“Lovely small castle”
Reviewed 29 September 2011

Located with a great view over lake Vättern. The rooms are very nice - but I did change from the main building to a smaller house outside the castle gates in order to have a TV in the room. Lunch and dinner were suberb but to bad the breakfast did´nt hold the same standard - quite poor for beeing a conference hotel. The only minus is he location very close to the main road - quite disturbing noice from heavy traffic if you wanted to sit ouside.

Had a really nice weekend (Friday-Saturday) with my family and friends at Västanå Slott (Castle). We stayed at the Castle and the rooms were huge and it was fun to be in "the real" atmosphere.
The 3-course dinner was served in the restaurant and I have to say the girl that was serving us was really outstanding, she was also there the following morning and her personallity was just great.
The food was ok, nice but no huge surprise, wine suggestion/package very nice.
Breakfast could be improved.

We stayed here 2 nights over the Midsummer holiday weekend in a double room in the manor house - Room 1, the one in the photo on the "Rum" (rooms) page of the website. The room is stunning - very spacious, exquisitely decorated and furnished with a very large and comfortable bed and lots of antiques. The bathroom was modern, but had no separate shower.

The room overlooked the front courtyard. An equally large double room on the other side of the manor house overlooks the lake, but has the disadvantage of being on the side near to the motorway below so (unlike Room 1) may suffer from motorway noise. Other bedrooms in the manor house are smaller, but bedrooms are also available in the two wings (separate buildings) around the courtyard.

Most of the public rooms (including the very elegant breakfast room, but not the Restaurant) have stunning views over the lake and are wonderfully furnished with antiques and family portraits.

The owner (Fredrik von Otter) is also the chef, and an excellent one at that. We were the only non-Swedes that weekend, but he took the trouble to produce a menu in English for us each evening and, while on duty on the first evening, he even came out of the kitchen to explain the 3 couse set menu to us and check that there was nothing we could not eat on it.

Dinner includes a cava (taken at Reception) and, before dinner on the first evening, we were lucky enough to meet Fredrik's equally charming father who told us all about the fascinating history of the hotel (in impeccable English).

The food was delicious and beautifully presented and came with the option (at extra cost) of a glass of wine chosen to accompany each course. The wine was well chosen and gave us a chance to try wines we probably would not have thought of, at (for Sweden) a reasonable cost.

There was only one other couple in the restaurant on the Sunday evening and fewer guests staying than on the Saturday night, but the restaurant service was just as excellent, even if the room did lack the buzz of Saturday night.

Booking online is all in Swedish. We did not realise that you are supposed to pay for the room online 7 days in advance and, a few days before our arrival, received an email in Swedish (followed a day later by one in English) pointing this out. During that time we had no email access, but luckily Reception called me on my mobile and explained the position, enabling me to pay by credit card over the phone.

Next door to the manor is Granna golf course, which many of the guests played.

All in all, a truly magical experience and one we thoroughly recommend. Not cheap, but excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Room 1
