We have just returned from our 2 week stay at the Athina through Thomas Cook. For £550 for a fortnight including flights in July it's hard to fault! We loved the holiday, and Makis was a very welcoming host. He remembers everyone's names and his family are also charming (special mention for his lovely Mum!).

When we arrived, we were given a drink and a choice of rooms, and chose what I think may have been the best room in the whole hotel! It was on the second floor on the corner of the building with a huge wrap around balcony, and a side sea view.

Having air con included was a huge blessing as it reached over 30 most days we were there. The room is the usual basic Greek room, for the price that's absolutely expected. The use of the facilities at the neighbouring 5 star is a great bonus.

There is a little beach with free beds by the hotel, and the pebbly beach on the 15 minute walk to Sami is huge and good for swimming (you might want to buy shoes as the sea is also pebbly). Perfectly adequate for a couple of days relaxing; if you want to do more than stay by the pool it's best to hire a car though.

There are 3 tavernas nearby and we also ate at the Ionian Emerald one night, which was lovely. The Karavomylos taverna has the best view I have ever seen from dinner! Sami is also walkable - I highly recommend To Rahati which is next to the Spathis bakery and on the front road, but without tables by the harbour - a Greek meze restaurant where all the other diners were Greek - we loved it.

Breakfast is basic but fine, if you fancy a change the bakery is 2 minutes away and does a mean chocolate croissant!

We would definitely return. If you enjoy real Greek atmosphere, peace and quiet, beautiful sea views and a good base from which to explore the island it's perfect.

We stayed for a week as a part of a package holiday courtesy of the nice people at Easyjet. Its slightly out of Sami and to be honest, if you are driving its a little difficult to find and not well signposted. The hotel is clean with a large breakfast room, two terraces and a bar. The rooms that we saw are quite small, but clean and for the price well looked after. Our room had a fridge, good air conditioning, and a safe. The balcony was small but more than adequate. The room could have done with net curtains or similar rather than a very heavy curtain. There was a broken light bulb in the bathroom - which i am sure would have been sorted had we asked. We did not eat an evening meal at the hotel but the breakfasts are poor and were the same each day. But with a fabulous bakers round the corner you can easily skip breakfast and grab a croissant and coffee and eat on the beach. If you stay at the hotel you can use the 5* facilities of the hotel next door. If you are not inclined to wander far then this is a great spot to wile away the day. Beware though the internet connection is terrible. There is a very nice restaurant a few hundred metres up the beach (beyond the "lake"). Otherwise, its a 10min walk into Sami to sample the usual touristic restaurants and bars. Definitely recommend but be aware of its location.

Room Tip: Even those with a sea view are not great as the hotel is set back from the beach and there are some tennis courts that block the view. Avoid the ground floor rooms if you want privacy during the evenings.

Friendly, polite and cooperative but in the same time old hotel, mix and match, terrible bathrooms, no safety (windows do not close) poor breakfast.
The owner also owns the next door 'five star; hotel and when he sees that you are not happy with Athina, proposes a 'bargain' price and sends you to the next door one.
Athina is good, but desperately needs renovation (old 80s furniture, mix and match from anything they had from anywhere else, old bathrooms etc) or closing down.
Breakfast is poor for 60 euros per night.
In general, is not good value for price.

Athina Beach is about as good as it gets for the money. It's smart, clean, comfortable and well-equipped plus the views across the Ionian are first class.
As a bonus you can use the pools at the neighbouring – and much more expensive – Ionian Emerald for free.
But what you'll really notice is the length owner Makis goes to make his guests feel welcome.
As soon as we'd arrived we were offered a free upgrade from a room to an apartment when Makis noticed we had a baby.
He remembers everyone's names and makes a point of introducing you to other guests.
Evenings in the bar are convivial, so much so that they attract guests from the Ionian Emerald.
We suffered a puncture on the way over from the airport and Makis went out of his way to get us another tyre.
Even though our shower and air-conditioning played up, I'm still giving Athina Beach the full five stars as it's truly outstanding value.

Room Tip: Pick a sea view.

I had the pleasure to spend my 1st trip to this beautiful island at this hotel.
It's a lovely and genuine family ran place. Markis and his family really made our stay great.
Nothing was never too much to ask and he made a real effort to remember our names and introduce guests to one another. The hotel is situated 10/15 min walk from the main port/town of Sami. The walk is lovely along the sea front. There are a few mini markets around 5 mins walk from the hotel and a lovely Bakery just next to the hotel, I would suggest people to hire a car, we did not but can see why everyone did. The rooms are very basic but ok just to have somewhere to sleep as you will be out most of the time. We were allowed to use the pool at the hotel across as it is the same family who run/own it. The staff there were lovely and everyone we came across was friendly. Thank you to Markis and family x we will be back soon. Natasha & Chantelle
