“Comfortable and nice stay”

My wife and I stayed over for three nights at this resort. We arrived late on the Sunday afternoon and was impressed with the looks and appearance. We rented a golf cart and travelled the golf course and saw plenty of game including hippos, crocodiles, impala, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, fish eagles and numerous other bird species. The evening our dinner was a set menu and we choose to go with the venison potjie which was very good. We stayed in room number 10. The rooms were very nicely finished of and the décor is great. Unfortunately as the other person stated, there were no soap dishes in the shower which is a hind sight seeing that no costs were spared in upgrading the facility. The rooms are well stocked with al the amenaties and towels. The breakfast on all the mornings was buffet style and it was good. The other two nights the occupancy was higher and we had a buffet which was good. The décor in the reception, restaurant and throughout the venue is stunning. The staff has been jacked up and the service is good. The pub at the poolside was well stocked. The Wednesday morning we got up early and went for a nice sunrise walk, only my wife and I. The fairways and greens are well maintained but certain tee boxes require attention. The club house and pro shop is well stocked and unfortunately at this stage they don't have a resident pro at the pro shop.
The only down side here is the 2 generators running around the clock as electricity is not available from the municipality due to short payments. However, the rooms was not effected by it and it was only a bit noisy at the restaurant area.

Room Tip: Ensure you get a room overlooking the golf course and as far away as possible from the restaurant...

Phalaborwa is a town located on the edge of the Kruger National Park. Its airport justifiably boasts that it is the ‘Gateway to the Kruger’. Phalaborwa is also home to two significant mining companies. It is therefore potentially blessed with many business and tourist visitors.
The Hans Merensky Golf Estate and Hotel is perfectly located on the Kruger side of Phalaborwa, and benefits from the migration of various game right through the Estate, between the accommodation units, and on the golf course.
Many of the rooms are located on the edge of the links, where the game wanders freely, and the game viewing is therefore excellent. The owners have spent the last few years progressively adding to the units, and the Hans Merensky now boasts many more rooms than when I first visited some 6 years ago.
However, as the place has grown, so it has deteriorated! Sadly, the magnificent setting, and potentially grand buildings do not make up for the absolute absence of the most rudimentary elements of management. Quite simply, there is NO evidence of any management input at the Hans Merensky! The place is a shambles and a case study in ineptitude. You do not need to travel to Sierra Leone or Liberia to experience third world chaos: is is available right here in South Africa!
If you think this statement is over the top, consider our experience at the Hans Merensky. A group of 4 colleagues visited for 2 days, mid-week. Consider that the Hans Merensky lays claim to be a Four Star Hotel (as per the receptionist). We stayed in accommodation block 1-30. Most of these comments pertain to that block. It was brand new, but very poorly completed. Here are some of the ‘highights’:
1. Although we had pre-paid hotel vouchers from our travel agent, made almost 3 months before our arrival, the hotel was unaware of 2 of we 4.
2. The main buildings of the Hotel had not had power for 3 weeks (yes, 3 weeks) when we arrived. The rumour in town was that this was due to non-payment of the account. This makes sense, because he ret of town had power, and it does not take 3 weeks to replace ANY cable. Instead, these buildings are illuminated by a few reading lamps powered by noisy little petrol-driven generators scattered about. In fairness, some accommodation sections ARE supplied off-grid, being on a separate feed.
3. Television is limited to just 6 channels, 4 of them the South African free-to-air channels.
4. None of our room telephones worked.
5. There is no wi-fi.
6. Cellular reception is very poor. There is no data transfoer, even standing outdoors.
7. In 2 of the 4 rooms, the balcony door handles fell off trying to open the door.
8. The rooms are poorly laid out. The bathroom is too big, but the bedroom id so crammed that it is difficult to open the cupboard door.
9. The brand new bath had no less than 13 chip and scratches. I would say it was damaged during building, with bricks and rubble being dropped into it.
10. The balustrades on the balcony and stairs are all broken and falling apart. They are dangerous in that they would not withstand someone falling against them.
11. The showers in 2 rooms had no soap dishes / trays.
12. The showers in 2 rooms had no lip or slope to stop the water flowing across the floor. Every shower flooded the bathroom.
13. Breakfast was chaotic. No spoons. We asked for spoons, and were eventually brought dirty spoons. It took another age to get clean ones. In a 4-star hotel?!
14. The staff is simply not trained. They do not know how to wait a table. They are simply untrained people that are doing their best.
15. We never saw any sort of manager of supervisor in the 2 days we were at the hotel.
16. The staff (e.g. maids) do not have any sort of uniform.
17. The remote control in one room had no batteries.
18. The plug in the washbasin leaked so badly that the only way to shave was to keep the water running on half volume to keep the basin full enough!
19. With the extremely poor service, and the power outage, we did not dare to eat in the dining room, but had a pizza from the wood fired pizza oven at the outside bar for the first night’s dinner. On the second night we gave up and went out.
20. Coke was out of stock. I mean…
21. For the block of 30 units, there is parking for perhaps 5 – 6 cars. The rest have to park a way off in a dusty track. Was there NO thought here? No planning?
22. Came ‘home’ from work, hot and tired after day 1, to find two of the four rooms had not been cleaned, because… ‘Sorry, we did not have spare keys, and you took the only one with you’. Really? Honestly? 4 Star?
So, were there ANY positives? Well, the setting is magnificent, and the potential is great, but this place needs a) a cash injection, b) proper management by someone who cares. The linen is good quality, and the rooms are pretty clean. Everything is good and new, but as said, badly executed and maintained.
Materials and finishes are good, but the quality of the building is shocking, which is in itself and indication of management failure. The place could be upmarket, but is not at present. I have stayed in small private B&Bs that are much more professionally run. I would not stay here if I had any option. But that is very sad. With this setting, I should really love to stay here, but the long list of errors and omission makes it one huge effort!

As for us the trip at the Hotel was marvelous and we have chosen the Hotel for our wedding,and we were exptionally assisted they even gave us a accomodation for free to experience the warmth of their service which met our expectations

The location of this hotel is superb. Bordering the Kruger and on a first class golf course it should be heaving with many more queuing to get in. Sadly it is all but empty and I would be surprised if they are still trading in a year. The reason I presume, and based on my experience, is that the owner has no clue how to run a business or motivate (or even manage) staff. I had many issues trying to get any service at all and when I asked to speak to the manager I was directed to the deputy manager who was standing in for the manager who was "on leave". She wouldn't help me, wouldn't give me the managers name or contact details and basically just walked off when I pursued the matter. The gym is closed, the putt-putt is still being constructed and the beautician is NEVER in the spa - she apparently also works on reception.

Room Tip: Don't bother coming here

The hotel with its adjacent golf course has a very nice location close to Kruger, but unfortunately servicing is of rather poor standard. Food has been disappointing as well. Anyway, for such a low price someone cannot expect 4 star top quality. So we were prepared to accept some deficiencies (we only went there to play a round of golf at Hans Merensky golf course) but not this. In the restaurant we first had to find a chair which did not waggle. The rooms are very spacious and quite clean. But the door at the carport is closed and no key available. To enter the room, we had to walk in the dark round the house to the patio door. During a heavy rain shower the roof leaked. Additionally there had been a power failure, the phone did not work and the lock of the patio door became stuck. So we had to climb out of the window. But the staff has been very friendly and tried to help.

We were going to stay for three nights, but when we arrived they offered us a golf lodge with a broken door, rubbish littered around, and a little private pool with muck. When we complained they said too bad you already paid. Needless to say we demanded our money back and went to Sefapane Lodge instead.

We had lunch there. The lunch was poor, bad service, took to long, no interest. Lunch menu is notonterestng at all.
Nobody, no guests were there and there is Lack of maintenance.

No ot the place to be.
