“Beautiful retreat”
Reviewed 5 March 2013

Very rarely is it a misstep choosing to stay at a R&C properly, and the Coquillade was no exception.

Located in the beautiful Luberon countryside, the property is a lovely converted village. The rooms are actually old village structures, remodeled with all modern conveniences, and of course at the standard that you'd come to expect from Relais & Chateaux.

Interestingly, upon arrival, you are carted (literally) off via golf cart for a mini tour of the beautiful grounds. The grounds are well manicured and breathtaking.

There is lots to do in this region - from visiting charming nearby towns of Lacoste, Menerbes, etc, as well as visiting lovely markets (Apt, Lourmarin), to driving a bit further out for the L'Occitane factory tour (if you are a fan of their products, this is a must visit).

We dined in the hotel's main restaurant, and were pleased with the level of cooking.

Bottom line: If you've stayed at R+C hotels before, then you know what to expect -- great service, immaculate rooms, gorgeous grounds, fantastic food.

Beautiful setting, wonderfully comfortable, impeccably clean, well-cared for rooms and outstanding dining in both restaurants. The area is very convenient to great sights, fun wine-tasting and fantastic bicycling too. We wished we'd had more than three nights. We will be back.

La Coquillade is in a league of its own. We have eaten here many many times over the past two summers. The restaurant Gastro is a wonderful experience - delicious food, impeccable service and amazing views; we have celebrated numerous birthdays and other occasions here and have never been disappointed. We also love the bistro dans les vignes for sunday lunches and evenings out with friends; it's a much more relaxed affair - the food is simpler, and main courses are cooked on the outside grill - but as with the gastronomique restaurant the food is delicious, the service friendly and efficient and the views beautiful. We have also stayed overnight (with two children); the junior suite was beautifully appointed, with a separate sitting area and two adjoining sleeping areas (one with two single beds under the eaves for the children); the service was excellent. In our opinion no other 5 star establishment in the Luberon can rival La Coquillade.

This hotel has a glorious setting on a hill in the middle of lavender fields and olive groves - great for walks. The gardens are beautiful and the service is good. We had a junior suite that was actually its own separate little building (I'm guessing we were allocated this room as we were travelling with a baby and a dog).

The room was beautifully furnished and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious; however, taking a shower meant very wet floors. A relatively minor problem.

The main issue was the complete lack of food options for vegetarians. A 5-star hotel that caters to an international clientele really should be able to provide at least simple vegetarian food, such as meat-free pasta, salads and so on. We managed to convince the chef to make us a green salad (literally just a few salad leaves) and that was it. Not wanting to starve, we ended up going to Apt to get take-away meals. We would have preferred to stay on the hotel premises for meals, especially with a newborn in tow, and the hotel lost out on that business from us.

Overall, this hotel is a fantastic place for relaxation. We would gladly visit again, but only if there was something for us to eat.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for having taken the time to give us your remarks after your stay with us

We are very happy to read that you enjoyed both the location of our Hotel, situated in the middle of the Luberon, and your room.
However, we were sorry to discover that you weren’t satisfied by our cuisine.
In our restaurants the menu in itself includes meat or fish ( our menu changes every day), but we can offer vegetarian food to our guests on request (and you can find vegetarian food on our room service menu).

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to La Coquillade next year for our reopening in May 2013, and to our new restaurant, le Bistrot dans les Vignes.

Best Regards

We are not foodies at all and stayed here just to be in a fabulous hotel in the middle of the Luberon. I researched the options heavily and La Coquillade did not disappoint. Great location for visiting Bonnieux, Menerbes, Gordes, Apt, and the whole Luberon area. The hotel is exquisite. Each room feels like a private mini-mas of one's own with private entrance and seating area. We had a junior suite overlooking the pool area which was fabulous. The grounds are phenomenal. We were there during October so a bit off-season and it was chilly but so romantic and cozy. I'd love to go back during the summer but also wouldn't hesitate to visit again in the fall. The WiFi was GREAT which is a big deal for us, and we had a great special rate we found on their website as well. Five stars!! There are other hotels that are closer to the small towns: admittedly you must drive to everything from La Coquillade but staying here you have the sense that you are staying at a really chic private chateau in Provence (if that home was run by the Four Seasons!) so if that is interesting to you I highly recommend this property!!

The hotel is almost perfect - great service, friendly staff, delightful rooms most with terrace.
Ours overlooked the western hills and vineyards. Wonderful gardens and grounds, all beautifully maintained. Perfect peace.
Rooms are very well appointed; beds and bedlinens are top class. Wi Fi works well.
Dining room is a bit sombre and food, while having the trappings of Michelin star ( amuse bouche, pre-dessert etc.) just did not have the quality or finesse that we have come to expect.
Our neighbours in the restaurant obviously felt the same and complained about the dishes. We did not complain but made a note to return only on the nights when the Bistro is open for a simpler and less elaborate dinner.

Room Tip: ask for the western facing terrace

My husband and I had an amazing experience at La Coquillade. The property is beautiful, the service is top notch, and the food is exquisite. I am a vegan (I don’t eat dairy, eggs, or meat) and the chef prepared for me a gourmet multi-course plant based meal. It was the best food I had on the entire trip. My husband and I have stayed in many five star hotels including thee Relais & Chateaux properties in the south of France (La Coquillade, Villa Gallici, and Chateau de la Chevre d'Or). We had a pleasant experience at all of these hotels, but La Coquillade was by far the best hotel we stayed at in Provence. My only piece of constructive criticism for this hotel is that they should heat there pool. However, everything else was so perfect that this minor flaw should not deter anyone from staying at this wonderful Relais & Chateaux.
