“A PLEASURE AND A MUST FOR ALL LOVERS OF CRETE.”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

I visited Asterias Village at the end of June for 10 days of relaxation and a taste of the greek lifestyle. The staff were fantastic!! The rooms were basic but was expected due to the bargain of a price we paid. We went on a self catering basis which was perfect as we planned to venture into the local towns, taverns and restaurants for varied foods and drinks, and oh we did that! I was never a huge lover of lamb before I went away to Greece but the Kleftico at Olivias (the on site restaurant) was fantastic!! I travelled with my partner and his parents which was a delight as we spent many days soaking up the sun, and the evenings on our balconies chilling out with an ice cold methos. Bliss! The sun loungers which were modern and were plentyful on site. The pool was brilliant, clean and clear despite the hotel being at full capacity whilst we stayed it never seemed full. We also spent most days hogging the jacuzzi which was lovely. I will say prices on site were higher than the local bars for beverages which is a shame as we spent the majority of our money on cocktails and iced coffee's. I would reccomend you go all inclusive to avoid overspending like we did at times. The buffet breakfasts were tasty and bar snacks filling - we went for burgers and chips usually which only cost around 4.50 euro's. I would recommend the chicken curry at Olivias, BUT A TIP - Do go lighty when salting your foods as the salt shakers pour very fast resulting in me ruining one of my main courses! The town was a big walk away, which could be off putting to some, luckily there was a large supermarket oppisite the resort so it was easy to pop over and grab water/snacks/juices. A huge shout out to Alex who really made us feel welcome, we were known as "the boys" to the bar staff and the banter was hilarious. I would certainly return to Asterias Village as it was such a welcoming place and many happy memories were made there. 10/10!!

We stayed at the Asterias Village from 20th August until the 27th August but I was suprised when we were given an apartment in the neighbouring Dream Apartments. Upon our arrival at 10pm we were greeted with drinks as a welcome. I absolutely loved the peace and quite within the Dream Apartments area and we had the swimming pool more or less to ourselves all week.please do not be put off by the reviews, ok the rooms are basic but lets be honest who goes on holiday to stay in the room. We met some really nice people from Newcastle and London. If you want to enjoy a nice meal visit Oliva's resteraunt at the top of the steps, a four course meal costs €15 euro's which is very reasonable. The best meal we had however was at Romantika which is 50 yards up the road, we visited twice. Also there is a take away at the top of the steep hill which is called Piazza Slovaki which was really nice and very cheap. To sum up a very nice and relaxing holiday, I would definitely come back to Asterias Village or Dream Apartments no problem. By the way the cleaners were superb, they cleaned the apartments every day and always were happy to see you. Thank you for a nice holiday.

Quite a long review, but like to help other travellers....Stayed here for 11 nights in August with my husband and 7 year old son. Lovely location, the three villages are beautiful, especially the Monday night in Old Hersonissos, with the village band and dancers. Book a table, we used the tiny Meze bar next to the small kiosk shop, wonderful.
Stayed in a very clean 1 bed apartment at the bottom of the steps to the restaurant, nice view, and handy to nip back from the pool. Friendly check-in, room simple, but fine. Ask for a matress topper as the beds are hard, but fine with the foam on top. Air con OK, not brilliant, not helped by the lack of curtain lining in the kitchen/living area where our son slept. As soon as the sun comes up, it is very bright and warm, but he slept fine.
Pool great, right size and various depths, no problem getting a sun lounger and shade when we went down about 9. We stayed half board, breaksfast buffet is served in the pool bar, by Alex and Barkey, both nice guys, and a credit to the hotel. Evening meal is a 4 course meal in the Oliva restaurant at the top of the steps. Food was great, good choice, can also go for lunch instead of dinner. Sophie and Frosso are lovely girls working there, but there is a downside. On 3 occations we had to wait quite a long time for a table. Over an hour once, not offered any bread or menus whilst waiting. The man who works there was still trying to tempt customers in, when he should have been dealing with those waiting. I did complain, and was told the was a problem with the chef and Frosso was moved into the kitchen to help. It was the night of the circus/magic show, which my son was really looking forward to. We caught the last few minutes and it looked great.
Another moan, lots of smoking in the open air restaurant. Quite off putting whilst you're eating. We paid extra to go the the BBQ greek night at the pool bar, great food and entertainment, but again spoilt by the owners wife smoking next to the buffet.
If you have kids, Star beach is a great day out. Take the free bus to town and walk about 20 mins. 8 euro for a wrist band for the rides, 3 euro for sun beds, and all the wonderful kids pools and slides/splash areas are free. Food and drink reasonable, or just go for a stroll at lunch. Foam party from 4.30, fine for kids as well as teens, very friendly.
We fancied a trip on one of the many boats from the harbour. Got down at 1115, for a 12 sail. Chose a small boat, Freedom, as we don't like big crowds, they sold it on the fact it had showers, toilets and rest areas. as sat waiting. By 1150 no one had come to the boat and I went to enquire at the ticket booth, for them to say their boat isn't running now, and they'd moved us onto a huge, loud ship, with no toilets or showers. Decided to go, but came home feeling robbed, the trip was poor! So be careful, when picking a boat.
I love the area, Koutouloufari is so pretty, amazing choice of wonderful tavernas. I think I would stay at Asterias again, but probably on a self catering basis, as we are a bit lazy getting up for breakfast, and the choice of amazing local restaurants. The wait for our meals on an evening became tiresome, but could easily be solved by taking orders in the waiting area and offering bread to keep you going for half an hour.

Me and my husband stayed at the Aterias Village in the middle of August 2013 for a week on a half board basis - it was a treat for our 40th birthdays this year while my mum and dad looked after our children back at home. We arrived about 11.30pm on the Saturday evening. We went down the 60 stairs to reception. The scene as we went down the stairs was beautiful - the pool was lit in blue and there were candles round the pool area making it very bohemian.
We were given vouchers for breakfast and evening meals one of which was for the evening we arrived which we didn't expect so we weren't massively hungry but we ventured back up the 60 stairs (feel the burn!!) to the Oliva restuarant. The voucher entitles you to a set 4 course meal - starter, salad, main and desert. There are a large number of choices in each category but the menu does not change which - whilst the food is nice - gets a bit boring by the end of the week. You can use the vouchers for lunch or dinner but it's still the same menu regardless of the time of day.
We were then taken to our room - we had booked a studio as there was just the 2 of us. We were shown to our room which was about as far away from the pool area as you could get. Asterias Village had obviously purchased the Dream Apartments complex next door and made this their studio section. It had a pool which was much inferior to the main pool area and another bar (again not as nice as the main pool bar). We could still use the main pool/bar though which we chose to do as it was much nicer.
The studio was clean but very basic - the kitchen area had a fridge and kettle which were extremely useful and a mish-mash of utensils and crockery and a hot plate to cook on. We didn't cook anything as we were half board but I'm sure if you were self-catering it would have been challenging to cook a decent meal with the facilities provided.
Breakfast was in the pool bar and was adequate although it was the same every morning.
Koutouloufari itself was lovely - lots of nice boutique-y type bars and restaurants and a supermarket opposite the complex which was extremely useful for bottles of drink to put in the fridge.
We had a nice relaxing week not doing much apart from lying by the pool and so this resort suited us. However, I would book an apartment if you can afford it as we felt a bit isolated where we were and I'm sure the accommodation in the main complex is better.

Room Tip: Book an apartment if you can afford it

Really enjoyed our stay at the Asterias. We stayed on a half board basis - the buffet breakfast was adequate with a good variety to keep most people happy, including sausages, eggs, beans, pancakes, greek yogurt, cereals, toast, fruit and a nice variety of teas and coffee. The evening meal was from a set menu at the Oliva restaurant, a lovely little Taverna in the hotel with outside seating and beautiful views. The menu was varied including traditional Greek options such as Moussaka (including a vegetarian version), stuffed vine leaves (delicious!) and Geek salad as well as a few pasta dishes and pork schnitzel (to cater for the large amount of German guests!). There was also a children's menu with the usual chicken nuggets and chips etc! The staff at the restaurant were lovely and very accommodating, making special meals my son who is wheat intolerant.
The accommodation was clean and spacious. We stayed in a maisonette which had 2 single beds downstairs, bathroom and small kitchen/dining area and a separate bedroom upstairs with double bed and tv. The beds are quite hard though, which can take a little getting used to. Tv is pretty non existent for us Brits - mainly Greek and German channels. Luckily out maisonette was quite close to the pool and we didn't have too many steps to negotiate, but the hotel is set into a hillside so be prepared for lots of steps, especially from the pool area up to the restaurant.
Across the road from the hotel is a small supermarket selling most things you would need - the fresh fruit is amazing and so cheap, but I would recommend getting the free shuttle bus (which runs 3 times a day) down into the main town of Hersonissos as there is a large Spa which is much better value for all your essentials.
There is a kids club running during the day for 3-7 yr olds, but it seemed pretty low key (a small room where children only ever seemed to sit colouring/drawing round a table) and there never seemed to be any activities going on - my youngest son who normally loves getting involved in that kind of thing wasn't the slightest bit tempted by it.
The evening entertainment at the hotel seemed just as low key and the pool bar really lacked atmosphere in the evening - that along with the extortionate prices for drinks (5 euros for spirits and 2.50 for a small soft drink!) meant that it was usually empty. The beer and local wine was much more reasonable though, about 3 euros for a pint and 4.50 for 500ml karaf of wine so we tended to stick to that. Apart from a pool table and air hockey there isn't much to keep you or the children entertained in the evening. The one exception was the Circus night which was great, however we ended up sitting around for ages waiting for it to start as there seemed to be very few people turning up to watch and I think they were waiting for an audience to gather before starting, which ended up being about 45 minutes after the advertised time - a bit annoying when you've kids.
The swimming pool was lovely, nice and clean and well maintained however it was very cold which I was surprised at for saying it was the height of summer! There was a distinct lack of sunbeds though and if you didn't have you towel down by 9am you'd be lucky to get one at all. The pool bar served food during the day, we ate there once and the food was tasty and good value for the large portions (about 4 euros for a large greek salad baguette with chips and the same for a burger and chips).
Overall we had a lovely relaxing holiday, definitely helped by the wonderful friendly and cheerful staff who made the effort to learn your name and who always seemed genuinely happy to help.

I travelled here in the beginning of August with my husband, son and daughter(18 and 20). We were extremely happy when we were shown our apartment. It was 2 bedroomed and we had use of a private roof top pool and garden. It was so good we didn't need to use the main pool. It was a lovely surprise and really made our holiday special. Thanks Asterias! The service was friendly and efficient including the cleaners. Views are fab from up here too. We didn't see the entertainment put on now and again but it seemed to lack a bit of atmosphere to be honest. We loved the food at the Oliva restaurant. Very fresh and tasty with big portions. In fact we thought it was the best restaurant in the area! Be prepared to put on weight BTW!! The staff are a credit to the restaurant and are friendly and very helpful.
Go to Hersonissos old town on Monday about 7 pm but make sure you check food prices first. It can be more expensive and we had a limited menu in our restaurant. The Greek dancing is lovely. Lots of families were joining in and it was really delightful.
We actually enjoyed one evening spent at Hersonissos Port. We walked past a jazz player who was playing to people eating at tables set on the beach. There were some nice chilled zones in bars as well as the odd 'younger' bars. However certainly before midnight there were plenty families just enjoying the night down there.
The best beaches were Stallis beach and sun beach in Malia. Get the Malia bus at number 21 bus stop for both. It comes every 15 minutes generally. They have conductors on board. Cost is 2 euros each way.Be warned that for this particular Malia beach this bus stops at Malia old town and you will have to walk a fair distance to sun beach! Aghios Nikolias bus (same stop and every half hour) goes to main Malia beach which is nearer than sun beach. Buses are a bit hit and miss so better to hire a car!!
Overall we found the Greek people to be warm and welcoming. They would often instigate long conversations in their bars genuinely seeming keen to know all about you. It certainly makes a change from the brusque and impersonal treatment you get at a lot of English restaurants. All in all a lovely break for all and we will be back to Asterias and Crete! Sorry for the essay btw! :))

We stayed here at the beginning of August. The hotel and all surrounding areas are kept immaculate. The cleaners do an excellent job of keeping the rooms clean. We had a room over the restaurant which meant we had wonderful views form our balcony. The room was right at the top of the resort and at times we did not feel part of the resort itself.
During the day the pool area is very busy and you can feel a bit crammed in. We did not get sunbeds on one day of our holiday despite going down to the pool at 930. We learned our lesson and towels went on sunbeds at around 8am after that. (this is despite signs saying towels will be moved after an hour). There is a shortage of sun parasols and you need one with the midday sun. The staff in the pool bar are all very friendly and the food served was good and not expensive. A carafe of white wine is really nice but I couldn't recommend the rose.
The restaurant is OK. The food is fine but have tasted much better elsewhere in the resort and we were glad we went self-catering. The service is good but lacks the warmth so prevalent in Greece, We loved the Alchemist in Koutouloufari and David Vegera in Piskopiano but all the restaurnats we tried were good.
The resort is quiet at night and despite evening entertainment being offered it never seemed to be very successful and few people drank in the pool bar(used for evening entertainment) and so the resort lacked atmosphere in the evening. This is the main reason for the four star review.
Koutouloufari itself is a wonderful place to stay for evening atmosphere. Lots of lovely restaurants and a few bars make the resort a wonderful place for a friendly meal and drink. It was never loud or raucous. Really lovely place full of couples and families.
I would recommend walking along to Old Hersonnisis for the Greek evening every Monday evening. It was great fun and the village square is lovely. Book a table before you go in one of the restaurants in the square as it is very busy.
Asterias is a good base for a holiday.
