“The wedding weekend”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

A wedding weekend to remember, for all the right reasons.
If your not worried about sharing your bathroom.
You will enjoy this unusual location. Vaxholm Castle has beautiful views. Not forgetting to visit Vaxholm itself just a two minute boat journey away in this beautiful country of Sweden.

Vaxholm is about an hour by ferry from Stockhom. Whilst Vaxholm is a charming town, you don't really get the full archipelago flavour until you go to islands further out than Vaxholm.

Kastellet B&B is 100m off-shore. Regular boats take you there between 11am - 5pm and are free for people staying at the B&B (times differ depending on season). But if you need to get to Vaxholm early for an onward ferry connection the regular Vaxholmbolsgat ferries call occasionally but charge an extra-ordinary amount of money for the 100m trip (120 SEK for 2 adults and 1 child - approx €14).

The B&B itself is ok. The 3 bed rooms are big enough (just) for 3 people. The commonal bathrooms are fine. Generally the B&B is pretty clean and looked after.

But a few niggles:
1) window didn't open in room leading to a hot night
2) the juice at breakfast contained a large number of floating dead ants
3) overall the whole island was quite dirty, rubbish strewn and run-down.

For Swedish prices, the B&B is reasonable price but this does come with some disadvantages.

We had a three-day, two-night stay in Stockholm and decided to stay at the Kastellet B&B since they appeared one of the best options for three adults in a room (couple with adult daughter). When making the booking I did not realize that it was some distance from the city center. Still, the commute from the central station is easy and fun. In just an hour you go by metro, bus, and boat to a genuine fortress occupying the whole of a small island. The bedrooms were old cannon housing rooms. The windows look out on beautiful sunsets. This is clearly a personally run B&B and is very friendly. Breakfast features homemade breads taken straight from the oven.

We traveled into Stockholm central each day - a pleasant trip and no bother. Each evening we looked forward to getting out of the city and back to our quiet island retreat. In the end we felt as if we had two holidays for the price of one (both time and money). We had a city vacation and a rural waterfront vacation. How could you beat that for value?!

Excellent B&B in a real fortress. The setting is unique and can only be highly recommended. Try also the excellent restaurant at the fortress.

The sorroundings are really beautiful and spending the night in a castle is quite impressive (there was even an armour in the corridor!). We were four friends and rented a triple room with an extra bed, which was perfectly OK for a couple of nights. The room was really clean and beautiful. The whole B&B is clean and so nicely decorated. The buffet breakfast was really good, both in quantity, quality and variety. If you are lucky as we were, you can have it outside in the terrace.

The only flaws is that you need to take a ferry from Vaxholm to get to the kastelet (free of charge but with limited times, as the last one is arround 6pm), otherwise, take a boat-taxi. And it took as a while one night -it was quite late indeed, like 1.30am- to find out how to get one. If you plan to have dinner in Vaxholm and returning late, plan your way back ahead and have the taxi booked in advance or at least, the phone number at hand!).

We really enjoyed our stay there and would go back without a doubt. We strongly recommend it. Ideal for couples on a romantic stay or for family with kids (the castle is also a museum of battle arms) who will spend the day outside and return at more standard times than we did.

THe location is great - a short ferry ride from Vaxholm. However be careful when you take the ferry as it was only free from 11am to 5pm out of those hours you either have to pay about 80 for the trip ,or book a boat taxi from reception which can be much chaper depending on the number of people taking it. THere is no food on the castle island, we just bought some food on the mainland and ate it in the very pleasant grounds of the castle. THe 3 person rooms ( 3 single beds) for a couple are beautiful, they face the water and look out over the water and are huge with lovely period features. The 2 bedroom rooms were however much less spectacular, they were very small rooms with 2 single beds - which can be also pushed together as with the 3 bedroom rooms. The 2 bedroom rooms are all on the back and face the interior courtyard. They are clean and functional. Bathrooms and toilets are shared - they were also clean and well maintained. Breakfast was lovely and there was plenty to eat !

Room Tip: As a couple ask for a 3 bedroom room if you want a spectacular view and a spacious and beatifully de...

Stayed with wife and 3 month old baby for 4 nights in august as a base to explore the archipelago. Wanted to be close to roads in case something went awry with the baby. Chose this hotel/b&b because vaxholm hotel had fairly negative reviews trip advisor reviews. It really was a great set up. The 2 women hosts were great. We were able to boil water in the kitchen to sterilize baby bottles. The bathroom situation is fine. There is institutional type soap dispensers forbthe shower and for the bathroom sink. The single beds in the room are fine, even though the are a little worn/soft. The fortress is a stones throw from vaxholm. Off hour water taxis are expesive, so try to take the free tourist taxis or the scheduled ferries, which run until 10pm in the summer. EThe breakfasts were really good, typical Swedish, bread, cheese, boiled egg, cereal. The kitchen was a little buggy with fruit flies, but probably can't be helped in the summer. it is a little hike over gravel uphill to get to the entrance. The vibe of the place is a bit like a hostel, but there aren't rowdy backpackers. A mix of families, couples, and backpackers. It seems to work. I liked the mix. As I said the hosts were really good and accommodating. Would like to go back, especially if there were big beds that I could share with my wife.
