I stayed at the lodge in July 2012. Our two tour guides desi and hakim were so knowledgable. I would personally like to thank hakim for all his effort, knowledge, patience, sense of humor and help. The stay at the lodge was unbelievable comfortable in the middle of a rainforest it is truly remarkable the delicious food the staff were able to prepare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was true service excellence. Thank you to everyone at RIMBA LODGE. I am dreaming of returning... Miss you so much. Best regards, Aviva.

Room Tip: No swimming pool this is swamp land folks. No gym.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay in a Diamond Room at the Rimba Lodge. The room was fairly new and furnished as one might expect a jungle lodge to be. It was quite spacious and comfortable with good air con and mosquito netting over the bed. The shower/bathroom was rustic but fine - new fittings etc. open shower drains through the timber slats on the floor but no probs. with water eventually draining away. This is a lodge in the middle of the jungle after all - don't have unrealistic expectations. We also had a verandah with table and chairs that was very private and early morning it was a delight to sit outside (don't forget the repellent at all times) and watch the resident macaque monkeys swinging through the trees.

The staff were lovely and made us feel welcome. Meals are fairly basic but adequate and we found always served with a smile and willingness to please.

Listening to the jungle sounds especially early morning and evening while monkeys jumped onto our roof and scampered about was amazing. We travelled by klotok each day but I was always glad to return to the lodge at night preferring a comfortable bed to sleep in rather than a basic mattress thrown on the floor of a klotok. It's all a question of personal choice and you can organize to do either or even both if you so desire?

We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience of staying at Rimba and would do so again.

We stayed here for 3 nights as a centre to visit camp Leakey and the various orang utan centres.
Having travelled by boat to the hotel it transpired that some people had opted to stay onboard for accommodation, we wish we had chosen this option but did not know about it when booking.
We appreciate that it is an Eco lodge and that facilities would be basic however we were expecting a little better having stayed in other lodges elsewhere that were rated lower than this.
The room was very basic and smelled very damp, this was evident by the wet patches in corners of the room and a rush mat covering the patches on the floor. The bathroom was a wooden room with hardly any light, a faulty shower and was quite dirty and dingy.
The food was okay, hardly any choice at breakfast, if you didnt ask for things they were not offered - and the service was very disjointed. You had to order your evening meal in the afternoon so that this would be ready for the agreed serving time. This did not work as it was always 20 minutes after the set time. There are enough staff but the food is cooked in another building and is carried to the restaurant. This led to delays in getting all the dishes of the meals and we left one evening having finished what we had to find the veg being brought to the table 10 minutes after the first dish.
Breakfast was mostly buffet - eggs, toast, jam, tea coffee,fruit.....the last day we had to order breakfast the day before , another strange one as it was late again and came in bits and bobs over 20 mins and none of the guests knew what was occurring....
There is not a lot of choice of places to stay but that is not an excuse, basic yes but smelly, damp and not very clean - this is not good enough.
We did meet another Brit who stayed at the home stay a few hundred yards away called floral. Very basic but if you are not fussy it is just as good.......still should have stayed on the boat !

Room Tip: Stay on the boats - the food is better and you can spend more time relaxing rather than travelling.

We wish to comment on your report on our precious Rimba Lodge. We ask you to identify which room you stayed as your report differs geatly from other reviews undertaken at the same time. This needed so we can undertake a postmortem at our 6 nonthl;y review of the lodge performance. Your comments re our restaurant will also be followed up but against a back drop of many positive reviews also.

The option of boat options are many on the web and on the internet; also available from the Rimba Lodge itself. It seems a pity you did not take this option

I stayed at Rimba Lodge with a large group in July. I thought it was wonderful and quite comfortable considering that you are smack bang in the middle of the Borneo rainforest. The Rimba staff were very courteous and managed to give great service.

Considering the location and the limited access to groceries, I thought the meals were perfectly fine. I loved our boat crew who were very courteous and professional and our guide Hykim was just wonderful. There was so much to eat on board and they were very attentive to serving endless tea and cold drinks.

The experience observing the orangutans can not be put eloquently into words. Life changing... perhaps? It was a trip of a life time and I for one was happy to have a hot shower at night and not to sleep on the river boat. Thank you to everyone at Rimba.

We chose to stay at the Rimba Lodge and were we happy.
Rooms: The rooms were quite good but basic. Everything is there but do not expect luxury. The first room we got was a little smelly so we asked to be changed to on further back and were much happier. In addition upgrade to a room with an airconditioner, it is essential. Use the .mosquito nets and the plug in bug repellent, they did keep the mosquitos away,
Service: Extremely good. The staff are always helpful, generally all of them speak english and aim to keep you happy. We give the service very high points.
Food: the food was OK. We ordered from the menu everyday as part of the all inclusive rate, the food came out hot and freshly cooked. They catered to my wife who was vegetarian quite well. There was lots of selection to choose from. Our guide also was able to help to get them to cook us some local dishes that were not on the menu which was a treat.
Ambiance: The hotel has a good ambiance. Keep in mind that it is in the middle of the forest with very limited access. We thought that they did well in making our stay good.

The only disappointment was that the Lodge is privately owned and they do not contribute to protect or manage the park or Camp Leakey. This was quite disappointing to us at a personal level.

Overall a great place to stay while visiting Camp Leakey.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a room with an airconditioner.

The last paragraph re "the private ownership of the lodge" needs clarification. This lodge is one of five on the edge of parks, owned or managed by ECOLODGESINDONESIA, the only company in Indonesia which specialises in Conservation and which brings tourists to the fine National Parks in the country. The writer indicates disapointment in the lack of conservation credentials of the shareholders. The following is relevant assuming that you accept that tourists themselves are conservation tools bringing in local jobs.
(1) we only employ persons who live on the edge of parks using the East African model where local people who benefit through tourism protect their environment
(2) our shareholders are deeply involved in conservation. For example Professor Birute Galdikas, a major shareholder has developed Camp Leakey over 40 years; also another Dr Claire Oelrichs, another key shareholder, has developed the successful NGO "Save Indonesias Endangered species"
(3) The company has its own Conservation Fund (each person booking with us pays US$ 10 into this Fund in their booking fee) which is used strategically to assist national park employees (paying bonuses), guide training, development of new tours and others
(4) over 80% of our profits in dividends are returned to Conservation either developing new facilities bringing tourists to new parks or developing current facilities.
Thus it would be appreciated if persons writing reports could check their facts prior to making sweeping generalisations about owners of the places they are staying.

We chose to stay at the lodge rather than sleeping on the klotek (boat) as many people do and were very glad that we made that choice. Our group of 5 appreciated showers at the end of the day and air conditioning at night. The beds were comfortable and mosquito netting was in good condition. The food was plentiful and offered variety . Breakfast wasn't a highlight as they tried to make it a western experience but it was nice being able to order rather than have a buffet. They arranged for a guide and a klotek for our daily excursions. The meal on the klotek was great and our guide was quite eager to customize the experience in any manner that we wanted.. The accomodations are probably a 2 star by US standards but given where they are located, we were quite pleased. They did turn on electricity only from 5 pm - 10 am..

Room Tip: The room was large enough to accomodate an extra bed! Do get one with air conditioning unless you n...

I went to Rimba lodge for 2 nights from May 28th. We were given a lovely room that had air con and a hot shower and mosquito net. This was a lovely place to stay after the boat journeys and seeing the amazing Orangutans.
My only real caveats about this place are the lack of choice with drinks and food (we had our meals on the Klotok so were not too bothered by this) and the lack of phone signal . There is certainly no signal and no WIFI there and as I have an elderly father who I constantly have to phone - this was a problem. The only signal in the lodge is in the office when your phone is held next to what seemed like a satellite phone. I appreciate that people go there to be in a remote place, but as many sites advertise this place as having wifi, this should be corrected.
