbare, and are changed daily. The breakfasts at the Sami Beach are actually a favourite feature for us - they are traditional greek breakfasts of the highest order ( but not a fried breakfast) where there is a plentiful supply of fresh breads of various kinds, yogurt and honey, fresh fruit from the garden picked and cut up virtually in front of you , a hot dish each day, and lots of eggs, ham and cheese, home made cake etc , with as much fresh coffee as you can drink. In the breakfast room Elianna and Soula constantly bring fresh coffee to your table and Yiannis or Elianna exhort us to smile by informing us there's no rain ( or snow!) forecast for the day compared to the weather forecast for home .....most people recognise this to be warm- hearted and tongue in cheek. It has the desired effect of making you smile( though clearly a previous reviewer didn't like this).
My husband had a birthday while we were there and although we hadn't made this known the staff discovered through the presence of cards in our room. Very quickly a bottle of bubbly , flowers and birthday cake were brought to our room. This is all over and above what one would expect from a hotel and is genuinely meant to be a gesture of hospitality.
The vast majority of guests really love all that the Dorizas family do to make you feel relaxed and welcome. We love everything about the hotel, particularly the fact that it is traditional and very well maintained. It is actually kept spotlessly clean both inside and out and there is a lot of TLC going on all the time. Obviously its location is wonderful . If you're looking for an experience of the greek hospitality which was famous in the 60s but is almost dying out on the bigger islands or more modern hotels, look no further. The Sami Beach is the right place to be .....just as it is for us and hundreds of returning guests every year .
