The village of Koutouloufari really is a splendid place to visit. There are enough restaurants to dine at a different one every night. I would class it as an up market Greek village. Very nice. The only downside really is that it is a good steep downhill walk to the beach, which really isn't very good, then an even steeper walk back(it's always worse going uphill). There are plenty of buses running to star beach and Stalis both of which have nicer beaches. It can get costly if you are a beach person travelling on buses every day. There is a walk through the far end of the village down to star beach which is a more gentle incline but is still a good trek. We found the prices, especially drinks, quite horrendous(obviously trying to claw back the deficit).
Asterias village itself is a decent place to stay, the steps can be a bit of a bind if you are not particularly mobile. The rooms are cleaned every day except Sunday and the staff are really nice.
It is a family oriented place to stay so therefore there are lots of children. This can be a bit off putting as children tend not to get out of the pool and it may have been my imagination but I could smell urine. This was the reason we spent so much time walking into Hersonissos to catch a bus. Hersonissos itself is a very busy place, not to my liking. If you go down to Hersonissos, be prepared to be accosted by every person in every bar trying to get your custom. Horrible dump.
We had a good room looking out to sea(on the horizon). It was on two levels, the master bedroom being upstairs. One wardrobe which was totally insufficient, a tiny kitchen area with what amounted to a camping stove for cooking, a small bathroom, and a small balcony. There are two pools at Asterias village. The smaller of the two, the prices at the bar were cheaper. Air conditioning is necessary and payable at the end of your stay as is the safe(a rip off). Take the cost into consideration. 7 euros and 2 euros respectively per day. Exchange rates were poor(better in Hersonissos).
I personally wouldn't go back as I(we) like to alternate with beach and pool. The pool was as set out really well and "looked the part", but as described a bit smelly. Good beaches were too far away. The village of Koutouloufari though is excellent. Piskopiano is also ok but a little more "down market".

we stayed in asterias village in August, it was very nice resort and very nice in the village with plenty of restaurants to choose from the village did lack a few pubs, on our last night we walked up to piskopiano village and found a pub with a bit music going on.

The beach which is a easy 15 minute walk down to was small but ok (up hill all the way back), we got the bus to star beach and Stalida which had big waves and was better beach and well worth the e6-80 the return bus fare.

We booked this break aimed at having some quiet family time, good food and sunshine. Despite our worried about the hotels stepsmwe managed. There is only one set and our two yr old managed them. The hotel staff weere helpful despite it clearly being the end of their season. There were only a handfulof guests in the hotel whichs uited us as our child can be quite noisy. The pool was great but very cold. The sea was warmer. There is a convienent shop opposite the hotel whichwas expensive but beat walking down hill for ice creams and water. This is the right location fornthose who want to experience a little of the real crete. It is away from the busy center (20mins walk) there are lots of little creek restaurant and beautiful cobbled streets. It was just lovely in the evenings. There was a great bar called rustica selling nice wine and too many great restaurants to mention.a great plafe. 25 degrees each day. Just warm enough tovsit and tan but not burn. Brilliant timetogo with, young children. My only niggle was with the ultra firm beds.....

Excellent venue.Staff very helpful.Restaurant food probably among the best in the village, but slightly lacks Greek atmosphere.Very clean and well laid out, except for the many steps.Minus point,if you have a ground floor studio,it's a job to keep the(very attractive)kittens out, resulting in closed door and window, and can get a bit airless.

Room Tip: Don't have a ground floor.

We usually go for higher star ratings for our holidays, especially in Greece, but were recommended to the Asterias by the travel agent as reviews are excellent. It is a very pretty site and the staff are helpful and friendly. Our one bedroomed apartment was fairly spacious and clean but quite dated, especially the shower room with a leaking toilet which only showed towards the end of our holiday so we didn't complain. Towels were thin and a bit tatty. Good job I had taken my own bath sheet. Lots of steps which the travel agent had not told us about. I managed but not easily. Good views towards the sea but not a place for beach lovers. Good free shuttle bus down towards the main town. Very good points were the lovely villages of Koutouloufari, Piskipiano and Old Hersonissos with typically Greek restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for a room midway between Reception and main road. Only approx 36 steps to manage mostly then!
