“Unsafe beds!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

For an otherwise nice hostel, I had a near death experience on the bunks. My roommates told me to be careful because TWO OTHERS in the same room had fallen off their ladders in the last two days, and so I was especially careful. Nonetheless, my latter fell off the bed as I was walking down it, and I fell onto my head from the top bunk. I was hurt fairly badly, and have bruises still weeks later. After telling the front desk, they appeared entirely unconcerned by it - they were fed up with people telling them to fix the ladders. I realized later that somebody had actually carved the word "unsafe" into the latter. Please fix this! BE CAREFUL!

We have spend 1 night at the Teddy Bear hotel during our China trip. The room was good and fairly neat. The shower was a bit unhandy as there was no curtain or anything and the breakfast was plain bad. If you have breakfast included, do not have high expectations. There are several options to choose from and all of them involve very small portions (you can only choose 1) and do also not involve toast. Good hamburgers though.

Service was average with poor English skills.

Ideal for all kinds of travellers basing themselves before & after Emei Shan. Very good location right next to bus stop. It's not as good as it thinks it is: The staff at the front desk speak poor English (Not usually a complaint but the hostel explicit ally prides itself on this) and are clearly exhausted with having to provide the same old advice about approaches to climbing the mountain. It would be a good idea for all the (Very good) information posted on walls in the dark hallway to be moved to the main dining area, perhaps left on tables? The sofa/TV room seems awkwardly detached and disconnected from the rest of the hostel. I think Y5 is too much to pay to rent a towel, and finally the bathroom lock in room 102 was broken for a week (At least) with no urgency placed in fixing it. Andy: Don't get complacent!

Stayed in this budget hotel for one night. Good location; 5 minutes walk to the Bauguo Bus Station where you can take the coaches to the summit of Emeishan (2 hours to reach the summit) or buses to Chengdu(4 hours ride). Nearby are plenty of eateries (some with very exotic food) especially at night - just wander into the side streets for more eateries. Stayed in a double bedded room which was spacious and on one of the sofa chairs was the hostel‘s mascot - big teddy bear toy. No free drinking water in this hostel; bottled drinking water is sold. There is a small cafe which serves western and local food. Staff was friendly and helpful.

I spent the weekend climbing Emeishan, and I picked the Teddy Bear Hotel because it was mentioned in Fodor's Guide book, as well as some local forums, as a good place to go.

My first impression was good - it was warm and inviting. It's on a side street, but visible from the main stretch of road. The walls are tattooed by the guests, which adds to the charm. There were free English maps of the mountain readily available, and snacks and drinks were cheap and easy (as was the food). It is a block from the main bus terminal - can't argue with the convenience!

The rooms were functional - and by functional I mean they had all the necessities. The blankets were warm, the water was hot, the towels were scratchy. I will say my room smelled unfortunately like cigarettes, despite the "Warm Tip" signing which said no smoking. The drain in the bathroom did not work, and since the bathroom was all one floor the entire thing flooded before I managed to pull out the cover. And the walls are thin, so every noise is audible. Wear earplugs and you'll be fine.

I did not interact with the staff much, but they did not have the level of English which I was led to believe would be here. I bought a water bottle and a Snickers at 5:30am before leaving to trek, and was about to leave a note with some money on the unoccupied counter, when an old man walked in, looked at my items, gave me my 1rmb change and left the building! So...I don't know what to make of that.

This is a step up from a basic hostel, and it has a nice vibe. Don't go in expecting turn down service, and keep a sense of humor (this is true of most places in China) and you'll have a good time.

Room Tip: I'd say spend a few rmb more for a private room - it's worth the added "comfort"

Emei town and Banguo are pretty grim, spoilt by Chinese package tourism and KTV joints, so there arent a great deal of options to stay prior to/after climbing Emei Shan. The Teddy Bear was pretty good, relatively easy to find and our room was good value. They also kept our luggage for free for the three days we were on the mountain. However, it is right next to the Bus station, so if you aren't getting the early bus, you will be woken by it! The service however wasn't great; having spent three days on the mountian, we asked if we could pay a small fee to use a shower in a room when we got back - no dice, too difficult. In addition, the staff weren't interested in advising us how to get back to the train station.
Overall:
Pros:
Good location
Good value
Useful maps of Emeishan routes
Cons:
Staff not super helpful
Room could have been cleaner

We stayed for 2 nights at Teddy Bear Hotel, after getting the recommendation from our Hostel in Chengdu. From what we heard at the Hostel in Chengdu it seemed to be our best choice to stay in Emeishan.
The Hotel was pretty easy to find after getting dropped of by our bus from Leshan close to the Train Station we just took Bus #8 for 2 yuan to the entrance gate. The taxi drivers that will annoy you to take their taxi will say that there is no bus but that is not the truth.
Once we got to the Hotel, we were surprised that the personal was not able to speak english very well, which is not too big of a problem, because we can speak some chinese, but it was annoying finding out information about bus-times etc.
The first night we stayed in a dorm which was under average, because for the price we expected to have towels, not have to sleep on ripped blankets and and a 5cm thick mattress.
The second night was better, because we stayed in a private bedroom for 5 yuan more per person which is a way better deal, but again the room was molding in some parts and we stayed next to the kitchen which was pretty loud at night.
Worst of all was the service though.
At first we couldnt get locker keys for the dorm room, because they lost the keys and then because all the keys were broken. Furthermore they told us that the last bus from the top of the mountain returns at 8pm, but it actually returns at 5pm which meant we had to hurry to catch the bus down again.
Overall its definetly ok to stay here, but it is an under average hostel.

Room Tip: Choose the cheapest private bedroom for 80yuan and try not to stay on the first floor.
