We chose the Astra after much research. Sept 1-13 We especially wanted a sea view which we got, it was bliss to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine after lovely days out. Our apartment was near the end of a block and was relatively quiet and private. Night time noise from returning heavy footed guests is universal so not much of an issue. The apartment was very well equipped and appointed. The pool areas are fine , It was child free thankgoodness so I dont know if staying during the school holidays would be as good. There is even a couple of shelves of good books in reception for guests. We were able to shower and freshen up on departure day even though we left at 9.30pm. IWe thoroughly recomend the Astra and will definately be going back

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview higher floor away from the pool areas and main building

We stayed in the Astra Village Apartments 24/09 - 01/10.
The apartment themselves were very clean, very Greek and on the whole, spacious; apart from the bathroom.
The views were lovely and I think you get what you pay for.

The only gripes I had were privacy, water temperature from the shower and sunbeds.
We stayed in the first floor block behind reception, end apartment and felt that everyone could see into each others apartments – well we could!
The shower was a real pain, no matter how I adjusted the temperature; I either got scolded or frozen even if the temp gauge was in the middle - it might have been broken and perhaps I should've said something.
Sunbeds - we saw people reserving sunbeds from 08:00am onwards to get the best spot which was annoying as it made us not use the pool area at all.

The location of the apartments was good, right in the middle of a lovely village and had friendly staff.
I would go back to Koutouloufari and stay in the Astra Village Apartments but not as a first choice.

My rating on the room being average was based on my gripes above.

Room Tip: Try and get a higher floor and back block for the views. If you want to sleep in piece, do not get...

Absolutely brilliant all round. We stayed in a lovely studio with sea view and were made to feel at home right from the start by the lovely family who run the Astra village (special hello to Kostas and Yanni in the bar). Koutouloufari is a lovely village on the hillside which, although just a 15 minute walk down to the beaches and town of hernossisos, feels many many miles away from the noisy bars and nightclubs you can find down there if you want to. Bear in mind that this is on a hillside so ideal if you are keen on walking but not if you are unable or unwilling to exercise. That said there are many places to rent cars, quads or bikes and a taxi costs €7 to or from hernossisos so pretty reasonable.
There are many bars and restaurants in Koutouloufari and it's 2 neighbouring villages both traditional and modern and all are very welcoming, serve very good food (and very reasonably priced too). I don't usually leave comments on trip-advisor but Its been a long time since we came back from holiday with such a smile on our face after being made to feel so welcome - Crete, Koutouloufari and the Astra village are fantastic and we are already booking for next year.

just got back from the astra village apartments in koutouloufari crete for the second year on the trot and our stay was just as fabulous as the first year.the hotel gives off just the vibe we were looking for and that is important, its run by a great and very helpfull family.
the rooms are spotlessly clean and the pools very well maintained.a chilled out drink in the bar was a frequent stop again this year.it is perfectly situated for many local bars, restaurants and small shops right on the doorstep.we are already thinking of going again next year.

Room Tip: ask for the rooms on the higher level for a chilled view

We booked these apartments for June 2013 and we were not sorry. Ideally located in the beautiful village of Koutouloufari, bright, cheery, spotlessly clean and the family who run it are professional yet helpful and friendly. The room are typically Greek but perfectly adequate for an inexpensive family holiday. They are cleaned regularly and towel changes are frequent.
There are two swimming pools and the pool located in the centre of the complex has a pool bar. Although the pools are quite small, there is enough room to take a dip. The area around the centre pool is quite spacious and there are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. The pool bar is a little pricey for drinks but the food is reasonable and you can order a light lunch.
The other swimming pool is located behind the main bar/restaurant area and is quite small with limited space around it but we saw one or two families using it with their children as it wasn't quite as deep as the other pool.
The bar is well stocked and offers a good choice of meals and drinks, all of which are reasonably priced but there are many restaurants close by so we usually went out to eat but called for a drink before setting of or when returning from our evening out. The bar is very popular with holiday makers and locals alike and was very busy most evenings, Staff (family members) are friendly and pleasantly efficient.
You can pay locally (cash only) for air conditioning and safety deposit box use and a late check out is available if you need it.You pay at the end of your holiday when you check out so beware...make sure you have enough cash as the trek into town for the cash machine is a 20 minute very hot walk!
I suspect that as these apartments become better known they will build up a regular clientele, which may lead to difficulty in booking in the future. Being regular Greek goers, we have seen this happen with other accommodation that was relatively unknown until receiving excellent reviews. In my opinion, the price of this holiday was very low given the high quality of the accommodation and we will certainly be booking again if we can!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the complex overlook an olive grove and are very quiet with a cooler feel

ok Trip advisor virgin here, but had to break my duck to give a quick review for the Astra. We chose the Astra following a recomendation from a customer of mine who has been to the village many times before, and after initially looking at other more expensive villas and apartments we decided to give he Astra ago, and that was the best thing i think we could have done.

As everyone else has said the apartments are mega clean, basic but in a brillinat location and with customer services levels way above anything else i have experienced in recent years on family holidays. yes the pools are small but more than adequate for the kids and a quick dip for adults. While we were there we were told by the reception that they were trying to obtain permission to develop the bottom pool to make it bigger which would be a great idea!

The boys up in the Astra cafe bar couldnt do enough to help and the food at lunch time was great value at 5 euros (sandwich, chips and a cola) and the all important Mythos was served in frozen glassses and delivered to your table without even having to promp the staff (dee i told you the sevice was brilliant)

we can honestly say we didnt have 1 bad meal in the village for the 2 weeks we were there, and we found some great little bars (best bar by far was Atrium Bar just to the right of the Astra Village) and drinks very reasonable everywhere.

Anyway we liked it so much we have just booked to go back next year for 3 weeks, and we have never ever been to the same place twice!

well done astra Village..keep up the already great work and see you next year

This was the cheapest fortninght I have had in Greece and these apartments far exceeded my expectations!
Very fresh looking, friendly staff and the cleaners do a fantastic job - apartment was cleaned and serviced every day!
Central location within Koutouloufari which is a wonderful little village. Some fantastic tavernas literally yards from the apartments (try Beijing to Bali if you like Chinese, for more traditional Greek cuisine try Iokasti or Emmanuel).
