We found the best chips in South East Asia here! The rooms were basic but very clean and set in a beautiful garden in a quiet area by the river and close to the bat cave. I would highly recommend staying here and booking a tour with Udin (a nephew of the owner).

The place is located a bit outside town, but close enough for a short walk. It gives you the jungle feeling with the river running near by and amamazing nature surrounding the guest house. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They serve a range of different traditional dishes and what we got was delicious. The fruit plate was just amazing, fresh from the garden!

We stayed at Batu Mandi after a recommendation from friends met on a jungle trek. It was the perfect place to relax after 2 days trekking in the jungle. The rooms are large and clean. Western toilet (without the flush bit, manual flush). Bed was comfy and had a mosquito net. The porch was a big seller, with a hammock and nice chairs and table. The guesthouse is set in lovely gardens where the owner grows her fruit and veg. We ended up staying an extra 2 days over what we had planned as it was so relaxing. Make sure to try the potato curry, passion fruit juice and watermelon juice. Oh and it's very cheap!

On our way back from the Bat Cave, we sat down on the porch to have a nice coffee, tea and some snacks and, most importantly to get away from the heat a bit.
The staff was very nice, the menu quite extensive and the garden very beautiful.
Nice experience, would have loved to stay here.....

This is the right place, if you would like to leave all the troubles and stress behind you!
10 minutes walk from the bus station, over the hanging bridge, along a jungle path, where you can see monkeys hanging around in the trees.
Batu Mandi is the last Guesthouse on this side of Bukit Lawang village, settled in a wonderful garden, right in the middle of the river "Bohorok" and the jungle.
The Guesthouse is family owned and there is a very familiar atmosphere.
You will find a nice room including bathroom, a terrace with hammock and chairs, where you can drink a delicious shake with fruits from the garden.
You can also sit outside for breakfast & dinner, chill out and relax with nothing but the sound of the river and the noises from the jungle.
If you decide to do the jungletrekking, it will be an experience for lifetime!
I would recommend at least two days trekking and one night in the junglecamp, including watching Orang-Utans in their natural habitat, great views on the top of the mountains, waterfalls and pools, where you can swim or bath, fresh and delicious food, nice local people.
In Batu Mandi ask for the jungletrekking with Vyca. He is very experienced, with a passion for the jungle and the Orang-Utans, he will explain everything on the trekking, including the flora & the fauna, he considers your personal shape and he will lead you safe through the jungle beyond the trails everybody else goes.

I'd recommend Batu Mandi to everyone. I relaxed from the moment I arrived, the gardens are beautiful , the people so welcoming and the food was delicious. It's location at the bottom of the village is only 5 or 10 minutes walk from the centre should you need money change etc, but if you don't , lay back and listen to the river rush by. Great place to unwind both before and after a trek. My guide VyCa was polite and helpful in the village but on the trek, his joy for his environment and the wildlife was infectious , always smiling and considerate of your needs. He and his team made it a camping trip to remember !

Batu Mandi is tucked away on the edge of the Bukit Lawang village, right by the river and so long as you are not planning to be out late in the village each evening (narrow, unlit path to get there) is an absolutely wonderful, quiet location.

We stayed in the "family suite", which looks out right on the river with a really, really nice balcony and is highly recommended.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and the food is really, really good. And a nice touch is that every day you get a free surprise with your meal, which is some food item from the beautiful garden (or a piece of birthday cake if you are lucky enough to be there on the right day!).

Sure, the showers are cold and the toilets are Asian style squatters, but this place is worth this minor inconvenience.

And the best bit is that you can laugh at the people staying a little way up the river at the Eco Lodge who are paying several times more than you and do not have such a beautiful, quiet location.

Room Tip: Go for the "family suite" for the balcony and best river view.
