This is an amazing place to stay. We've just got home and want to go straight back!

This hotel is located in Karavomylos which is a 10 minute stroll along the beachfront from Sami. Sami/Karavomylos is the perfect central location to explore Kefalonia from - check out the Lonely Planet where this hotel gets a mention. The rooms are clean and the towels and beds changed every day.

The hotel is located on the sea front and next door to the swanky Ionian Emerald Resort which is also owned by the same family - therefore you have access to the pool at the Ionian.

Makis and his wife Elena are very welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. Makis is everywhere! 1 minute he has a paintbrush in his hand, then he is serving up breakfast and then in the evening he serves up local Ouzo and Brandy - wonderful character. Meanwhile in the background Mama (Makis' mother) is constantly maintaining the beautiful flowers and Sakis (Makis Junior) provides plenty of entertainment mimicking his father and looking after Papa (Makis' father) - Καλό παιδί.

σας ευχαριστώ to the Filippatos family.

This is a great hotel, in a lovely location. The rooms are super clean - the towels and beds are changed regularly. The views from the front over the bay towards Ithaca are fabulous. You have access to a beautiful pool at the sister hotel next door, which has a backdrop of mountains, the sea and palm trees - and a great bar. Sami is an easy stroll with lots of great tavernas, and there are various nice beaches near to the hotel or an easy drive, including the lovely Anti Samos. Myrtos is about 30 minutes by car.

Makis, the owner of the Athina Beach is a lovely and very friendly person - he makes you feel so very welcome, and introduces you to all his friends (mostly guests who return year after year) - nothing is any trouble and the whole family are lovely - his mama is particularly lovely and smiley and really encourages you to try out Greek. The guests at the hotel are a fabulous mixture - including Italians, Greeks and English.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front with a sea view are nice, particularly on the top floors.

It is one of the best hotels we have been to, with a nice walk along the beach to Sami:
we were looking to find a nice place to eat away from center of Sami so we were surprised
to find the ideal restaurant we were looking for. There were no restaurants or bars next door across the road (where you're seated), and had a beautiful view of the sea and a small harbor where our kids could swim and play. The food was lovely and the fish was cooked well (I'm mad on fish)! My wife and kids loved the place because the owner Alex and his mother, who do all the cooking, don't chase away the cats or the odd dog that comes in, so long as they dont cause a problem (our kids love cats!). One of the best things me and my wife loved about Karnagio restaurant is that it is Greek. It feels like you have gone back in time- it looks a little shabby but it is clean and the food is good.
It is a shame when you can get tomato sauce and chicken nuggets in Greek restaurants,
when the whole point in coming to Greece is to feel you are in Greece!
To me and my family, Alex and his family run the best Greek restaurant in Sami.
If you wish to feel that you are in Greece, Karnagio restaurant is the place to eat.
Alex if your reading this save me the corner table for this month next year!

We stayed at the Athina Beach hotel during the last week of July, and I can highly recommend it. Location wise, the hotel is a 15 minute stroll along the beach front to Sami town. Makis, the owner and his wife are wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome the moment we arrived. Most of the reviews on this site mention him, and I concur with all of their comments on Makis' hospitality. His mother, Athina, is truly an inspiration, she always welcomed us with a smile and although we spoke no Greek and she spoke no English, she always stopped to say hello and say a few words in Greek. She has boundless energy - we always saw her with a mop, broom or watering her plants from morning to night. The hotel rooms are spartan, but clean. Who needs anything more when on a beach holiday. Our room had an air conditioner. We had fresh towels every two days, and all rooms have a balcony with rope where you can hang clothes to dry. The breakfast is simple, delicious yoghurt (the best I've eaten) came in it's own bucket, boiled eggs, ham, cheese, oranges, bananas, pears, bread, jams and cereal. We found the breakfast a bit too simple, so we bought peaches and walnuts and mixed them in with the yoghurt. There is also a balcony just off the reception area with a view to the beach, where you can sit and chill with a drink from the bar. The hotel is literally a minute walk to the beach, where there were deckchairs and umbrellas. As most visitors prefer to travel to other beaches such as Antisammos, a 20 minute drive from Sami, and Myrtos, it was virtually empty and we shared the beach with 8 other people at the most. Sami's beaches are mostly shingle/pebbles, so bring some swimming/rubber soled shoes as there are sea urchins and rocks in the water. You can buy a pair in Sami town for 10 Euros. We welcomed the walk to and from Sami as it increased our appetite and was a fantastic way to digest the delicious food. Try and make out the sound of owls hooting on your way back at night. There is a well-stocked mini-market at the local camp site, which is on this route, or a mini-market just around the corner from the hotel. The Melissani cave is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. The cave has a pool of water with the most incredible blue colour I have ever seen. You pay 7 Euros to visit the cave, which includes a 15 minute boat ride - well worth the visit. Sami is a small town, but with enough restaurants and bars, and a few souvenir shops. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and although there were many tourists, it did not feel crowded. Most tourists we saw were families or couples. If you don't want to be in a busy town with music blaring from bars and rowdy tourists, Sami is the place. At night, the main strip is usually full of locals sitting on benches enjoying the evening, or young and very well behaved kids riding their bikes up and down the main street. Most restaurants and bars have tables and seating area along the beach front. You will see a few cats weaving their way in the open air seating area, but they are well behaved and weren't that bothersome. Regarding food, Sami town has a dozen or so restaurants, with the majority of them offering the same dishes. We ate in just about all of them, and we mostly ate fish and seafood, which was always fresh and simply cooked. There are lots of meat dishes as well. On the main strip I can recommend three places - Mermaid, Akrogiali and Famila. At Mermaid, try their beetroot salad that comes with yoghurt and walnuts (it works), swordfish souvlaki, octopus in vinegar (this octopus is soft, sometimes the grilled octopus can be rubbery) and the famous Kefalonian meat pie. Their lemon sorbet was delicious. Akrogiali, the very last restaurant on the strip is simple, but has some lovely fresh sea bass. However, the best food we ate was at Familia. Don't let the Italian name fool you - the food is all Greek. The dishes have all of the usual Greek ingredients, but come with a modern and fresh twist on traditional recipes. The quality was the best in Sami. We can highly recommend their aubergine salad, which unlike most of the other Sami restaurants is simply roasted aubergine with pine nuts, and not mixed with yoghurt. Their fried calamares were the best, and we tried calamares in all of the places we ate. Their cheese pies were the most delicious we ate, and they had some interesting salads in addition to the usual Greek salad. Our favourite was the lentil and anchovy salad. Their bread was also the best in Sami. On average we would spend around 26 Euros for about four dishes, which we shared. This included a beer or two. The local white wine, Robola, was not to our liking. The most expensive meal we ate was around 35 Euros for two, and the cheapest was 23 Euros, which included fresh fish! We stuck to simple alcoholic drinks like gin and tonic as the cocktails were not great. Allow sufficient time for your bill to arrive, but that's the beauty of Sami. The pace slows down to allow you to savour the sea air, the wonderful atmosphere of kids riding their bikes along the strip, and the yachts and boats bopping up and down along the marina.

We stayed at the Athina Beach Hotel a couple of weeks ago, and what a wonderful time we had. Great hotel in a wonderful situation near to the beach. Makis and his Family were great, nothing was too much trouble. Car hire was organised for us and Makis was always there in the evenings to welcome everyone back to the hotel and for good companionship around the Bar. We ate in Sami at the Dolphin,a family run taverna with great food. We found that prices were similar to when we were there 2 years ago, which was good news as we had expected prices to be higher due to the economic problems in Greece.

Makis, the owner of Athina Hotel, is also the Greek Sunshine itself. Makis makes it his prime concern to ensure that you are made to feel welcome and comfortable in your surroundings at all times. Allow him the opportunity to make you feel like a member of his family- drop any stiff, shy, awkwardness in the Departure Lounge at the airport and benefit from his infectious, smiling approach to you and your holiday.

Rooms are beautifully clean. Spartan. White. Cotton Sheets changed daily. The best rooms face over the sea which have the morning sun. Air con is included - we had hoped to sleep without it and have the windows open and the shutters pulled to so that we could breath the sea air and smell the eucalyptus trees - all a very romantic idea until the mosquitoes drive you into submission..

This is a very quiet and unspoilt corner of Kefalonia. Sami is within an easy, level 10/15 minute delightful walk along the seafront which provides a good choice of tavernas and supermarkets. We ate regularly at KARMAGIO Grill: Idyllicly situated on the waterfront away from the bigger more expensive waterfront tavernas. Alex, the fabulous chef, cooks freshly caught fish of the dayand provides a simple but delicious Greek menu - do try his Tomato Burgers - they are fabulous! Another recommendation for eating is Zepbath fish taverna in Karavomylos just a 3 minute walk from the hotel (cross straight over the Agia Effimia road and its on your right) - here try the Garlic Sauce and 'Egglfish Salad' (taramasalata!). Meals for 4 at both places with alcohol averaged at £10/12 a head - VERY reasonable.

We hired a car from Pefanis.(Cephalonia Car Hire). Fully comp, unlimited mileage, 2 drivers at 154 euros a bargain. No hassels and they were waiting for us at the airport.

Use of the swimming pool at the Ionian Emerald is a really big bonus. It is a BEAUTIFUL pool. We only hope that the Athina guests treat this priviledge with respect so that it continues to be available.

Makis has the most delightful old mother 'Mama' who chats with great affection in Greek to you while she waters her plants. We all nearly cried saying goodbye to her - somehow she had touched our hearts - as did the whole island.

We will return. Jim, Rosie, Annie and Pip Laker.

Room Tip: If you are travelling with teenagers/grown up children I would advise you to consider booking 2 room...
