“Our Shigira Experience”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

My wife and I stayed here last year during for the triathlon for 5 nights. We have been to many places, and found this resort to be the only one to completely let your worries go. The whole trip was fantastic due to Shigira. The service from the airport, to staff in the lobby, the ideal room, and the L'Occitane in the bathroom. The atmosphere is very relaxing throughout the entire place. When we wanted to take things up a notch after a long race, they have ATVs ready to rent. The main high points for us was the constant help, landscaping, the pools and rivers, and the general overall atmosphere. The only down side was the food. The breakfast was great, don't get me wrong, but for the place you pay for a stay, I expect something to set this place apart from say an ANA hotel. The meals we had for dinner were also good, but nothing to write home about.

If in your mind your hotel makes or breaks your trip, do not pass on Shigira. Well worth it!

This is a very good luxury all-suite hotel at the south shore of Miyakojima, a bit on the mountain but very close to the beach.
Service is professional.
Rooms face the ocean, they are clean, no strange smell, and beds are comfortable. Breakfast has lots of selection though is not that special.
If prices for lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurants seem pricy – you can easily find cheaper places down near Hotel Breeze Bay Marina.
The beach of the hotel is Shigira beach, a few minute drive (not walking distance) downhill. The hotel has a shuttle every 20 minutes.
The beach is lovely as it is a natural bay, protecting us from the wavy sea. You can swim (at high tide) and snorkel (at low tide). The beach house will give you whatever you need.

We stayed at the Shigira from Nov 7 to 9 for a long 2 nights weekend getaway from crowded and cold Tokyo.
The resort , which doesn't look anything like most of the ugly concrete-box type Japanese beach hotels, in style and architecture is fashioned after other SE Asian resorts and boasts spectacular ocean views and sunrises.
The rooms (we stayed in a regular standard room) are very spacious even for Japanese standards and have all the amenities needed for a comfortable/luxurious stay: bath/shower-room with large window allowing for great views and equipped with a full line of 'L'Occitane' toiletries (no need to bring anything at all), large sunk-in day-bed you can also sleep on at night, comfortable lounge chairs above the daybed facing the ocean/coastline, a large balcony, great bed-room, mini-sauna, etc. The rooms are very clean and house-keeping and overall customer service is excellent.
For beakfast, the Shigira offers an ample buffet that includes both western and local foods. There is an Asian-styled foodcourt nearby (3 minutes by car) that provides ample seating and a good choice of Okinawan, Taiwanese, and SE Asian dishes in a nice open-air and casual ambiente - all for reasonable prices which is rare for Japan. No need to have dinner at the hotel.
The resort has its own golf-course right in front of the door and a beach-house that provides all kinds of water activities gear. There even is a helicopter landing sight next to the beach-house if you're in the mood for a 10minute trip along the spectacular coastline (which we did and it was fantastic) you should definitely do this.

In general, about Miyakojima:
- make sure you go outside of Typhoon season, since when it pours there isn't really anything to do outside
- climate: despite being the beginning of November we still enjoyed day-time temperatures of about 30 Celsius (very tropical, hot, and sunny) and night-time temperatures of about 25degrees.
- the island is very small, but you need a rental to get-around (virtually no cabs)
- there are some beautiful, unspoiled, white powder-like sand beaches with lush vegetation and few if any people during off-season. The water is very tropical warm and beautiful clean and the whole island atmosphere, coastline, landscape reminds you of a mix of Hawaii and SE Asia.
- local food is excellent if you enjoy Japanese cuisine and you should make the effort to check out some of the local restaurants

Miyakojima is an excellent place for a quick weekend getaway and we can only recommend the island and the Shigira.
