“Somewhere very special......”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

We've just returned from our sixth visit to the Sami Beach Hotel ...and we are people who usually don't go to the same place twice .Now, and for the last six years, we book the Sami Beach first and then decide where else in the world we want to go! The reason for this is very simple ( and it's the same reason that hundreds of 'regulars' book each year too) ; the Sami Beach is somewhere very special.
It's important for potential guests to realise what it is that they are coming to, so that there's not a disparity between what they're expecting and what they receive. It's not a modern, impersonal 5 star hotel with lots of facilities You can get that elsewhere on the island if that's what you're looking for. What it is is a traditional greek hotel of a certain era and culture where hospitality and personal service really mattered. It really matters still at the Sami Beach - and it really works.Periklis, Yiannis and Maryann do everything they can to make guests feel welcome.
I was disappointed to read some of the comments in an earlier ( mainly negative ) review because I'm not aware that the hotel routinely provides beach towels ( unless perhaps in an emergency if guests haven't brought any ).So perhaps the hotel is being criticised for their helpful actions. In fact new sunbeds ( with adjustable backsupports) arrived in the middle of June , as part of the constant maintenance of the hotel. It just goes to show that you can't please all the guests all the time! Certainly the room towels are fluffy, not threadbare, and are changed daily. The breakfasts at the Sami Beach are actually a favourite feature for us - they are traditional greek breakfasts of the highest order ( but not a fried breakfast) where there is a plentiful supply of fresh breads of various kinds, yogurt and honey, fresh fruit from the garden picked and cut up virtually in front of you , a hot dish each day, and lots of eggs, ham and cheese, home made cake etc , with as much fresh coffee as you can drink. In the breakfast room Elianna and Soula constantly bring fresh coffee to your table and Yiannis or Elianna exhort us to smile by informing us there's no rain ( or snow!) forecast for the day compared to the weather forecast for home .....most people recognise this to be warm- hearted and tongue in cheek. It has the desired effect of making you smile( though clearly a previous reviewer didn't like this).
My husband had a birthday while we were there and although we hadn't made this known the staff discovered through the presence of cards in our room. Very quickly a bottle of bubbly , flowers and birthday cake were brought to our room. This is all over and above what one would expect from a hotel and is genuinely meant to be a gesture of hospitality.
The vast majority of guests really love all that the Dorizas family do to make you feel relaxed and welcome. We love everything about the hotel, particularly the fact that it is traditional and very well maintained. It is actually kept spotlessly clean both inside and out and there is a lot of TLC going on all the time. Obviously its location is wonderful . If you're looking for an experience of the greek hospitality which was famous in the 60s but is almost dying out on the bigger islands or more modern hotels, look no further. The Sami Beach is the right place to be .....just as it is for us and hundreds of returning guests every year .

It's a few years since I visited the hotel Sami beach and it still brings back brilliant memories. The family were some of the nicest people I have ever met and the breakfast was beautiful. The resort is gorgeous the hotel is lovely inside and out. There's not that much to do there but it doesn't matter because it is just so beautiful. I have been all over the world but the hotel Sami beach still remains one of my favourite places

Stayed here a few years ago. Lovely hotel, very friendly owners, made us very welcome. The breakfast was really good and plenty of choice. Will definitely go back when we get the chance. We love Sami and the hotel is in a beautiful spot and only a short walk away from the centre of Sami.

We visited Sami Beach Hotel once again and as always had a wonderful time.
The hotel has character, its the sort of place I love, owners and staff who cannot do enough to make your holiday memorable and fun. a setting that is just beautiful, people returning year after year from a host of countries because they enjoy the individual attention to detail that Sami Beach provides.
The hotel is constantly updating things and improving their facilities, new bathrooms with modern walk-in showers have been fitted in all the rooms over the winter. The breakfasts are varied and of a good quality. The gardens are well kept, the pool is superb, the car parking space is large but most of all the owners and the staff do all in their power to ensure that everyone who stays at the hotel has a good time.

Room Tip: You can choose a sea view or a mountain view, both equally lovely

This hotel would be perfect for Gordon Ramsay's attention on a "nightmare" programme!

On the plus side, the owners are well-meaning and kind, and the hotel was very clean. The location was also good for exploring the island by car, as it is central.

However, it was as if it had been in decline for some time, for example:

- the towels in the bathroom were really old and hard
- the towels provided for use by the pool were threadbare, very small, and had things like disney characters on (I wonder whether they had just been left by previous guests?)
- the sun loungers by the pool were not adjustable (only flat)
- the breakfast was really disappointing (poor quality bread/croissants, only sickly sweet concentrated juice, the fresh fruit was stingily chopped into tiny tiny pieces and there wasn't much of it)
- the owner and his daughter tried to be very friendly, but entered the breakfast room every few minutes to shout "smile please!" at the guests, which was pretty patronising and odd, like a weird kind of summer camp!
- the decor was very basic, it looked like it hadn't been updated or modernised for about 30 years
- the walls were so thin we could hear the couple next door snoring and going to the toilet

Overall the hotel was overpriced for what was delivered.

Doriza, Owner at Sami Beach Hotel, responded to this review, 10 July 2014
Dear LucyAnna2010,

The Sami Beach Hotel is a 3 star family hotel that is in business since 1988. The hotel is open from May until October every year and during the remaining months of the year we always do rennovation works to keep our hotel in a decent condition. Over these years and with personal efforts as a family we have managed to built a very happy clientele that returns back year after year.
Certainly it is not possible to make everyone happy with the services we offer and we will accept your feedback and do our best to improve our services. We cannot accept however that we are a suitable hotel for a Gordon Ramsey show. The title of your review will certainly attract attention, however, this is not the case for the Sami Beach Hotel and the best evidence for this is majority of positive reviews and the Ceritificates of Excellence our hotel has received over these years.

Yours sincerely
The Doriza Family

The addition of new bathrooms has made this excellent hotel even better (if that is possible). It is almost like staying with a family as everyone is so helpful and friendly. It is small wonder that the majority of guests return year after year. Any other comments I could make would just be repeating all the other excellent reviews of this hotel. Cannot be bettered!!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent. The Garden Rooms are quieter (and cheaper) but no room is noisy.
