I am still here in the hotel as I write this review. Our car was broken into today at Bonnieux and all our belongings stolen, save for important documents. We literally only have the shirts on our backs left. The staff at La Coquillade has been exceptionally kind and helpful in negotiating with the rental car company and figuring out which police station we should go to. Thank you to Jasmine, Sam and Julie, and others for making a bad situation a little better.

The property is a 5-star property and the setting is beautiful. They lack the amenities but it appears they're building them. However the service pales in comparison to 5-star service at a Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons or a true 5-star boutique hotel.

A couple of issues:
-Lack of staff - staff not available for help --- at the pool side there are no waiters or staff whatsoever, beautiful pool but pretty annoying to have ZERO service there (i went multiple times)

-I purchased a Gastronomic Package which included bfast and a dinner at the Gourmet restaurant. When I checked in I was told the hotel doesn't do packages -- and after coming back later with a my printout was told oh yes I had booked a package (which wasn't a discount btw -- just included bfast and one dinner and a bottle of wine from their winery which is rather subpar imo). The included Gourmet Dinner was said to include beverages but truly the hotel cheaped out in giving the most basic dinner/drinks as part of the meal ..... far from a "Gastronomic Experience.

-Breakfast Service was incredibly rude -- the hostess simply chatted on the phone for 20 mins before seating us one day. The next day, I had to grab the tablecloth and lay my own table while she stood and watched.

-In terms of personal touches or anything for a couple celebrating an anniversary there were absolutely none -- having stayed at true 5-stars in the past I found this very dissapointing

-Will say dinner at the Bistro was fairly good.

Thank you for your review and for your compliments about our property and our “Bistrot”. We are pleased to know that you were satisfied on these points. Regarding the service in our hotel, we have taken into account some of your remarks. They are useful to improve ourselves and offer the best service. But even if our personnel is heartedly involved in the customer service, in our proper “style” though (and this is also the charm of the Relais & Châteaux properties), we have the feeling not to be the category of hotel you are looking for (and this can be noticed also as reading your other posts on Tripadvisor). Obviously a chain hotel with standard (but also high level) services or a palace might suit you better. We hope that you enjoyed your stay in France though. Kind regards.

PROMISE UNFULFILLED- bugs in the bed!
We stayed here, briefly, on June 24.

When we reserved a junior suite, months ahead of time, this hotel seemed to present an idyllic picture. Our arrival process was smooth and we were soon being transported by cart through vineyards to our reserved junior suite. Once inside however, it was a poor resemblance to what was pictured on the web site. The entire color scheme was a depressing dark taupe, with a small entry sitting area continuing and open into a bedroom only large enough for the bed. We requested another room, and they moved us to "the last room we have."

The second room was larger, better designed, brighter, and seemed very nice. Once settling into the room however our conclusions changed. It seems that in these rooms form trumps functionality. For instance, the shower. It is a somewhat confined space with no door or curtain, so that water splashes everywhere, including the floor and walls outside the shower. Though there was an overhead rain showerhead, it was not usable. We called the desk for help in this regard and they could not figure out how to switch this on either. The double vanity sinks follow the same pattern. They are rectangular and somewhat small, with a large faucet protruding into the center. There is also no stopper in the sink, making it impossible to run a sink of water. The protruding faucet also makes it virtually impossible to wash one's face. The walls of the Vanity are merely painted, not stone or tile surface. The counter is very narrow (sinks mounted sideways) so that water splashes everywhere when the faucet is utilized. The sinks are virtually Unusable.

When we then tried to run a tub of water, in the overly large tub taking up a lot of room in the bath, the drain control knob fell off. We informed personnel about this but as of the next morning it had merely just been put back in place and fell off again.

The room was about 78 degrees F, and staff informed us that there is "always trouble" at this time of year regulating the air conditioning, especially in west-facing rooms. This was only mid June however. Imagine what this is like in July and August!

THE WORST WAS YET TO COME. We scooped up and discarded a roach from the middle of the sitting room floor. The hotel is in the middle of vineyards and in the country so we didn't pay much attention to it. When my wife lay down for a minute on the bed, she discovered a small black bug (like a large tick) under her pillow. Again we said to ourselves, "we are in the country after all," and went to dinner.

Upon returning a few hours later, the room was still quite warm, and we decided to check the bed again. When we pulled back the coverlet and pillows we found three similar black bugs actively crawling along the sheets. At that point I pulled the bed and the headboard out and there were more of the same behind and underneath the headboard. At that point, our skin was crawling, and it was 10:30 PM.

The front desk manager was sympathetic and offered to return us to the initial room, with a plan to move us to yet another room the next afternoon, and to not charge for our first night. She did everything correctly. Along with all of this goes the fact that we had already fully unpacked. Of course we did close up all our suitcases when we left to sleep in the other room. We slept poorly.

The next morning we remained so grossed out by the reality of insects in and around the bedroom that we decided to leave the hotel. The vast majority of the hotel personnel who we encountered during our chaotic visit were very efficient and very nice. One exception was the general manager who remained in her office, visible to us, and did not deign to come out, in spite of being informed of the problem. As she walked back-and-forth, she seemed to studiously avoid interacting directly with us.

So there you have it: failure of design and failure of maintenance. I urge you to avoid this hotel.

Room Tip: avoid this place!

Thank you for your compliment about our service and our nice and professional staff. We also would like to give an informative answer to your post which seems somehow unfair to us. First of all, regarding the decoration and equipment of the room, it is clear that they are not of your taste, it is regrettable but we can hardly please everyone’s taste. Regarding the insects, our experienced Head Technician has concluded after control that the room was not infected by bugs nor ticks. Although we witnessed the presence of insects, your room was sold before and after your stay and no one complained about anything like this. As you mention, we have made the maximum to face your unsatisfaction and we feel very sorry to read that it was obviously not sufficient. We also would like to let you know that our General Manager was personally concerned and ordered not to charge your stay, which was done.
We hope that the rest of your vacation in Provence went well.
Best regards,

Loved every bit of our stay at La Coquillade from the moment we arrived at their doorstep until we left. Excellent services by the hotel staff at the reception, the butler, the restaurant staff. The buffet breakfast was the most pleasant we had during our 10-day stay in France. The dinner at the bistrot was also excellent although it is quite pricey, but it is a Relais & Chateaux hotel. The room is magnificent, the pools are huge, the entire place was so peaceful we felt like we were in paradise. Really glad they have a Nespresso machine in the room. Will definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

We stayed at La Coquillade a year ago, and we are planning to return for the third time when I realized I had never posted a review. To us, Provence is lavender and La Coquillade, our home in Provence. Drive up to the wrought-iron gate, through a winding lavender-lined driveway, up to the reception area, where you are met by the doorman, welcomed and registered. Valet parking and golf carts will take you and your bags to your beautiful suite overlooking the Luberon mountains and Mont Ventoux, where a complimentary bottle of house wine sits chilled and waiting. Or you can explore the lovely grounds and sit in the lounge to gaze at the magnificent Luberon and Mont Ventoux. Elegant, opulent, yet Provencal-rustic at the same time. Cannot say enough about the hotel. And Mr Wunderli and his lovely wife Carmen are the most hospitable welcoming hosts, who always stop to mingle over the fabulous Michelin-star dinners! Truly, the only thing missing is music!

Room Tip: the suites are wonderful - ask for one with a view of the mountains

La Coquillade is a unique luxury estate nestling in the heart of the Luberon region of Provence Close to Rousillion, Gordes and some of the lesser known but equally beautiful perched villages of this lovely part of France. The estate itself has just 28 rooms and suites situated in secluded 'cottages' set in their own gardens around the central buildings housing the Michelin-starred fine dining room and more affordable main restaurant. There are two heated, large swimming pools surrounded by relaxing and private day beds. This is all set within the estate's own extensive vineyards. The whole is absolutely enchanting. Service and amenities are what you would expect from a top class five star establishment as are the prices! However the setting, attention to detail and overall excellence make a stay at La Coquillade good value for money. We will definitely be back.

As previous reviewers have said, La Coquillade is a resort - a collection of attractive renovated houses in a most beautiful setting with stunning views.
At present, building work is in progress but when telephoning to make our booking we found that the receptionist was totally honest about the effect that that might have on our stay and special rates are being offered.
Service was first class - our suite was superb - dinner in Le Gourmet restaurant was amazing.
A stunning stay - we were very reluctant to leave and will return soon.

Thanks a lot for your comment. La Coquillade becomes in 2015 Coquillade*****Village, with additional rooms and suites in a second "hamlet" and a very nice 1000m² luxury Spa. This is still under construction (take benefit of the special 30% discount in 2014!). Opening April 1st 2015! We hope to welcome you again and make you discover the "new" Coquillade! A new beautiful experience to live :-).
